It took several attempts to

meet with Newham’s new young mayor to discuss her

election and what she plans to do with her time in office.

Having sat down with Alex

Jarrett, I understand why.

Not only is she immensely busy as a

Year 11 student at Lister Community School but she has big

plans for the young people of Newham and a determination to see

them put into effect.

Two months ago Alex was elected by her peers to be Newham’s Young

Mayor, taking over the role from Yaseen Bux. The Mayor is in office

for one year and with an elected

Youth Counc i l works w i th parliamentary members, local

councillors and officers in the borough, to represent the views of

young people in Newham.

With a budget of £25,000, the

Youth Council’s job is to deliver the

promises made in the Young Mayor’s manifesto.

Last week, Alex and her team presented their manifesto points to

Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales’

office for feedback. Having had their plan accepted, work can begin

to deliver the promises they made to the young people of Newham.

Alex highlighted the need for young

people to have access to more study spaces and resources and the

creation of a summer festival in

Newham in the manifesto that got her elected.

When I met with Alex on Monday, 30th November her plans for

delivering these objectives were

already well on their way.

At the same time, Alex conveyed a

commitment to continuing the projects of the outgoing Young

Mayor. She showed great sympathy and understanding of the mental

health complaints which start to

appear in people as young as 13 years-old. She told me that

awareness early on can help to combat suffering in the future.

Highlighting problems which affect

young people but can go unnoticed typifies Alex’s plans for her time as

mayor. She is working with libraries, youth centres and other leisure

facilities to provide a safe space for young people to go. This is a

response to libraries shutting at 5

30pm, when schools are long closed, leaving young people

without anywhere to go to study and limiting the safe spaces

available to them in the area. This

marks another continuation of the former Mayor’s policies: by

providing them with somewhere to go, young people will be kept off

the streets and away from crime,

both as victims and perpetrators. Alex sees her plan as steering

young people’s energy in a different

direction. Her plan is to get the

facilities to run workshops and

activities for young people, giving them a real alternative in Newham.

However, Alex also plans to “break that stereotype of young people

and showcase that we are capable

of doing well.” Her plan is to celebrate Newham’s young people

through a summer festival which will give young people in the area

the opportunity to perform and display their talents.

When not taking the weight of the

young of Newham on her shoulders, Alex is Deputy Head Girl at Lister

Community School and is also building a career as an actress. She

is intent upon being a good role

model and sees this as being a common core throughout all of her

responsibilities. Whether being the Newham Young Mayor is her

greatest role, only time will tell,

however she is approaching it seriously and respectfully, with

ideas and originality.

Training will be provided by Jake Wiid and Neal

Law Firm Pinsent Masons

hosted eight school teams from Newham and Waltham Forest

for the annual schools debate at their international headquarters in

London on Friday 13 November.

Competing for the Rokeby team was Declan Cawdron-Gray, Fawaz

Shittu, Kwei Abloso, Bassam Ahmed and Yuness Lounis.

A few days earlier the team took part in a London-wide Transport for

London debate which focused on

the role women played in the transportation industry, where the

Rokeby team turned in a strong performance.

However this left them with little

time to prepare for Friday’s debate, although on Wednesday a lawyer

from Pinsent Masons visited the school to coach the students. The

topic for discussion was ‘Should

curfews be introduced in London for

young people’, a topic that the boys supported and they were arguing

for the motion.

The Rokeby team were up against

Buxton School in the first round,

who were well prepared and strong debaters.

Declan and Fawaz opened their account well and presented some

strong points as to why curfews would benefit London. Kwei and

Bassam interrogated the Buxton

team whilst Yuness rounded off their case brilliantly. They were

declared the winner of the debate and proceeded through to the final

against Plashet School.

The topic for the final was: “Surveillance is a good thing; if you

have done nothing wrong then you have nothing to hide”. Again

Rokeby was arguing for the motion.

It was a hard-fought final that

ultimately saw the team from Plashet declared the winner.

Pinsent Masons’ Senior Partner, Richard Foley, said: "This is the

second year we have run this event

and like last year it has been great fun and truly inspirational. The

commitment the pupils made in terms of preparation, thought and

inspiration was outstanding. These children have a real talent for

debating and I hope that the event

will have given them a lot of confidence, and maybe even a taste

for a career in law and advocacy.”

Final: Rokeby vs. Plashet

Award money will provide the finishing touches to the very

project that he won it for.

Fourteen year old Klaudio, who is in

Year 10 at St Bonaventure's School,

was given the award for his drive and determination in getting a

Design Technology project off the ground as part of a national STEM

(Science Technology Engineering

and Maths) challenge that aims to remove pollutant gasses from cars.

