Late September and October have served up some great flying conditions. It’s amazing how quickly the various airfields seem to be drying out despite the heat not yet arriving.

Congratulations to Barry Smith who has achieved his Silver Wings. Time and persistence has finally paid off.

The club recently participated with a display at the Aldinga Air Show. Visitors to the aerodrome exceeded all expectations despite the threatening weather that eventually hit around 2pm. There were plenty of aircraft on display that patrons could walk around, view and talk with the owners/pilots. Aldinga’s own Jesse Jury and “veteran’ Chris Sperou provided spectacular aerobatic displays. Thanks to Troy for overseeing our participation and Peter, Greg and Paul who set up the display and provided aircraft and engines. A very special thanks to John Trussler who manned the site all day and spoke to a lot of interested people. Let’s hope we see some new interest in our modelling activities and hopefully attendance at Military Day on 25th November.

The Aldinga Air Show now looks like becoming a Bi Annual event. The Float Flyers from

Noarlunga attended the Lake Leake event early October. The weekend served up some spectacular weather, light winds and smooth water. Some of the photos were beautiful.

Sean & Peter Readett recently competed at the F3A State Champs at Monarto on 20/21 October. Challenging windy conditions made Saturday difficult with beautiful conditions on Sunday. Michael Smith from Constellation won Advanced with Peter a close second and Sean 3rd. (but as far as Peter goes, he finally beat Sean at last by only the smallest of margins). Congratulations also to John Thiele winning Sportsman,

Peter Ukhoff winning Expert and Jeff Boyd won F3ATeam Jacobsen have been travelling the country in pursuit of Pylon Racing Glory. Their goal of course has

been to make the Australian FAI Pylon Team for the 2019 World Championships being held in Maryborough Queensland in August next year. Of course being a home held event, every Pylon flyer in the nation is keen to make the team. Pilots qualify over a 3 race meetings.

September saw the family travel to Cohuna Victoria for the 2nd qualifier. Wasn’t a great weekend from all reports in FAI but a family clean sweep, 123 finish in the 400 class was a great result (Shaun, Jarrod & Tom)

October saw a long trip to Coolum in Queensland. Tom bombed out with some early mistakes but Jarrod and Shaun were right in the mix. Whilst not winning the event Jarrod just pipped Shaun on the day but congratulations to Shaun who has made 1st reserve for the Australian Team, effectively finishing 4th across the qualifying events.

Shaun missed 3rd place by just 2 seconds across 3 race meetings which shows how close and competitive the racing is. A great result seeing the boys have to travel for all genuine national competitions and there really is no good close practice facilities for them.

Planning is well underway for our annual Military and Civil Scale Fun Fly on 25th November 2018.

We appeal to all members for assistance in planning and helping with working bees and on the day and we seek flyers from everywhere to come along with their planes and enjoy a great event. We hope we will see plenty of WW1 models that Pilots can bring

along after they have attended the SHMAC Dawn Patrol on 11th November. An effort is being made by some to try some indoor flying. Space has been booked at Seaford Recreation

Centre so we hope there will be plenty of interest. It’s a great discipline, no wind and an opportunity for “stick time” and trying some of the manoeuvres that you are not game to try on big models, most of the indoor foamies bounce.

GENERAL BUSINESS

MASA special committee meeting re: Border Model Flyers Field

Current Situation

• The MASA lease agreement requires a principal amount of $1000 plus the interest of $900

• The club business plan to purchase the property indicates a proposal of repayments of around $700 per year as repayment for them

Committee was with briefed by the executive and discussed the situation at length covering club membership numbers, growth, fun raising events and the viability of MASA utilising existing funds to purchase the land, concluding in the following motion.Moved by MASA Executive and seconded by SHMAC.That the motion of 3/10/2018 (MASA loan to Border Model Flyers Inc) be rescinded and be replaced with a motion for:

MASA to purchase the land and sublease back to BMF based on 2% of purchase price ($37,500) plus stamp duty, conveyancing and contract costs and the terms and conditions of the lease would be reviewed in five years. The motion was carried with a unanimous vote in favour. The MASA secretary was asked to establish the cost of the conveyancing process and engage a conveyancer to conduct the transactions

Skyhawks AED request. The correspondence from Skyhawks was discussed by committee. Holdfast informed the meeting that their club was successful in obtaining a Council grant to acquire their device. Committee considered that clubs approach their local councils in the first instance.

