PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Dr Darren Egberts

NEWSLETTER 21 May 2020

This month marks the fifth anniversary of the release of Pope Francis’ environmental encyclical, ‘Laudato Si : On the care for our common home’.

To mark the anniversary, Francis invites the world's 1.2 billion Catholics to take part in ‘Laudato Si' Week, saying, "I renew my urgent call to respond to the ecological crisis. The cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor cannot continue."

The theme for the week is ‘everything is connected’, a central message in the encyclical made all the clearer as the current pandemic has raised dramatic consequences for all aspects of life around the world.

So we pray for the earth and for the poor.

Annie O’Shannessy, Director of Faith and Mission

There is plenty of anticipation, mixed equally with some anxiety, as our senior students are due to return to onsite learning and teaching next Tuesday 26 May. My newsletter article continues the practice of outlining some of the important details regarding this transition back to onsite learning.

Although the Victorian Government and its health advisors have declared schools safe for students and staff, Sacred Heart College will be asking all students to embrace social responsibility as the overarching value for 2020. It reflects the need for each of us to consider carefully how our actions, behaviours and attitudes contribute to the social, health and wellbeing outcomes of the school and broader community. Practices such as appropriate social distancing, good personal hygiene as well as regular and rigorous hand washing reinforce this.

Important Dates

Interim Arrangements (Tuesday 26 May – Friday 5 June)

Friday 22 May School Closure Day No student classes

Monday 25 May

Professional Learning Day – preparation for return to onsite learning

No student classes

Tuesday 26 May Year 11 & 12 onsite classes commence

Year 7 – 10 classes continue remotely but some Year 10 students required to attend onsite classes (see below)

Tuesday 9 June All students return to onsite classes

Friday 12 June Report Writing Day No student classes

As the return to onsite learning is a two-stage process, some special arrangements have had to be put in place:

Year 9 & 10 students enrolled in VCE or VET units are required to attend onsite classes alongside all Year 11 & 12 students from Tuesday 26 May. Students needing to stay at school for the full day will be supervised and able to continue with their remote Year 10 classes. Alternatively, they may be collected by parents at recess or lunchtime to complete their remote schooling at home.

Year 10 students will not be permitted to leave school after their VCE/VET classes unless they are collected by parents.

A small number of Sacred Heart College teachers will continue to teach remotely as they are regarded as being particularly vulnerable to a Covid-19 infection according to the Victorian Government’s guidelines.

Onsite supervision will continue to be offered for Year 7 – 10 students whose parents are unable to provide an adequate learning environment. Please contact Mrs Jan Bower ([email protected]) to arrange this. Please note that students will now be required to wear winter uniform.

The College’s Instrumental Music Program will transition to full face-to-face teaching with the return of students to onsite learning. Full details on this are available through your child’s music teacher or Mr Terry Carrick ([email protected]).

The College’s Head of Senior School and the Year 10 – 12 Year Level Leaders will be writing to all senior school parents with details on what students can expect on their return.

Given that schools are not required to have students socially distant, most classrooms and learning programs will occur as normal following the return to onsite learning. However, many of the changes identified last week will be ready for next Tuesday: Hygiene – Students and staff will have access to hand sanitiser in every learning space as well as many communal areas. All members of the SHC community will be encouraged to regularly sanitise their hands during the day.

Cleaning Schedules – The Victorian Government has introduced a new set of cleaning guidelines for schools with significant increases to the frequency and scope of cleaning practices. In addition to a more rigorous end-of-day cleaning schedule for all areas within the College, we will also be introducing ‘during-the-day’ cleaning with cleaning contractors disinfecting high traffic and touch areas in staff and student areas.

The College’s cleaning contractors are interested in employing more staff to support the increased Covid-19 requirements, details on this can be found later in this newsletter.

Atrium and Canteen Sales – In light of social distancing guidelines, the College canteen is moving to contactless food sales with food/drink available for purchase only through FlexiSchools orders. Details on FlexiSchools are included in this newsletter. First Aid Arrangements – As schools are requesting that anyone who displays flu-like symptoms (of any degree) is isolated at home, we expect greater numbers of students and staff to be admitted to our First Aid area. With this in mind and the need to ensure appropriate isolation protocols, the College’s First Aid area has been moved to the Side Chapel and staffing has been increased. Any student reporting flu-like symptoms will need to be collected by parents as soon as possible. Visitors to the College – Under the current social isolation rules, only essential visitors are permitted on the Sacred Heart College site from next Tuesday, therefore all parents, carers and members of the broader College community are asked to avoid visiting College Reception wherever possible. Please email the College or call on 54211200 with all enquiries. We are looking at providing online alternatives to all of the College’s ‘in-person’ transactions. Bus Arrangements – Aside from some minor changes to the front of buses to allow social distancing for bus drivers, there are no changes in bus arrangements for any Victorian school students.

