FROM THE PRINCIPAL P and C Trivia Night A reminder to all of our parents, that the 2018 P and C Trivia Night is to be held at the school on the evening of Saturday 18 August. If you haven’t already, please make a note in your diary. Further information is provided later in this newsletter. Outstanding Students at Model Farms At times, the news we hear through media sources can be quite negative towards the actions, opinions and attitudes of our youth. However, this can be viewed as a result of “bad news creating reader interest” that often distorts our perception of reality. At Model Farms, we are fortunate to have an outstanding cohort of students who involve themselves within our community and offer support where appropriate, often well beyond the call of duty. The correspondence I received last week from a community member is another example of this.

To whom it may concern, I am pleased to inform you about a lovely student of yours that helped my elderly 90-year-old mother two weeks ago. While shopping at Kellyville Woolworths, my mother used the facilities within the store and one of your students, Steph in grade 12, was quietly enjoying her break and when I approached her she made very mature small talk while I waited for my mother. Unfortunately, my mother was having some trouble and while in a highly distressed state I asked Steph if she could please assist my mother, and without any hesitation she happily and humbly helped my mother who was struggling and in a distressed state. While chatting, she mentioned how she was Year twelve student at Model Farms and is also a school leader, which did not surprise me as she displays extreme maturity and leadership skills. I am so thankful and overwhelmed by Steph's kindness and generosity that I had to inform you as I cannot express how pleasant and humble your student is, and I now hold high regard for Model Farms High School and am sure to inform others in the community of the excellence of your students and school. Please give recognition to Steph, though it was a small act of kindness, it displays the positive characteristics your school must employ in your students. It is also nice to know that kind people, especially such young people, still exist. Many thanks to your wonderful student. Well done Stephanie on your actions that have reflected so well upon yourself, your family and your school.

This is your opportunity to have your say via a submission on how you would like to see supported school transport operate in our State. The consultation period will end on 20 July at 5:00pm. There will be some face-to-face consultations held throughout the state, full details will be updated on their website when they are available. For any further information about the discussion paper or submission you can email [email protected].

FAME

As we approach the conclusion of the first school semester in 2018, I would like to remind you of a highlight on our school calendar. Each year, in Week 10 Term 2, the school invites parents, students and community members to come along and experience FAME at the Farms.

This is an outstanding event that showcases the enormous array of talent within the school fraternity, including musicians, dancers, poets, actors and those working behind the scenes such as our sound and lighting crews and stage production team.

I look forward in joining you in supporting everyone involved in the delivery of FAME 2018.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS PLEDGER

Rotary Youth Exchange Rotary Youth Exchange provides a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the many cultures of a different country and a new way of life. Kids and families make life-long friendships with other families, Rotarians and fellow Exchange students, helping to build goodwill and understanding between countries. It is an opportunity of a lifetime for students currently studying in Year 9 or 10, to study abroad, learn a new language and experience the host country’s culture. Students from our District leave in January and return in December. As a Rotary Youth Exchange, students have an opportunity to develop: • personal self-confidence and maturity • a lifetime of international friendships • a real understanding of many different culture • new language skills • a base for future education and career goals • in many ways

Year 10 Minimum Standard Tests We have completed this round of minimum standard testing with Year 10. The reading and numeracy results have been returned to students via their NESA Student Online account. We are still waiting for the writing tests to be marked. Once all scripts have been returned to school we will release these results. Students who did not achieve the minimum standard in any of these tests will be provided with extra support before they reattempt these tests in Term 3. Students can attempt these tests any many times as necessary up until the end of Year 12. Reports Term 2 is a busy time as all the teaching staff have been completing Half Yearly Reports. Years 12 and 11 students have received their reports. Years 7 to 10 will receive their report by the end of term. A frequently used comment that appears on student’s reports concerns the effective use of class time. Students who work effectively in class maximise their learning and increase their understanding of the topics being presented. Working effectively in class means that students are encouraged to: • Sit next to someone who will help them stay on task. • Ask questions whenever they are unsure, unclear or do not understand

something. This may be of assistance to other student who are also unclear about the work being presented.