MASA/Club Banner Flags. Some time ago a MASA initiative to promote aeromodelling and clubs was via the flying of a banner at club functions. Several clubs took advantage of the shared cost initiative and obtained banners with MASA on one side and the club logo and wording on the other. A renewed interest in this initiative has been raised and with greater numbers the price becomes more attractive, hence club representatives are asked to respond back to MASA with expression of interest from their respective clubs for the initiative to progress.

Moonta Loan. The club advised that their loan has now been cleared.

Dawn Patrol Raffle. The committee was advised to return raffle tickets spread sheets back to the SHMAC secretary by the 31st October.

From: Modellbau-Ostheimer <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, 22 October 2018 5:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: VMAR Chipmunk model airplane cheaterDear Madam / Sir / model building friends in Australia,

please apologize in case my english is not 100% alright as I´m writing from Germany.

The reason for this mail is a cheater and model airplane pilot who fooled us in a very bad way, he probably lives in the Mt. Barker area.

This person ordered a model airplane from us, a yellow ARF-kit de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk from VMAR.

In case you´ll like to see a picture of the actual model, you can take a view at the two pictures on our website under the following link:

https://www.modellbau-ostheimer.de/rc-modellbau/ferngesteuerte-flugzeuge/motorflugzeug-verbrenner/2145/vmar-canadian-chipmunk.40.53-chipyel

We did sent out the Chipmunk to this unknown guy after he contacted me through several emails asking many friendly questions about this model plane and finally send us a Paypal-payment for the kit including shipping to the following address (the name also occured in his email- and the Paypal-acounts):

Daniel Henriques de la Fuente, 11 Young Ct, 5251 Mt. Barker

I have to admit that this name and the address might have only be used for the criminal intentions of the person who ordered the Chipmunk and it could be, that the cheater has a complete other name or lives elsewere in the area around this address.

Due the way of the Paypal payment for our invoice this guy did, it was not covered by any protection and undoubtely it was my fault to accept this payment...what I learned afterwards after while talking to Paypal. He took the money back after receiving the kit end of July / early August - Paypal says only, that it was a bank fraud and nothing can be done, the german police already is trying to search, but admitted that due the distance to Australia, chances are not the best to get something back.

So if you wonder now why I´m writing this whole story: It´s not just about the money and the nice Chipmunk we lost to this liar...sometimes things can only be learned the hard way and this was the price I had to pay this time, I think - but what really makes me angry is the hard-boiled spitefulness in which this guy took the plane / money with his sheer endless emails to my dad´s shop. My father is nearly 80 years old now, runs this shop since 1954 and is always a helpful person to model airplane friends around the world...but we have never served such a sly person.

The VMAR Chipunk has run out of production about 10 to 15 years ago and this was also our last kit in stock, so chances could be good, that our model occurs somewhere in the next time or season. In case you know anybody or have a “friend” on the airfields round Mt. Barker showing off a brand new yellow VMAR Chipmunk, feel free to ask him if he “purchased” this kit from Modellbau-Ostheimer in Germany or knows us in association with the plane.

In case you´re talking to our “customer”, it would be very satisfying if he´s blushing and thinks a bit on how to reconcile this whole story with his own conscience - and if that can cause to spoil this bloody guy´s fun with the stolen Chipmunk, it would be more worth than any money we could get back.

Greetings from Schöllkrippen/Germany to Australia and happy modeling!

Thomas Ostheimer
