YOUTH/COMMUNITY/COUNCIL – 1st Annual Fun Fishing Day April 29, 2018: Shortly after joining our Council this January, Brother Luis Garcia proposed holding a fishing event where Brothers and Adult Sponsors could teach youngsters the joy of fishing. Our Youth Director, Brother Joaquin Silva, enthusiastically accepted the idea. Luis and Joaquin formed a working group to plan the event and, with the help of many Knights and Ladies, we held a successful 1st Annual Fun Fishing Day on Sunday April 27th at the NMSU Alumni Pond. The event was co-sponsored by St. Genevieve Knights of Columbus Council 13969, NM Game & Fish, NMSU American Fisheries Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters. There were about 70 youngsters who registered, each accompanied by an adult supervisor. Many of our Knights who are experienced fishermen were there to help the youngsters. We grilled hot dogs and offered everyone a free lunch. Local merchants contributed over $800 in cash and prizes to award the youngsters. All in attendence had a good time. The fishing was not as good as hoped for…you can’t force the trout to bite. However, a fair number of perch were caught, and the youngsters were thrilled. Some of them caught their first fish that day! It was a day to be proud of, for the community and for our council!

We set up our canopies at the NMSU We had a large crowd. About 70 youngsters Grand Knight Jaime Flores talked to Alumni Pond early Sunday morning signed in…each had an adult sponsor many of the youngsters signing in

FAMILY UNITY NIGHT - Weds May 16 Presentation to St. Vincent de Paul Society We invited the St. Genevieve St. Vincent de Paul Society to join us for our potluck dinner at this month’s Family Unity Night. Our council elected this year to donate the 50% profit from the Knights of Columbus NM State Raffle to this worthy charity. We partnered with the St. Vincent de Paul volunteers to sell the raffle tickets. Together, we sold 680 tickets at $5 per ticket for a net profit of $1700. After dinner, Grand Knight Jaime Flores presents the St. Vincent de Paul representatives with a check for $1700…an achievement to be proud of. As usual, we had a good turnout for our monthly potluck. Memorial Day Ceremony Monday May 28th Memorial Day is always special in Las Cruces. This year there was a Flag Raising in the morning and a Candle Light Ceremony in the evening; both events were held at Veterans Memorial Park. Morning Flag Raising – At 8AM Monday, veterans and volunteer residents joined to raise the flag in horror of all those who lost their lives from combat. The flag flies at half staff on Memorial Day. There was also a dedication of the Monument of Blue Star Mothers, who lost a son or daughter during a war.

Evening Candle Light Ceremony – At 8PM, Governor Susana Martinez and Mayor Ken Miyagishima took part in the Candle Light Ceremony. The ceremony honors the 203 veterans fron Dona Ana County who were killed in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Enduring Freedom. Council 13969 was represented by Mary Lou Perez, her daughter Oliva Kirpatrick, and Jesus Frietze who took part in placing candles for veterans who died from combat.

Some of the Editor’s Favorite Photos: The first of my favorite photos is our most handsome Knight and his lady Josefina doing the jitterbug at the Mothers Day Dance. Not since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers have we seen such stellar, exciting dancing!

Josefina and Elias Bernal dance up a storm My next favorite is Toni Frietze, looking as lovely as ever, accepting her door prize at the Mothers Day Dance. We are all so happy that she is recovering so well from her kidney transplant.

Toni Frietze wins a door prize My final favorite is one taken of these old salts at the Fun Fishing Day. They spent the entire day helping lots of young people learn to fish. They patiently told them which bait to use, how to bait their hooks, how to cast, and many other secret tricks. We are indeed lucky to have Brothers like them.