• Come to the lesson with all books, technology and equipment needed.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS ELLIOTT

There was a great vibe during the school on Tuesday for the School of Origin Game 2. Finally the weather was kind and the year 12 versus the teachers, soccer game was played. Hotly contested by both teams but played with a sense of fun, it was a great spectacle for the school community to watch and be a part of. On this occasion, Year 12 were the victors 4 -1. So I think that makes it 1-1. Bring on game 3! Congratulations to the Model Farms High students who have been selected in oztag teams, to play in the National Junior Oztag Championships in October.

Year 12 students have been notified of some free HSC study courses to be held during the upcoming holidays. Wellbeing News This past term, all students from Year 7 to 12 WISE lesson has been centred around the “I” of WISE which is “Internet”.

Our kids quick and easy access to the cyber world can be a scary concept for most parents. How can we know what our kids are looking at? How can we help them make good decisions and act responsibly? What if there is a problem, who can I turn to or …where to even start?

The ThinkUKnow website run by the Australian Federal Police is a useful website for parents wanting to set some boundaries. It also seeks to answer common questions about internet safety and offer help. Take a look for yourself! https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/parents-portal

• Family Online Safety Contract • Parental controls o What is it? o Why is it important? o What can I do? o Top tips! • Factsheets for parents and carers • Videos for parents and carers o Kids Helpline – Getting help! o Hectors World – Keeping your information safe o Cal’s story – Learn about cyberbullying o Want more resources? • Guides o SOS Guide to Cyber Safety (NEW!) o Social Media and Reputation Management Guide • Research and other information

What’s been happening in your Year?

7 Year 7 started off with a bang! The incursion Big Fish to Little Fish in Term 1 helped us prepare for Year 7 and high school in general. By Week 4 we were heading off to The Great Aussie Bush Camp, Tea Gardens. Activities, such as the mud-run, kayaking, commando and a disco (there were a few more things we did), brought us certainly closer together in a fun and relaxing way. We debriefed upon our return, looking through some great photos in our Year Meeting.

Our WISE lessons focused on a Sense of Belonging, where we learnt that often we can’t change events, but we can change the way we think about things. We have also explored Internet – Safe Surfing. Next term we look at Stereotypes – Racism. In our Year Meeting we viewed Bullying, Stop It! The discussion that followed showed us that bullying affects us all. The incursion Show Some Respect addressed issues such as developing respectful relationships, setting boundaries, rights and responsibilities in relationships, gender and respect, discrimination and harassment, consent, communication and the language of respect, social media and respect; and what to do if you or a friend are the subject of harassment or violence.

In Term 3 we will be presented with the ThinkUKnow program; a presentation that will explore what young people see, say and do online. A visit from the Police Liaison Officer is always welcome to talk about the legal implications of our actions.

Ms C Rawat, Yr 7 Adviser

8 This term, as part of our Internet WISE lessons, Year 8 were able to enjoy a performance from Brainstorm Productions called "Cyberia". The performance was an entertaining investigation into the pitfalls of technology including cyber bullying at school, stress, lack of privacy and de-sensitisation. The year group have also participated in workshops on Managing Stress/Anxiety where they identified possible causes of stress in their lives and discussed ways of reducing it, as well as a workshop on Goal Setting and learning to create SMART goals.

9 Year 9 has had quite a positive semester. Many students have received awards on assembly for their progress with their school work. Cameron N is to be congratulated for helping an elderly citizen who was in need of first aid. Cameron demonstrated his maturity and organised help for the lady and stayed with her till the ambulance arrived. Our Year 9 touch footballers were involved in a Touch Football Gala day which was held at the Kingsway. The boys played well together and did not give up even though they faced strong oppositions. They demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. The girls won all their games bar one. They advanced through to the state finals which is an excellent effort for both the girls and the school. At the State Finals they also faced strong opposition but in their determined spirit, the girls never gave up.

