The Fall 2012 Discovery Days was

a week of excitement as prospective

students enjoyed the BHU classroom and

campus experience. The Student Life and

Enrollment Management (SLEM) team

worked collectively with all departments to

ensure that our guests had the best

experience possible. The SLEM team

prepared gift

bags, set up

for

roundtables

and greeted our guests. The week kicked off

on Saturday September 15, 2012 with our

Master of Business Administration Program

(MBA). Students and guests enjoyed a

presentation by Dr. Jarrod Burch; in which

he gave an exemplary presentation on the

United States Constitution, the voting

process (electoral college) and explained to

them the importance of getting out to vote.

The BHU

Student

Government

Association

(SGA) led by

SGA

President

Arthur

Breland

sponsored a

Student and Staff Cookout where we all

gathered as one BHU family to eat and

fellowship. This was a relaxing moment as

we all took a break from their strenuous

work load to enjoy the day.

The Religious Studies Department, under

the leadership of Professor Walter Turner

had a great showing of guests and students

as they held two roundtable discussions

covering all aspects of Creationism.

Professor Dennis Malone led an

excellent discussion along with

Professor John Nash on this

subject. They also took

questions from students and

guests as they dove deeper into the subject

of Creationism. Our Leadership

Studies Department, under the

leadership of Professor Betty

Palmer, hosted a Discovery

Moments in Leadership where students and

guests were able to talk to our professors

and get to know them. Both of our

undergraduate programs did

an excellent job of providing

students and guests with an

unforgettable experience.

The Division of Graduate

Studies under the leadership of

Dr. Mark Hardgrove, hosted a

Roundtable discussing “Ecclesiastical

Leadership and the Role of Seminary in

Preparing Students”. Dr. Hardgrove

accompanied by two BHU professors Dr.

Percy Johnson and Dr. Johnathan Alvarado,

gave insights from their various backgrounds

and experience. The students were actively

engaged as they participated in this thought

provoking discussion.

Our weekly chapel experience, facilitated

by Dean of the Chapel Dr. Johnathan

Alvarado and his team, was filled with

worship, fellowship and excellent preaching

as our guest discovered what makes BHU

so distinct. On

Tuesday we

heard from

Graduate

Studies

Department Chair Dr. Mark Hardgrove and

Pastor of Conyers Church of God as he

preached on Purity, Prayer, Power and

Praise. On Thursday we heard from BHU

Alumni and new faculty member Pastor Billy

Honor Senior Pastor of New Life

Presbyterian Church as he reminded us that

“If you want to find your place you have to

get in the book and find out

who you are.” As a special

treat for our evening students

who are not able to enjoy the

BHU Chapel experience on

Tuesdays and Thursdays, we

hosted an evening chapel.

Bishop James Morton, Senior

Pastor of New Beginning F.G.B.C. gave us

all hope as he told us told us to “not to give

up.” He encouraged us to “wait until God

says move because he hears the sound of

the abundance of rain” and that “there is a

small cloud rising.” When asked about the Chapel Experience

for the week Dr. Alvarado said “The students

were blessed, the word of God was

preached and God was glorified.”

I am Juanita

Sims and I am elated to say that I am a “10 Year Breast Cancer Survivor”. Fortunately I

had a mammogram in March 2002 and everything was fine. The next month I found a lump in one of my breast. I went to the doctor to have a biopsy done and when I returned for the results the doctor asked if I had family with me, which I replied “No”. Afterwards he asked me to sit down and I knew without a doubt that something was wrong. There’s a saying that “no news is good news”, the doctor had news for me and it was not good. I sat for a few moments and digested what had been said to me and I concluded the conversation with the doctor and prepared myself for this unknown journey. When I got home I kneeled down and said “Lord have mercy on me”. People told me all sorts of stories about how sick I would be and that it was ok because I know that God wants us to rest in him. To anyone going through this remember, to just trust God. My visits for treatment were fine except when the nurse had to insert the needle in the vein in my chest, it was so painful. I kept a smile on my face and encouraged others, as I was being encouraged. It’s good to know the Lord, every strand of hair on our head is numbered. It’s good to have a Savior that we can cast our cares upon. BHU I never left the office sad because I knew He would take me through this storm. Upon completing my treatments I was asked to head a support group, in which I declined because I loved

patients and did not want to have a relationship with them, then suddenly one would not show up. After retiring, I had an opportunity to become a Patient Navigator at Grady Memorial Hospital through the Avon Foundation Community Education and Outreach in February of 2007. I volunteered in the Grady breast clinic and I met people from all over, loved them and gave them support. and it was easy for me to relate to the people and their pain. Pushing forward I was the first survivor to join the Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Survivor’s Choir that has now been in existence for 10 years. In 2002 I stood firmly on the belief that “if God doesn’t do it, then it can’t be done”. It’s 2012 and I am still standing on that fact. I have had some good days and many hills in my life, but at the end of the day God has, and still is good to me. I ask Him to create in me a clean heart, renew a right spirit within me, let me love unconditionally, and as I yield to His ways He keeps on doing great things for me. God brought me through Ovarian Cancer, Non– Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Breast Cancer. I can humbly say that I am a survivor. My BHU family trust God, get your check up, walk in His ways and as Professor Timothy Frazier would say “Trust the Process”. Article Submitted by: Mrs. Juanita Sims

