Cultural Diversity Day

Celebrating Cultural Diversity Day

Monday 4th March 2019

In order to celebrate the diversity and strength of our community, Mount View is holding a special

event – Cultural Diversity Day - on Monday, March 4. Children are encouraged to come to school in

the traditional dress or colours of their countries.

In order to kick off the day with dance and song, Assembly has been moved to the start of the day.

We would like to invite all members of our community to join us at this event.

It will run from 9:00 – 9:50am and be in the PE Centre.

The day will have 3 focus areas:

Assembly – Celebrating all MVPS cultures through wearing of traditional dress or colours of

their culture.

Expert Activities – Focus on Chinese culture – valuing & enhancing our Languages – Mandarin

Program

Classroom Activities – Focus on Victorian Curriculum – Hands-on activities about a variety of

people and cultures.

It would be fantastic to have parent support and involvement with this day. Please contact your

child’s classroom teacher if you are available to assist.

If you have questions about the day – please talk to your child’s classroom teacher or language

teachers.

Healthy Eating Policy

1. RATIONALE:

Mount View Primary School is committed to a whole school approach to healthy eating. This

is in line with the nutrition policies and guidelines for schools developed by the Department of

Education and Training (DET) – “School Canteens and Other School Food Services” policy.

Healthy eating covers all situations where food and drink is supplied in the school

environment including: Mount View PS canteen, school excursions, school camps, fundraising

events, classroom rewards, school activities such as celebrations and sports days, and food

used in curriculum activities.

2. AIMS:

As an International Baccalaureate World School, Mount View believes that childhood and

adolescence are important times for establishing balanced, life-long, healthy eating habits

which can benefit students in three ways:

1. Good nutrition contributes to good health and wellbeing and this is vital for positive

engagement in learning activities.

2. Short term: maximises growth, development, activity levels and good health

3. Long term: minimises the risk of diet related diseases later in life

3. GUIDELINES

3.1 Curriculum teaching and learning

To integrate healthy eating/nutrition education into all year levels through the provision of

learning opportunities as outlined in the Victorian Curriculum:

Support healthy food choices

Inclusion of learning activities that provide students with knowledge, attitudes and

skills to make positive healthy food choices and learn about the variety of foods

available for good health

Availability of fresh, clean tap water to students at all times and the encouragement

of them to drink water regularly throughout the day, inclusive of the promotion of

water bottles in classrooms

Encouragement of students to eat a healthy breakfast and at regular intervals in

order to promote active learning

Encouragement of students to eat in a supervised and appropriate social

environment

Provision of rewards/encouragements for students that are not food or drink

Notification to parents when learning activities offer the students the chance to try

different foods

Liaison with families in order to arrange a suitable food supply for students who have

specific dietary requirements e.g. Allergies for school events e.g. class parties, end of

year celebrations, camps etc.

3.2 Classroom

To integrate healthy eating/nutrition concepts in all classrooms by:

Lollies or confectionery should only be used in classrooms for educational

purposes. E.g. Victorian Curriculum outlines lessons where Smarties and Tiny

Teddies are used as a part of the lesson format, but these should be used

sparingly.

Lollies and confectionery should not be given to students as a reward for good

work efforts or behaviour as this counteracts the policy outlined by the

Department of Education and Training.

Sharing food from lunchboxes is a practice that should be discouraged in

classrooms or in the playground due to the heightened risk of allergic reactions

to foods or anaphylaxis issues.

3.3 Special Occasions

To discourage the association of unhealthy/junk foods with celebratory or special

occasions by:

Encouraging all teachers to use healthy food choices or non- food items as

rewards

Encouraging parents to send healthy choices to school for children’s birthdays

Asking parents to give 24 hours notice to the class teacher if they are going to

bring a food item in for their child to share with the class.

Providing an option for parents at the beginning of the school year to advise

the class teacher as to whether their child will participate in any celebratory

food that is offered, or alternatively provide information on what they can and

cannot participate in. If parents do not wish their child to participate they might

like to send along “something special” from home to ensure that their child is

included.

Not allowing lolly bags or pre-packaged confectionery bars to be sent to

school for student consumption.

3.4 Lunch Orders/Canteen

The canteen is operated by the school for the provision of food and refreshments as a

convenience to students, parents and members of staff. The canteen services are

provided within the guidelines to hygienic food handling policies relating to student

health, minimum disruption to student learning time and sound financial management.