Last Tuesday, three College student leaders joined me to welcome twelve prospective Sacred Heart College families through the first Enrolment Conversation. This Zoom Conversation gave our student leaders the opportunity to talk about what makes life at Sacred Heart special for them and also to describe what transition to secondary schooling meant for them. The Conversation was a great success with a warm atmosphere throughout albeit electronically. I encourage any prospective student enrolments to consider booking in for one of the Enrolment Conversations occurring this term – booking available through the College website (www.shckyneton.catholic.edu.au). Enrolment packages and application forms are available from the College Reception (54211200). Yours in Mercy,

Dr Darren Egberts Principal

As we approach the return to school for Victorian students, I have been asked a few things by parents that I feel might be a good idea to clarify.

UNIFORM As per a normal school year, students are in full winter uniform for Terms Two and Three. Blazers are to be worn to and from school, unless it is raining, whereby the blue jacket can be worn as the outer garment. Boys are encouraged to wear long pants. Girls are also encouraged to wear tights. This is sensible and simple. These simplifications were to be part of a bigger discussion with parents for this winter, but the current circumstances have meant that this will be postponed. If new items need to be purchased however, then transition into long pants and tights. Pants are also available for the girls if they do not want to wear the skirt and tights option. To download the Uniform Brochure Click Here.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY When the students return, we know that there will be a mixture of excitement and apprehension. There will be some things that will be different, not in terms of buildings, but in terms of how we interact with each other. We have developed a set of social responsibilities as guidelines for everyone, as we believe that even though social distancing will not be possible at school, it is important that students understand the bigger picture of how we must all act, both inside and outside of the school setting. I have included these for you, and it would be great if you were able to discuss these at home with your young person or people before the students return.

What is my SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY?

Remembering that I am not alone – I am part of the bigger, broader community

Thinking of the people around me – I might be OK, but they may not

Washing and tidying, cleaning and sanitising

Not getting too close or touching anyone else, or sharing my belongings

Being patient and staying calm even if I have to wait

Looking out for older people

Coughing and sneezing into my elbow

Staying home if I am not well

CAFETERIA The Cafeteria in the Atrium will be one area where things will be a little different. There will no longer be over-the-counter service. This will apply for recess and lunchtime. All food will need to be pre-ordered via a Flexi-schools account. Lunches will be ordered in the current manner, and we will trial orders for recess in the two weeks that the seniors are coming back. If this is manageable, it will continue. If you haven’t already set up an account with Flexischools, and your student will want cafeteria food, follow the instructions to do so.

Just as we settle into remote learning, we are preparing to head back to school! We are missing seeing everyone in the library and are really keen to get back. As it presently stands, the library will be open at recess and lunch times when we return but closed to classes. This will help minimise movement throughout the school.

Semester Two Subject Changes Semester Two subject/elective changes for Years 9, 10 and 11 to open on Thursday 28 May and will close on Thursday 18 June. Semester Two commences on Monday 13 July. Student timetables will be uploaded to SIMON by the start of Term 3, Monday 13 July. To make a change, students will need to complete a Change of Unit/Subject Form (green - Year 10, pink - Year 11) obtained from outside Student Reception. Year 10 students wanting to obtain a form prior to their return on the 9 June please email Mr Matthews. Year 9 students need to obtain a form by emailing Mrs Wattie, Head of Junior School.

Senior School Students Please note in order to enable the timetable and class numbers to be confirmed, and to meet the required VCE class attendance hours, no changes will be made after these dates. We ask that parents support us in this request. Forms will need to be signed by a parent/guardian, and Current Subject Teacher and a reason for the change given. Interviews will be held during lunchtime with Mr Matthews in his office (O208), to determine if the change is possible based on the subject/unit blocking. Students are required to book a lunchtime interview on the booking sheet located outside O208 (after June 9 for Year 10 students). If this change has a significant impact on future career plans, then it is essential that students organise a Career appointment prior to their interview to discuss options. This information and process is available to all students via Daily Messages.

Recently our Food Technology topics suited creating something nice for mum on Mother’s Day. Year 7 and 8 Food Technology created scones. We learned about how to make scones, including understanding the rubbing in method and different ingredient variations such as the inclusion of lemonade, cream or buttermilk. Also, that extra flavours, such as sultanas, choc chips or cheese and herbs can be added.