BHU is always looking to broaden our degree offer-

ings to live out our mission to “Develop Global Leaders for Ministry and Marketplace”. We were recently ap-proved to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administra-tion (BBA) coming Spring 2013. This undergraduate de-gree is for today's business professionals who will under-take a broad range of responsibilities involving interper-sonal activities, decision-making, integration of technol-ogy, strategic communications, and teamwork. The BBA will also work hand in hand with the MBA Program; stu-dents have the opportunity to pursue dual degrees in a 5 year program in which at program completion will have earned both a BBA and MBA. During the course of a student’s time in this program they will go through four major components; General Studies, Religious Studies, Core Business, and Electives. The class offerings include: International Market and Trade Agreements, Human Resources Management and Global Business Management, which will fully equip a leader for the marketplace.

As we endeavor to reach a diversity of people, we will also offer a Certificate in Nonprofit Development and Management starting Spring 2013. This Certificate pro-vides a blended format both online and in the classroom. This program is one of a few graduate certificates of-fered at Christian Universities. This 18– credit hour pro-gram is designed for the student to complete in just twelve months. According to the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, nonprofit

organizations are the fastest growing corporations in

Georgia, therefore this program is designed for the stu-

dent to cover all aspects of this ever growing trend.

For more information on these programs the BBA, MBA

or the Nonprofit Development and Management Certifi-

cate please contact Dr. Angelita Howard.

Ms. Shirley Rankine Class of 2006 Coming from experience, what has been your biggest challenge since graduating from BHU? My biggest challenge has been one that plagues many college graduates and that is finding work in my field of study. Ms. Rankine since graduating from BHU what have you done in ministry? Since moving to Orlando, FL I have been working as a flight attendant and I have started a Bible Study for flight attendants. I am also an ordained Elder and serve at Exousia Lighthouse Christian Ministries.

Based on your experience after BHU, how did BHU best prepare you for your ministry/career? BHU prepared me in an excellent way because while being here it pushed me to do some deep soul searching and developed the biblical foundation needed to carry me through my life as a minister. As you look toward the future is there anything you are currently working on? My current pursuit is to be faithful in the small things and trusting for greater things. Looking back over all of your life experiences and what you have gone through as a mother, student and minister, what has been your guiding scripture? My guiding scripture has been Romans 8: 28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.” KJV By: Evan Simmons [email protected]

Donor Spotlight >> Dr. Sherry Gaither

For the Fall 2012 Newsletter we have chosen to interview BHU Professor and BHU Supporter Dr. Sherry Gaither. Dr. Gaither what is your relationship with BHU? God has blessed me to be a part of the teaching faculty for the past twenty-two years. My tenure began in 1991, when I was asked to teach one of the first extension classes at New Birth Baptist Church. Since that time, I have served as Director of Extensions, the initial developer of the Leadership Department, and Chairperson of Leadership. Every semester I try to “juggle” pastoring, teach-ing, and traveling, because I am commit-ted to BHU, our president and the student body. My husband and I are honored to partner with Dr. Karanja to fulfill the vision that God has given him. BHU has truly become a “change agent”, impacting our nation and our world. How did your time in BHU affect/influence you? Our former college presi-dent, Dr. Sam Chand and Dr. Karanja, were both instrumental in helping me to “fall in love” with Africa. Over ten years ago, I was asked to go to Kenya, to represent the Leadership Department, as part of a delega-tion from BHU. Since that time, I have served in Kenya, Ghana, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Zimbabwe, and sev-eral cities in Mexico. I feel honored that God would allow me to play a role in imparting knowledge to our students. It is truly a blessing to see how God is using the students who matriculate through BHU.

Fall 2012 Issue

Describe your experience as a current donor of BHU: My husband and I believe that BHU is valuable resource in our community. The greatest investment that one can make—is in people. We are committed to ensuring that BHU remain financially stable and we believe in “giving back” to institutions that have played a major role in em-

powering students.

What are you currently involved with? I wear so many “hats”—I’m a co-pastor, professor, life coach, author, entrepreneur, wife, mother, and grand-mother and with all of that, I still have a passion and invitations to do mission work.