Some of our Year 9 girls, who are in the Pulse Choir, will be performing at The Opera House in August. Jacqueline D has been offered a solo spot in the choir; being chosen is quite prestigious! Rudy D attended nationals for Archery and was awarded gold in the event, which is a tremendous effort. To finish off the term, many Year 9 students will be involved in the production of Fame either in Music, Dance or Drama. I am looking forward to many more accomplishments from this group next semester.

Ms J Gregory, Yr 9 Adviser

10 Term 2 has been a busy time for our Year 10 group. The highlight of the term has been the opportunity for students to select subjects for their Stage 6 studies commencing in 2019. While this can seem a little overwhelming, I am sure the student body will relish the opportunity to take control of their study program. I also encourage all Year 10 students to seek assistance wherever possible to help inform their decision making throughout this important process.

13

We were also lucky to have Amanda Jones, the Police Liaison Officer come and visit Year 10 during one of their Year Meetings this term. She delivered a highly engaging talk about the importance of cyber safety. The students were told of real life scenarios of cyber issues and they were encouraged to remain vigilant in maintaining a secure digital identity.

I will be on leave for a few weeks and entrust my Year to the capable Mr Colefax.

Mr C Puleo, Yr 10 Adviser

11 Year 11 have had a busy Term 2. The have been completing assessment tasks, receiving their first senior report, and focusing on the HSC that is quickly approaching. We have had a focus on current issues with a talk from the Police Liaison Officer about Driving Offences and Road Safety. We also have a performance from Miles through Brainstorm Productions, a partner of RUOkay, about making good choices in social and family situations, which was really well received by all who attended. In Term 3 Week 3, Year 11 will be attending the Crossroads Camp at Morisset where they will once again undertake challenging activities while partaking in 2 sessions regarding real life issues of a young adult. I look forward to seeing all students there and really engage in all activities and discussions at the camp. Overall, it’s been a term that's flown by and with their Yearly Exams just next term and the HSC courses to follow, I can't wait to see what each student will produce next!

Mr M Dawson, Yr 11 Adviser

12 Congratulations to all the Year 12 students who attended and competed in the 2018 Athletics Carnival. It was a fun day had by all and Year 12 added a colourful dimension with their ‘fluoro’ attire, and the very popular tutus.

Some very talented Year 12 students (Liam K, Connor M, Jayden C and Lance V) have been busy producing some entertaining promotional videos for school events. Check them out on our school Facebook page! The School of Origin games are tied 1-1, teachers winning game 1 (Volleyball), and Year 12 winning game 2 (Soccer). Watch this space for the deciding Touch Football game next week.

Preparations for your Trials (first 2 weeks of next term) should be underway. By now you should be following a regular routine of study which includes revising and practicing past papers. Major works in many subjects are due very soon and the Languages Oral Exams are just around the corner.

The $60 deposit for the Formal should have been paid already. The full payment of $120 is due on 1st August, 2018. And you will need to start gathering all your old school pics for the Graduation DVD. Put them on Google Drive to be collated. Now is the time to start bringing in your merit certificates to be presented with your Gold Medallion(s) at the Graduation Ceremony. STAY CALM, and STUDY!

Mrs S Jones, Yr 12 Adviser

Vaccinations Year 10 and 11 vaccinations take place next term on 17 August (Term 3 Week 4) The Meningococcal Vaccine is a one-off for the students in those years. In other words, there will be no catch ups for students away on the day. So please make sure you are present. At time of writing I am still awaiting some forms to be returned. Students can collect a new form from the Languages Staffroom.

There will be some “catch ups” on that day of those Year 7 students who missed their vaccination earlier in term 2. Individual students will be informed if this affects them.

The next round of vaccinations for Year 7 will take place in term 4 (2 November 2018).

