The high school chemistry classes have been working on the application of their current study topics in Forensic Science. So far each

chemistry class has completed several forensic labs. The Pre-AP chemistry sophomores have successfully determined the identity of a suspected murder based on fingerprint analysis, shoe size/shape analysis, fiber

analysis, and blood analysis. The students also determined the method of the murder which was poisoning.

In the AP chemistry class, students have been studying bonding. In their first few forensic labs, they have analyzed how dyes stick to different fabrics at different levels of color intensity based on bonding properties and have also determined the way in which different fabrics burn. This burn test is useful in identifying fabrics found at crime scenes. The AP class also analyzed red blood cell volume content to determine if blood-doping was involved in a cycling race as alleged by the 4th place winner. The results indicated that the 4th place winner was just a sore loser, the top three contestants were all within normal levels of red blood cells. Many other high school science classes at Woodlands Christian are also involved in forensic lab experiments as it has become a third quarter focus in the high school. Forensic themed projects will be on exhibit at Science Night on Thursday, March 21st.
