W hat made the open

evening at Eleanor Smith special was

the same thing that makes it a special school:

its staff and pupils.

Upon entering, guests were greeted by the soft tones of a piano being

played by one of the pupils at Eleanor Smith. Meanwhile, other

pupils, demonstrating exemplary manners, handed out refreshments.

The focus of the evening was the

Resilience Framework and The Thrive Approach. Eleanor Smith is

doing ground-breaking work on both. Staff were invited to an

International Conference in Canada

to present their work on Whole School Resilience and Eleanor Smith

will be the first Centre for Thrive in London.

As Head teacher Graham Smith

said: “We are ambitious for all our

students who deserve the best.”

Eleanor Smith has been implementing

a Resilience Framework over the past few years in collaboration with

Brighton University. Resilience uses

methods which support and develop children with complex needs by

instilling a sense of belonging in students, supporting learning,

helping students to cope with social and emotional difficulties and teaching

students to take responsibility.

The Thrive Approach encourages the regulation and promotion of

positive relationships at the School and measures pupil behaviour in

line with child development. Details

are available here, however, the

best showcase for The Thrive Approach is evidenced at Eleanor

Smith.

Guests perused the work of pupils

at the school and spoke to staff, parents and pupils alike about how

the school operates. When asked

about what it was like being a pupil at Eleanor Smith, one boy

responded: “I get to do activities and learning that I don’t get to do

at normal school”.

The Thrive and Resilience Approaches are

extensive, multi-disciplinary and fully-integrated into school life. This

has certainly been the case at Eleanor Smith and over the course

of the evening four staff members

explained the implementation of Resilience and Thrive.

Statistics of performance at Eleanor

Smith show that the school’s approach is achieving results: last

year, of the 37 pupils at Eleanor Smith, 29 increased their attendance

in mainstream schools, which corresponds to 78%.

The highlight of the presentation

was the account from a former Eleanor Smith pupil and his mother

about the impact that attending this school has had on them both. He

has gone on to do four work

experience placements and is currently continuing studying at

college. He said: “What makes it even more special is the staff. They

care about us”.

His mother told her story candidly and, indicating her son, said good-

humouredly: “You wouldn’t say this child went to Eleanor Smith.” Such

is the stigma attached to this and similar schools. However, with the

success of Eleanor Smith’s approach,

spearheaded by Resilience and Thrive, more families will start

saying with pride: “This child went to Eleanor Smith.” And so they

should.

How would you teach your

pupi ls about Columban missionary fathers in Pakistan?

In the RE Department at St Bonaventure’s the answer was to

speak with them directly.

School Chaplain, Jess Barnett, arranged the school’s first Skype

live link chat which she hopes: "Will be the first of many exciting

learning conversations across the

world".

Despite a power cut, Year 10 students got to hear about the work

the missionary fathers are doing in the predominantly Muslim nation

and gained a unique insight into

environmental issues thousands of miles away. The fathers chatted

about the variety of their work, the families they work with and their

experiences.

Distance has no place in the RE classroom at St Bonaventure’s.

Eastlea were early testers of

the micro:bit, a collaborative project from Microsoft, the BBC

and 27 other partners that introduces young people to the

world of programming.

Eastlea pupils took the pocket-sized computers for a test run, under the

watchful eyes of Lord Tony Hall of the BBC and Microsoft CEO Satya

Nadella.

Eastlea is a Lead School in

Computing At School and teacher

Stephen Richards is a Master Teacher. It was through this

connection that the school was loaned the micro:bits and during

lessons and lunch time clubs, every

Year 7 at the school had the chance to see what they could do.

The BBC call the micro:bit its most ambitious education initiative in 30

years. It aims to inspire digital creativity and develop a new generation of tech

pioneers.

The micro:bit is a codeable computer

with motion detection, a built-in compass and Bluetooth technology.

It is completely customisable and

can be programmed to interact with any number of devices through a

combination of simple coding and software. The micro:bits will eventually

be given for free to all Year 7 pupils in the UK.

After testing, a group from Eastlea

were invited to the annual Future Decoded Microsoft conference,

attended by international tech business leaders. The Eastlea group

helped run the Microsoft education

stand and gave demonstrations of

micro:bit programming.

Stephen gave a talk at the conference,

giving an introduction to the micro:bit. He also spoke about the

DFE’s recent decision to cut GCSE and A level ICT from 2018, replacing it

with GCSE Computing only. Stephen

said: “initiatives like the micro:bit are excellent examples of the kind

of partnership that needs to exist between business and education if

computing at schools is going to

succeed”.

NEWSLETTER The Voice of the Docklands Light Railway

Tired of “mind the gap” and

“stand clear of the closing doors”? Ever thought that you

could do better? Year 6 pupil Tyler Nurthen did.

Back in January, Tyler and thirteen

fellow pupils at Ranelagh Primary School entered a competition

launched by the Docklands Light Railway School Project to design a

s a f e t y a n n o u n ce m e n t f o r passengers travelling on the DLR.

Primary school children across

London were invited to record or write an interesting and informative

message that would brighten the passengers' day and improve their

journey. These could include

information about the network, travel safety and reminders about

taking care of possessions.

The pupils researched the railway,

listened to the announcements currently used on the station

platforms and trial led their

messages in the classroom.

Tyler’s entry was selected by

Inspector Shaw from the British Transport Police and the team of

DLR employees as one of the three

winning entrants named the ‘Voice of Docklands Light Railway’.

So on the 2nd July if you were at Gallions Reach Station or at West

Ham Station during the Autumn you

may have been surprised to hear Tyler’s message from the speakers:

"Hello Governor, if you are silly enough to leave your luggage on

the train you will need to talk to the Dockland staff. Stand behind the

yellow line for your safety."

Lucy Sabia, DLR Community Ambassador, who introduced the

competition to the London primary schools and met the winning

children at the Control Centre said:

"Tyler's warmth and enthusiasm

captivated the hearts of everyone involved in this project. He was the

guest of honour at the recent Newham Mayor's Show where his

presence was warmly greeted by

all. It was a pleasure for KeolisAmey Docklands to work with

Tyler, recording his safety announcement, and we hope he

enjoyed hearing it at the stations.

Well done Tyler."

The three winners visited the DLR

Control Centre at Beckton. Where they were treated to a tour, spoke

with the DLR staff and recorded their announcements on to a

scratch pad, from which they were

broadcast that same day.

Tyler has also been made the West

Ham Station Adoptee, under the Community Adopt a Station

Scheme, and on 3rd December

2015, accompanied by his Grandmother and Susan Green,

Learning Mentor, at Ranelagh

Primary School, will attend a Community Presentation Night at

the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Sue Green said: "I am sure that Tyler's humorous announcement

brightened the day of all of the

passengers travelling on the Docklands Light Railway. West Ham

is the nearest DLR station to Ranelagh Primary School and

Tyler's family, friends, the staff and

pupils, at Ranelagh are all proud of Tyler's success."