FROM HSIE

Year 11 and 12 Economics: Exploring the hidden side of life through podcasts Year 11 and 12 Economics have just submitted brilliant podcast episodes as part of their assessment. Year 11 explored income inequality while Year 12 tried to explain the question on everyone’s mind: why are incomes growing so slowly? These ripped-from-the-headlines topics were presented in the fun and modern format of the podcast, today’s version of the radio show. Not only did they delve into important topics, they now have the skills to start their very own podcast. Having marked both classes, I hope they do just that! I’d like to congratulate all students, and the following students in particular, for producing highly enjoyable and informative podcasts. From Year 11: Vanessa E, Lachlan P, Jane K, Alisha R, Regina S and Jayden B. From Year 12: Emily D, Elizabeth C, Zachariah D and Humza Z. Economics explores the hidden reasons for economic outcomes such as why some countries are rich and some are poor, or why seemingly good solutions to problems can backfire (e.g., implementing or raising the minimum wage). It also helps you make decisions, such as how to allocate your time, and how to think about your post-school life. It is not just about money or the stock market - it is about human life. If you’d like to know more, or are considering studying Economics in senior school, speak to Mr Unicomb in the HSIE staffroom.

こんにちは and Bonjour from the Languages Faculty!

A visit from a group of Japanese students involved in the ICET program saw our students up Soran dancing, doing origami, dressing in Yukata and Kimono and eating Yakisoba! We look forward to the URA Forum camp next term which will see our students meeting up with their new Japanese friends to discuss world issues. Our pen pal letters arrived from Japan, we wrote back, and then they returned again to much excitement! We have been corresponding with Yamada-Nishi Junior High School over the last few years, located in Osaka. The students have really appreciated receiving cards, letters, origami and trinkets from their new friends and some are hopeful to meet them soon. We will send our replies next term, showing off some of our new writing skills we are learning in class. The students in Years 9 and 10 French have been diligently learning and have had the chance to try out some of their language on our visiting French Exchange Student, Paul. It has really brought the subject to life!

FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY

Congratulations to the following Maths faculty merit recipient: Year 9 Lachlan N Year 12 students avoid the end of Term 3 rush and hand in your Maths merits as soon as possible so that we can issue faculty merits for you in time to have them count towards your bronze, silver and gold awards. Check all of the places at home that you could have left Maths merits over the last 6 years; desks, cupboards, wardrobes etc. You only have 13 weeks until graduation!! This week’s news: We are now at the end of another busy term. The Half Yearly Examinations have been marked and the reports have been completed. We hope that you have a safe and relaxing holiday period and come back ready for a wonderful Term 3 at Model Farms! Year 10 subject selections: Year 10 students will be seeking advice regarding which Mathematics course to study in 2019. Whilst Mathematics is NOT compulsory, a majority of the student will choose to study Mathematics Standard in Year 11. Mathematics Standard aims to develop a high level of maths proficiency, and skills that apply directly to real life situation. Mathematics Advanced aims to develop a higher level of mathematical understanding and competence. A student who has always found maths particularly difficult will find standard maths easier. If you are a high achieving student and enjoy a challenge, the higher level of technical engagement with Mathematics Extension 1 course will be the best choice. However, this course requires you to attend two morning classes each week starting at 7.30a.m. The Mathematics Extension 2 course is not studied until Year 12 (Term 4, 2019) and students from Extension 1 will be in discussions with their teacher in Term 3 2019, regarding recommendations this pattern of study. If you are unsure of which course to choose, ask your Mathematics teacher for advice. Tuition: Next term there will be a change to the structure of Maths Tuition. In order to meet the needs of the majority of students, from the start of Term 3 we will no longer be offering mathematics tuition after school on Thursdays. Year 12 Trial HSC: We wish our Year 12 students well for their Trial HSC which will be held in the first two weeks of next term. If students haven’t changed their calculator batteries recently, we advise them to do so. We thank in advance the members of the Mathematics Faculty who are giving their time during the holidays to come in to prepare their Year 12 classes for these very important examinations. Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU PLUS II is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Different brands of scientific calculators have different layouts and it is important that everyone in a class has the same calculator. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.

Have a Mathematical week, From K Lumley and the Maths Faculty Staff