The canteen aims:

To provide a range of nutritious lunch and refreshment options every school day.

To provide options where students can develop self-responsibility for their own

nutrition.

To meet all requirements of hygienic food storage and handling.

To provide a diverse, nutritious menu through a healthy food service

To provide an online service for parents to choose and pay for lunches

3.5 After School Care

The current after school care provider is required to comply with the school’s

policy on food and nutrition

3.6 Families and Community

Mount View Primary School participates in a range of special events and community

events throughout the year and has a role to educate families about food and

nutrition to encourage healthier eating habits at home and school by:

Page 7: Newsletter - Mount View Primary School · 2019-04-22 · No. 1~ February 8, 2019 Page 2. Cultural Diversity Day Celebrating Cultural Diversity Day Monday 4th March 2019 In order to

No. 1~ February 8, 2019

Page 7.

Recommending that the organisers of these special events and community

events include healthy alternatives from which parents and students can

choose.

Providing a range of alternatives so that people have choice in relation to the

foods that are made available

Encouraging healthy lunch box choices

Offering school camp/excursion menus according to healthy food guidelines

Not allowing any fast food or “take away” lunches to be provided to students

by parents at lunchtime

3.7 Nude Food

Mount View Primary School promotes the concept of Nude Food and encourages all

students to bring a healthy lunchbox free of packaging to school for lunch and snacks.

Nude Food is environmentally sound in that it reduces the amount of packaged foods

that students might bring to school and eat

4. Evaluation:

This policy will be reviewed as part of the school’s three-year review cycle.

This policy was last ratified by School Council on 29 November 2016.

Movie Night

The Parents Association will be holding a

Movie Night for all students and their families

on Friday, 22nd of March. Tickets sales and

further information for the event will be

announced shortly.

‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ has been chosen

as a movie that the whole family can enjoy.

Parent Financial Contributions 2019

Mount View Primary School is a great school, achieving outstanding results. The Parent

Contributions made to the school have supported this objective. We are proud to offer our

students a comprehensive, well-resourced educational program and continually strive for the

highest standards across all aspects of our programs. To achieve our goals it is fundamental to

provide quality resources which support 21st Century teaching and learning as well as a safe and

secure environment. The Mount View PS Parent Contributions are quite moderate compared to

many schools and the school aims to use these contributions to deliver educational initiatives in the

current year.

The Victorian Government provides for much of our school’s basic operational requirements with a

financial grant that is paid to the school in quarterly instalments. This covers some curriculum support

and items such as contract cleaning, gas and electricity, water rates, facilities, telephone, furniture,

administration and basic repairs to buildings. In order to provide educational programs of a standard

and quality expected in our community, funds, in addition to those provided by the Government,

are needed through Parent Contributions.

The application of Parent Contributions in 2018 once again allowed the school to be extremely well

resourced which contributed to the outstanding and comprehensive educational program that was

provided at Mount View PS.

As in previous years, the Parent Contributions are made up of essential, optional and voluntary

components (some of which are tax deductable). We are fortunate that our school community

value the high standard of resourcing that payment of these contributions provides. The School

Council and Mount View staff greatly appreciate all of your contributions so that we can continue

to provide outstanding facilities and resources for our students.

To sustain these, and bring our 2019 plans to fruition, we seek your support in the payment of

Essential, Optional and Voluntary contributions.

Student Enrolment Details

Please ensure that all your contact details and your current occupations details are updated at

the Office. Our Administration Officer, Sharyn Asquith works diligently to maintain accurate student

enrolment records. These records have an impact on school funding levels and need to be

updated regularly.

Road Rules

The safety of the children is a responsibility shared by the whole Mount View community. Many of

us are alarmed that a number of drivers regularly show disregard for the road rules. The Monash

Council, VicRoads and Victoria Police have been notified that poor driving habits are putting

students at risk each day. Some key areas for attention are:

No U-turns allowed in Shepherd Road

2-minute Parking means don’t park and leave the car

Use the crossing when the flags are displayed

Don’t park over the driveways

Don’t park near the crossing

No double parking

School staff regularly speak with offending parents who drive poorly. In order to avoid

embarrassment I implore all parents to rise to their responsibilities as drivers. Offenders can expect

to be fined by Monash Council or VicRoads.