Showing great leadership skills, he put together a detailed plan of his

ideas and costings. He spent many

hours researching, preparing, planning and sourcing ideas and

parts for a go kart. He was very meticulous and was the driving

force behind the project. He was

responsible for organising Tuck Shops during breaktimes and

lunchtimes to help raise funds and his dedication and passion for the

STEM subjects is to be applauded.

Klaudio plans to use his £200 award money to help refine the group's

"When will I ever use maths

outside school?" is a lament teachers hear on a regular

basis up and down the country. At Ranelagh, the staff have

showed pupils the answer.

To mark World Maths Day this year, Ranelagh went into business,

literally, taking a group to Lloyds of London in Lime Street. Pupils stood

on the famous marble trading floor and learnt about the Institution's

325 year history. The objective of

the day was to improve numeracy skills and to educate the youngsters

about careers based on maths. The top City Underwriters and Brokers

were challenged to a series of

maths activities by the Ranelagh pupils on the Lloyd's trading floor

and were impressed with the children's standard of attainment.

Daniel, a Year 3 pupil at Ranelagh and an industry leader of the

future, said: "Best trip ever. I feel

important, I am a businessman."

The World Maths Day visit celebrates

the second anniversary of the three year partnership between the LCT

and the Mayor's Fund for London,

which was established in 2013, to address innumeracy in London

schools and provide after-school maths support to 2000 children

across 24 primary schools.

The pupils were showcasing the numeracy skills they work on at the

maths clubs funded by the Lloyd's Charities Trust (LCT). Iain Webb-

Wilson of LCT commented: "A good understanding of numbers and

confidence in numeracy are vital

skills for employability and are particularly important in our sector."

All of the children who took part in the Lloyd's of London event are

members of Ranelagh's Maths

Kitchen Club, an extra-curricular activity that has been set up by

maths teachers, Carly Frame and Milhaela Barzoi, to make maths

accessible, interesting and fun.

The club incorporates everyday maths

problems found in the kitchen. The

lessons provide activities in many essential areas of maths, such as

fractions, temperatures and time, percentages, along with price and

number comparisons. In addition,

at the end of the session there is

something tasty to eat.

At the end of September parents

were invited to attend a mental maths workshop at the school to

help them assist their children with

their maths studies at home. Every child in the school has received a

book, Mental Maths Five a Day, to help them with their arithmetic at

home and the staff at Ranelagh were delighted to welcome the

book's author, Lorraine Cooper -

form Maryland Primary, Newham, to the school. She launched the

Ranelagh homework project during the workshop.

Old Bonaventurian and Arsenal

player Chuba Akpom paid his old school a visit recently,

popping in to the school in Forest Gate to chat with staff

and students.

Chuba who is now 20, left St Bonaventure's in 2011 to begin his

professional football career but often calls in to see his old

teachers as he likes to stay in touch.

Now on loan to Hull City, Chuba

was back in the East End visiting his

mum and decided to call in to his

old school. He chatted to students and went over to the PE

department to have a cuppa with Head of PE Chris Topping. Mr

Topping added: " It's always nice to

see Chuba and hear how he's getting on in his career and see

how it's developing. He is always very humble and yesterday he

joined in one of our PE lessons and gave some very encouraging advice

to our 6th Form Sports Science

students."

NewShare is the council’s shared

equity scheme which enables those who are unable to afford a large

deposit or the cost of buying on the open market, to own their own

home.

Unlike shared ownership, where rent is paid on a part of the

property and the other part is purchased, NewShare enables the

purchaser to buy their home using a deposit, a mortgage and an equity

loan from Newham Council so that

they can hold the property in full title. They will own 100% of the

property.

Through NewShare, purchasers

could buy as little as 50% of the

property using a deposit and a mortgage. The equity loan from the

council makes up the difference. The percentage of the cost the

purchaser has to fund is calculated on their household income.

Purchasers will need to pay an

annual fee for the equity loan. The

fee does not count towards paying

back the loan. For the first year the fee is calculated on 1.75% of the

value of the equity loan. The fee increases every year in line with the

Retail Price Index (RPI) + 1%

Who can apply for NewShare?

Those with a household income up

to £71,000 can apply for a one or two bedroom home.

Those with a household income up to £85,000 can apply for a three

bedroom home.

All potential buyers must register their interest with the Council’s

agent, meet the affordability criteria and satisfy the agent that they are

actually able to afford the

mortgage/fees repayments.

Anyone can apply, but priority will

be given to applicants who are:

Already on Newham’s housing

waiting list for a council home

Renting from a social housing

provider in Newham (either

the council or a housing association)

Currently working as a
