NEWSLETTER Ms. Campbell Ms. Holt Ms. Harper Spelling This week’s spelling and vocabulary words are a review from the first three lessons of the Classical Roots Workbook. No spelling test this week. Anchorage Public School Monday, October 29, 2012 Reading/Language/Writing Students will read selections this week and determine if the point of view is first or third person. Students will not have a reading story or reading comprehension test this week. The grammar skill this week is reviewing nouns. Math We will spend much of our time in math this week multiplying two, two digit numbers. We will be comparing several different algorithms: traditio nal, partial product, and area model. We will also reinforce our multiplication skills by multiplying by multiples of ten and by practicing at school & at home on www.mathtrainer.com . Our quiz on Thursday will include review problems on factors, multiples, & prime numbers as well as multiplication problems & problems that test the understanding of the distributive & commutative properties. The quiz will consist of: 16 MC questions (1 point each) & 1 Extended Response (worth 4 points) for a total of 20 points. Good luck on the quiz! Social Studies This week in social studies we will study the time when Europeans arrived in North America, and they met thousands of Native American cultures with different ways Upcoming Dates: 1. October 30 th - Picture Retakes 2. October 31 st - Homeroom Class Halloween Parties. 3. November 5 th - Abe Lincoln presentation. 4. November 6 th - Parent / Teacher Conferences. No school for students. 5. November 16 th - 1 st grading trimester ends. ANCHORAGE VISION The Anchorage School Learning Community Launching Life Long Learning Through... Inspiration – Exploration – Connection Just a Reminder: 1. Students will bring home today the time for your parent teacher conference. Please remember these are student led conferences, so your child should plan to attend. 2. We are in great need of pencils and checking pens in the classroom. It seems that we have quickly gone through all of our pencils. Any donations are greatly appreciated. 3. I would LOVE any left over Halloween candy you have. I keep it in a basket and use it for positive reinforcements throughout the week. THANKS! 4. Mrs. DeSmet and Mrs. Kern are planning our classroom Halloween party. I sent a request home with each child on Friday for an item to LEAPS Students will work on point of view the next two weeks in their LEAPS classes.

Social StudiesThis week in social studies we will study the time when Europeans arrived in North America, and they met thousands of Native American cultures with different ways of looking at the work. We will explore when these cultures collided, the dramatic changes that occurred. Finally, we will compares and contrasts European and Native American cultures. Students will learn how beliefs, language, social and political organizations and economic relationships contribute to a culture and how two different world views shaped the history.
