As all of you have, I recently received the Provincial email requesting nominations to receive face visors for care workers. This is where this story for me gets personal, my sister-in-law Susan is a front line care worker at MHA Montpellier care home in Middlesbrough. Sue supports the elderly residents of the care home attending to their every need with kindness and compassion. When a resident recently returned from hospital with COVID-19 the virus spread into the care home and as we are all too aware the virus spreads quickly. Susan tested positive for COVID-19 resulting in their young family having to isolate for 14 days. My brother’s family is happy and cared for, they have two girls of 5 & 10 years old and the news that ‘Mummy had coronavirus’ had a significant impact on them, even more so as my brother was only able to claim 2 weeks statutory sick pay, which gave the family some financial troubles to manage. Having spoken with my Brother and heard the difficulties they were facing and the unknown extent to which they may or may not be affected by coronavirus, when the email was circulat- ed regarding visors I immedi- ately contacted The Mark Provincial Secretary Geoff Nicholson to nominate the care home workers to receive face masks. Brethren I was absolutely astounded by the speed of the response, within 4 days of making the request 80 visors, one for each member of staff, had been delivered to the front line workers at Montpellier care home in Middlesbrough. This story has a happy ending, although Susan felt unwell for most of the isolating period she only had mild symptoms, the whole family has since tested negative for coronavirus, and just this week (29 May 20) the care home has also tested covid-19 free. The supply of these face visors has given the staff at Montpellier the bio-security to continue to provide the care and support the elderly residents ensuring they’re all safe at all times. I’d like to pass on my thanks the Mark province of North and East Yorkshire and also to W.Bro Eddy Mett (WM, Cleveland 1040) who supported my request for visors. A massive personal thank you to the Kent Mark Master Mason who has supplied, at his own time and cost, face visors to key workers up and down the country, Brother I thank you. The staff have asked me to pass on their thanks to both the Cleveland Mark Lodge and also to the Province and the Kent Mark Master Mason who supplied these face visors. At a time in the future they will be happy to receive the Cleveland 1040 charity steward to more formally thank the lodge for this kind and needed supply of Personal Protection.”

MARK CHARITY AT A DISTANCE

‘New

Equipment’

St. Anne’s School at Welton in East Yorkshire is a special school for children with multiple disabilities, the pupils have both physical and mental disabilities and are both residential and day pupils. So, a pupil with physical disability such as a mobility problem, coupled with perhaps lack of hearing and mental impairment presents quite a challenge. Lesley and her staff of two hundred full and part time staff rise to the challenge and have developed many ways to help these children. One initiative, for example, is the opening of a fruit and vegetable stall on site. The staff buy the produce from the wholesale market in Hull and some of the better able pupils man the stall and sell to the residents of Welton. This has been a great success. Obviously, many of the pupils cannot take part and teaching and help is balanced to suit individual requirements. The school has remained open during the lockdown and this has presented a large amount of extra work for the staff. The school has only a limited budget so when they needed some specialised outdoor play equipment the Provincial Charity Committee came to the rescue with a donation of £2000 which will cover the full amount of the equipment and installation. To say Lesley Davis was grateful is an understatement and she sends her thanks to everyone involved and will let us know when the equipment is in situ so we can visit and take photographs for an update.

During the lockdown the Brethren on the Mark North and East Yorkshire Facebook site have had the idea that it would be interesting if we all got to know each others past. In the last issue of Mark My Words the life of Gordon Setterfield was included and many of you commented on the article. Hear are a few others you may find interesting. (Results at the end of this Newsletter).

A I moved out here in 1997, was a special Constable. then did security in London. The

Official Sword Bearer for York for ten years and stopped the Queen at Micklegate Bar with a sword without getting shot. Got threatened by an Admiral for calling a new destroyer a boat. Ran into a fire in a shop in York to put it out and was told off afterwards, my wife thought I was mad. York Brethren may have guessed this one.

B Who am I?

Born in Rotherham in 1963 Left school with poor results, (girls came before education) but I did try! Moved to Doncaster in 1982. Had various jobs mainly selling capital equipment. Became a Special Constable in 1987 and was commended by the Chief Constable twice, once for saving a mans life who tried to commit suicide and also for bravery in a particularly nasty incident. Moved to Aarhus in Denmark in 1990 ( those girls again) before coming back to the UK. I then ran a Superstore in Nottingham before taking a position with a national Pest Control company in 1997, worked my way up to be second in charge at regional level. Moved to the East Coast in 1998. Set up my own business in 2002, still going strong. Elected to the National Committee of the Pest Control board of the British Pest Control Association in 2017. Married, one son, and two Cocker Spaniels. WHO COULD IT BE?

C Who am I?

I was born in Liverpool in 1958, educated in Hereford and Gloucester where I trained as a Food Technologist, also while’s at school I attained the Duke of Edinburgh silver award. Moved to London in 1977 to work at the National Bakery School on the South Bank and in 1981, whilst working for J Lyons at Cadby Hall London, I was part of the Technical team who were commissioned by the Palace to make and decorate the Royal Wedding Cake for HRH Prince Charles and Diana Princess of Wales Moved to Yorkshire in 1989 where I have worked as a Food Technologist for several companies in the area. I was initiated into Freemasonry on the 8th December 2004 and more importantly advanced into the Mark degree on the 7th February 2007 and joined the RAM on the 23rd March 2010. My only regret is I wish I had joined masonry earlier.

D Here is my take on life so far,

I was born in Lancashire in 1943. I joined the RAF on the 19th Feb 1959 as a Boy Entrant age 15. and served for 38 years and was demobbed in September 1997. I have lived in Yorkshire for 25 years since 1995, not saying where ( to easy if I did). I worked as an electrician until retiring in 2009. I joined Freemasonry on the 12th Dec 1978 as a Scottish Mason, joining UGLE in 1996. I have been happily married for nearly 48 years, and have 2 children. I will be easily identified by one of the Brethren, who I hope will not let the cat out of the bag. Who am I???

E Joined a Legal publisher working in the bookshop. Area manager at 24.

6yrs a DJ on local radio. Got married and moved to York, have 3 children and spent nearly a decade as a criminal defence lawyer then financial advisor. Appeared on the TV show " Sports Anorak of the Year" with specialist subject of the Dallas Cowboys. Love golf but dont play. Has represented the UK AT 2016 WORLD CHAMPION-SHIP. ( Not saying what as it would give it away)

Late News from the Province...... Mark my Words

On the 27th May, Cleveland Mark Lodge 1040 held their first virtual meeting via Zoom. In total 13 brethren attended, including our Dep. PGM, VW.Bro Clive Copley attending from Province. The meeting was arranged by Bro Phill Dale and organised as a team with the secretary and WM. The meeting was chair by the Worshipful Master W.Bro Eddy Mett, the Brethren heard updates from the Secretary, Almoner, Treasurer and on this occasion a Provincial update from VW.Bro Clive Copley The meeting then followed on with a chance for the Brethren to catch up, it feels like we’ve all been in lockdown for sometime now. The meeting was a success and our next Zoom meeting is scheduled for 24th June. There were some teething issues, namely we were all enjoying ourselves so much we ran out of time on Zoom, lucky the organiser had planned ahead with a follow on meeting, so after a temporary moment to log back in the meeting continued. I’m led to believe our next meeting will have a greater attendance along with another provincial guest. To all lodges please do consider using virtual meetings to keep in touch it so far has been really useful to all Cleveland 1040 members.