Year 9s are creating a Food Isolation Portfolio over eight weeks with a different theme each week, last week’s theme was afternoon teas. This is based on personal interests and skill level and mostly using the ingredients they have at home. They had an opportunity to discuss and investigate possible recipes from both sweet and savoury options, and some chose to make it for their mum on the Sunday. Here are some afternoon tea recipes they came up with. The Year 9s also had an opportunity to be involved in an afternoon tea practical Zoom, where we made Savoury Scrolls. Many made Vegemite and cheese, while others made variations based on what they had at home. It was lots of fun cooking together in our own homes.

Year 10 Automotive Studies - Andrew Scarlett

As with all ‘remote’ subjects, Automotive Studies at Year 10 has posed many challenges for the students. Whilst working through theory each week, I asked the students to complete some basic checks on the family car, to keep their interest levels up and get them outside in the sunshine. Some of the items that the students had to tick off and report on were:

Engine Oil

Tyre Pressures

Water level

Identification Plates

Any special features their car might have Here is Alex Carlton-Doney checking the items on his parent’s car.

These are activities that the Year 7 students have been doing remotely during their practical classes. I believe that some of the parents have also been exercising with the students, which was great to hear.

Career Guidance During Remote Learning, the Careers Department, consisting of three qualified Career Practitioners, has been continuing their guidance and pathway interviews with Year 12 students through Google Meet and through our Career Tools Website CareerTools. This way of communicating has been really well received by the students. The sessions involve conversations to support students to unpack their interests, talents, strengths and motivations. This process also includes helping students to identify their skills, and to link that information to pathways that they may not have discovered yet. Once potential pathways have been identified, the exploration begins, researching the many opportunities for their transition to other study options or the world of work. Navigating through the websites whilst google meeting has been very successful, and has allowed for the students themselves to become the drivers. We are looking forward to continuing our support both virtually and face-to-face when we return next week. More careers and pathway information to follow in future articles.

Computer Ergonomics

The computer is a vital tool in many different jobs and activities, for adults and children. But long periods of using a computer can increase your chance of developing an injury. Inappropriate computer use can cause muscle and joint pain, overuse injuries of the shoulder, arm, wrist or hand, and eyestrain. Children can experience particular physical and psychological problems if they are spending too much time in front of a screen. You can reduce or avoid these risks with

Arts in Lockdown

There’s no doubt that these are uncertain times. It is easy to feel as though the world has been flipped upside down, that there is no escape from the ever-changing force that is COVID-19. It is not uncommon to feel lost and unsure, but that is why it is more important than ever to take time to relax. And what better way than to get creative!

Art is suggested to help improve mental health, with engagement of the senses being able to enhance mood. It also helps diffuse and process stress and anxiety through focusing the mind. These benefits are not dependent on skill, encouraging everyone to have a go at relaxation through art. Even if you do not have access to a paintbrush or pencil, there are plenty of resources online, including colouring or drawing apps such as ‘Sketches’ (a personal favourite!). Art is such an accessible activity, even in lockdown, and I highly recommend taking some time out to look after yourself and get creative!

I’d like to mention the wonderful work of students and teachers in the Art Department, and all Departments, who have done a magnificent job in adapting to, and persevering through remote schooling! In these challenging times, everyone has come together to help one another and should be congratulated for their efforts. Here is some of the great work that has been happening in online classes:

Amber Jepsen Senior Arts Captain

ARTWORK OF THE WEEK – 21 May 2020

Anastacia Kelleher, Year 10, ‘Flower of Hope’ This is a canvas painting on the topic of mental health and isolation. I made this painting because I think it’s a good reflection of what I am feeling, or other people in isolation are feeling. My idea was to have a blanket hanging from the wall with a pattern of the sky, resembling how someone might feel trapped inside, just wishing they were outside experiencing things. With regards to the flower, I wanted it to mean some form of not being lonely because you have to take care of plants. It also adds a slight bit of happiness and colour to a room that you feel trapped in.

Dean Allan, Year 10 , ‘Kangaroos in the Bushfire’

This lino cut shows two kangaroos standing atop a hill, watching their habitat as it is burned down to ashes, and the fire rages towards them. The print shows the two kangaroos looking at the fire which is in the background. It shows trees that appear to be behind the kangaroos but in front of the fire, and the kangaroos are in the foreground closest to the views, along with some shrubs and bushes with them.

Lani Gallagher, Year 10,

‘Body Image’

Patrick Williams, Year 10, ‘Lino Print at Home’

This is a sunset with mountains and trees in the background. There are leafless and burnt trees with the Australian flag also burning. I did the color red behind because during most fires, the sky is red.

PS From Ms Caddey. We are getting each area of the Arts to share practise in our Department meetings. This

week Mr Gallagher lead us in some expressive drama warmup games. Of course it ended in hijinks… and a reminder…
