In February, I handed over my credentials to the President of the Comoros and to the President of Madagascar, a country with which Belgium recently signed an agreement for a state to state loan to build solar power plants. As a tradition, the embassy also supported the Safaricom Jazz Festival. In March, I visited for the first time the Port of Mombasa and, together with our Trade Commissioner Ivan Korsak, welcomed students of the Universty of Brussels (VUB) who came here in order to make market researches on behalf of 20 Belgian companies. I also welcomed our Vice-Prime Minister Alexander De Croo for a visit of the start-up scene. I then moved in the Karura residence with my family. April was particularly devoted to our dealings with UN Environment (UNEP) and the new Kenyan MFA officials, and, together with other European colleagues, to relaunch the political dialogue between Kenya and the UE. We also focused on human resources, as five members of our staff will leave us in this summer. The Embassy will thus undergo some sort of lifting. I really much hope that the transition will be smooth and am looking forward to present to you new faces in the next edition of this newsletter. Best regards, Nicolas Nihon Consular News Elections in Belgium In 2019, Federal and European elections are taking place in Belgium. The main purpose of these plenary sessions is to obtain insights in the situation in Mombasa with the focus on safety and crime; and to discuss specific problems the honorary consuls are confronted with when they assist our compatriots. Noëmi is now officially a full-fledged diplomat with strong interests in human rights, Kenyan politics, Madagascar, but also in swimming with sea turtles in Watamu and Swahili catch phrases. Alexander De Croo in the «Silicon Savannah" Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation and Digital Agenda Alexander De Croo, made a short but intense visit to Nairobi on 22 and 23 March. It is no coincidence that the organizers of the Mission, Close the Gap & Startups.be, brought the minister and 40 Belgian startups, companies and NGOs to the capital of Kenya. The city is indeed one of the most important technical hubs in Africa with a thriving start-up scene. Here, a whole generation of young people with fresh ideas and innovations have started setting up their own technology companies that solve local problems and create jobs. Kenya has learned that digitization and a dynamic private sector are crucial factors for sustainable development. It is exactly that approach that Belgium supports through the Digital 4 Development platform. The Kenyan Minister of ICT and techie Joseph Mucheru opened the event in Metta co-working space where start-up companies presented the vibrant technical landscape of Kenya. CS Mucheru was very enthusiastic about meeting Minister De Croo with whom he shared the same ambition and best practices with regards to e-gov, mobile money and telecom. Public Diplomacy Do you know G-STIC? G-STIC stands for Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Conference Series. It is an annual forum held in Brussels that brings together decision-makers, researchers and developers. Their goal is to highlight technologies that can implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreements. Six institutes around the world are at the origin of this initiative, among which VITO (Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek). On the 3rd of May our compatriot Veerle Vandeweerd, Policy Director of G-STIC, organized an information session with the Embassies of Belgium and Brazil at the United Nations Headquarters in Nairobi to raise awareness among Member States about the next edition of this conference (G-STIC-2018) which will take place from November 28 to 30. During the information session in Nairobi, a few Kenyan start-ups explained how existing technologies can offer both effective and realistic solutions and have a positive economic and social impact. "Mobi-Water" for example is a project launched in the slum of Kibera. The project aims to improve access to drinking water for the population by controlling the water level of reservoirs and sending real time information about the water availability by telephone or computer. The Belgian Corner Easter Brunch On the 9th of April, our consul Hilde Van Inthoudt invited the Belgian families in Kenya to a delicious Easter brunch. Needless to say that the egg hunt was a big success amongst the chocolate loving children (and their parents!) Alumni of Belgium in Kenya. On the 16th of March, Consul Hilde van Inthoudt organised a networking event at Nairobi Serena Hotel for the alumni of Belgium in Kenya. Honorable Judge Wanjala, who studied at KUL, gave an inspiring speech at the event that was attended by many enthusiastic alumni who enjoyed the Belgian beers and African tunes after the key notes of ambassador Nihon. Belgium already welcomed more than 400 brilliant Kenyan students and the alumni network keeps growing. Alumni of Belgium who want to learn more about the network can send an email to Alumni- [email protected] Belgian Club Kenya FIFA World Cup The Belgian Red Devils will be playing their first match in the FIFA World Cup against Panama on the 18th of June. The weekend will probably take place end of October. The Belgian Club will confirm the dates and send more details soon. Did you know...? ... that the design of the residence of Belgium, now renovated after a year and a half of tireless efforts, was inspired by the Grand Trianon in Versailles. The building on Karura avenue in Muthaiga was constructed between 1949 and 1952 on request of Jean Pierre Pichot, a flamboyant Frenchman who inherited a fortune from a wealthy coffee estate owner. The Kenyan architect Idris Davies had a hard time scaling down the original grand design of Pichot to render it more practical for modern living while at the same time ensuring it would be large enough to accommodate the antique furniture that was to be installed. The Trianon on Karura soon became synonymous with partying and salon entertainments of a kind never witnessed before in East Africa. But when coffee prices dropped drastically and the flow of money dried up, Pichot had to sell it all. The Trianon was bought by an Englishman in 1955 who turned it into an art gallery. In 1963, following Kenya's independence, the first Belgian ambassador to the new Republic, Baron Eugène Rittweger de Moor, convinced the Belgian government to buy the Trianon in 1966. Monsieur Brunard, one of Belgium's most acclaimed interior decorators then restored and refurnished the house but fifty years later the building urgently needed some repairs and an upgrade to fit modern needs. Since the end of March, the ambassador and his family are bringing back some life to this magnificent house . Our sincere thanks to our Belgian technical agent Stanislav Morovitch, without whom the renovation would have never come to an end.
