Newsletter June 2019 1 Newsletter July 2019 June 2019: Monthly meeting Alfa Romeo GTAM Replica evening Trevor Tuck Well guys this was an evening to remember seeing this car in the metal and hearing what has gone into making this car what it is just something special, what an inspiration. 42 days from the time it left the panel shop to the time it arrived at the hill climb takes some doing. And to top it all it won the Knysna Hill climb Historic section first time out. This is the third time that Trevor has won the historic section in a row and in three different Alfa’s. It is also his quickest time up the hill if memory serves me correct. What makes this car unique as a replica is the fact that the car is a left hand drive body also making the build a bit more difficult. All the wiring and most of the work done on the vehicle including building a very unique twin spark engine was all done by Trevor himself. Thanks Peter for organising this great event. Thanks Trevor and Lynton for taking the time out of your busy schedule to bring this “bellezza speciale” to the Alfisti. Grazie -Wesley P.O. 7th Peking to Paris - 2019 The Peking to Paris challenge is one of the most gruelling rallies open to any vintage or classic cars built before 1976. It follows the tracks of the original pioneers of 1907. Vehicles are expected to do around 400 to 650 km’s a day so it is essential to do daily maintenance on your car. This year has attracted 120 entries of which the oldest car is yes you guessed it 1907 Contal Motori Tricycle. One of the vehicles entered happens to be a 1975 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 driven by Matteo Crippa and Roberto Crippa. Ï did not know Spider’s liked water so much.

We had a great talk about Alfa’s and I appreciated Peter’s superior knowledge on the subject. We kept in contact via e-mail and Peter would keep me up to date with Alfa news. During March of 2017, one Friday afternoon, I phoned him to get some information on the new Giulia. He told me that if I would come through right then, I will be the first customer to test drive their new red demo Giulia. Needless to say, about an hour later I was driving the new Giulia. It was an experience not comparable to anything else. Back at the garage, I signed for the first available Giulia. I had to secure my order there and then with a deposit. As per normal, I don’t make the mistake of ever informing my wife of any new car purchases. For some strange and totally unknown reason, it has a tendency to upset her. However, I had to share the news of the new Giulia with my son, who told some of his mates, one of which told her mother, which lead to me being confronted by my wife about a month later (still waiting for the Giulia): “Don’t you think there is something you should tell me?” At that moment, nothing specific came to mind. The white Giulia arrived on the 12th of April 2017. What an addition to the family!

On visiting clients down in George during October of 2017, I saw an

advertisement speaking directly to my unfulfilled dream way back from 1982.

A Sapphire Blue Alfa GTV 6. Costa Vakis bought this car from a lady in

Johannesburg, who drove it for more than 30 years. He had the engine

overhauled and converted to 3L capacity (keeping the fuel injection), as well

as some other mechanical stuff done. All by Dawie de Villiers at Glenwood

Motors in Pretoria. I remember driving the car up the Outeniqua Pass, not too

impressed. Unwittingly, I was unfairly comparing it to my brand new Giulia, a

car design of almost half a century later. Seeing my facial expression, Costa

then gave me a stern and valuable lecture on older cars and how to judge and

enjoy them, which really gave me perspective. Two days later I phoned him,

bought the car and he drove it down to Cape Town that very Friday. The car

needed some tidying up, especially in the engine bay area. Georgio at Auto

Azzurri took great care in fixing everything that was not right or up to standard.

I am now in the fortunate position to own a very special GTV6 that is an

absolute pleasure to drive. Good thing it is sporting a CY number plate, so

that the car and I is sort of in perfect character when I put my right foot down

and the racing exhaust bellows the intoxicating sounds from that very sweet

Busso-violin. I understand that not everybody appreciates the noise, but I just

cannot help myself. For some or other strange reason, not all of my

neighbours are still greeting me anymore…

I am fond of open top driving. During early December 2017, Rudi Opperman,

who sold me a new Land Rover Discovery in December of 2006, sent me

pictures of a beautiful red, left hand drive, 1989, Series 3 Spider, which he

had traded in. To my wife’s total surprise, the car arrived in early January

2018, all the way from Johannesburg. After also getting the necessary

treatment from the Maestros at Auto Azzurri, it too became an absolute

The criminals in South Africa are now starting to pick up there taste in get away cars. This

159 was stolen and used in a house break in, in Brenthurst Johannesburg. Unfortunately the

criminals in the 159 hit one of the street beggars at the robot and lost control of the vehicle.

Apparently there are a few fish that are wanting to purchase an Alfa or two so Alfa has opted

for advertising in the big blue ocean.

Did you know Muhammad Ali owned a 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloche Series II and it is

now for sale. This was actually not his first choice. He apparently was shopping for a car for

his wife and landed up with this, it has a genuine 80 000 miles.

Are you a fan of 007 you can now own a piece of movie history Quantum of the Solace the

007 movie black Alfa Romeo 159 is also up for sale with the original movie damage before it

went over the cliff,

TCR AUSTRALIA 2019

Awesome results from Australia when Dylan O’Keeffe qualified 3rd for the grid at

Sydney Motorsport Park. Following this in race one ended up 4th race two 2nd overall

and race three 2nd overall.

The following race was at Phillip Island and a fantastic pole position followed on by

race one brilliant 1st overall. Race two continued the success with another 1st overall.

The only way to beat the opposition take them out of the race and unfortunately race

three was a DNF.

This puts the Giulietta of Dylan in a firm second place in the points Championship

after 6 races.
