English Junior Uphill Championships Sedbergh 16th July 2011

As part of the FRA English Junior Championships, one race is designated as uphill only – a different test for the athletes, designed to see who has the strength to keep going when others around are flagging. Although not part of the Harriers’ own championship, there was still a healthy turnout from the club looking to consolidate their position in the overall English series. The race was held amongst the Howgill fells at Sedbergh, where all the runners faced the daunting prospect of running most or all of the way up Winder, the hill that dominates the skyline of the town. 15 juniors (and their parents) braved the rain clouds and made the trip to pit themselves against some of the best fell runners in the country and once again. Elphina & Soljai Waterman both ran in the U8’s race, with Elphina continuing her recent success finishing 2nd girl. Sunnivah Waterman maintained the family tradition by leading the Holmfirth contingent back in the U10’s race, finishing 7th overall & 2nd girl, just ahead of George & Harry Hobbs. The U12’s race was a stern test for the competitors, having to climb nearly 600 feet in only 1 mile and taking them 2/3rds of the way to the top. Jimmy Burke continues to enjoy the challenge of competing against older athletes and finished 7th overall, followed closely behind by Nicky Farquhar in 11th. Unfortunately, Erica Byram was unable to start the race, but her sister Lucy ran superbly to finish 14th overall & 2nd girl, just ahead of Lewis Bartholomew and Daisy Smith. Lewis Byram has had a great 12 months, winning not only a number of fell races, but triathlons and cross country events as well. He can now add the title of English Junior U14 Uphill Champion to that list. In a race that climbed some 800 feet in 1.25 miles, he destroyed the opposition, winning by over 20 seconds in a time of 12.18 – a great achievement against athletes from clubs as far flung as Glasgow, Middlesbrough and Scarborough. Seth Waterman, last year’s U12 champion, is also running well in his first year in this age group & finished 8th overall in 13.59. Eddie Hinchliffe & Andrew Farquhar completed the team, finishing 19th & 25th respectively. The team prizes based on the best 3 results for both boys & girls from the U12’s upwards, with local club & race hosts Helm Hill taking the top prize narrowly from Blackburn Harriers. Happily, the journey was worthwhile for Holmfirth, as the team of Lewis Byram, Seth Waterman, Jimmy Burke, Lucy Byram & Daisy Smith finished 3rd and proudly collected their medals from Rob Jebb of Bingley Harriers, a GB & England international & one of the top fell runners in the country. July is always a busy month for racing, with some 80 events on the FRA calendar and there has been a healthy Holmfirth representation from seniors & juniors alike. For the juniors, the main event was the English Uphill Championship, part of the overall English championships and this year held at Sedbergh. For the seniors, it was just the small matter of the 24th running of the Holme Moss race, the next counter in the club’s own championship. From an entry of 120, 112 hardy souls completed the gruelling course in challenging conditions. Of the 18 Holmfirth finishers, best placed was Helen Berry, who finished a magnificent 16th overall and more importantly, 1st lady! Other notable performances for the ladies were Maggie Sykes, 64th overall, 3rd lady & 2nd F40 and Karen Sinkinson, 70th overall, 4th lady & 1st F50 – those 3 also picked up the ladies team prize. For the men, John Ewart was 2nd V55 & Rob Kersey was 1st V60. The final weekend also saw the latest round of the English Championships at Whittle Pike near Rossendale. A very select trio made the trip and were very pleased they had! Katie Walshaw maintained her stunning form of 2011 by winning the race having led from start to finish, followed closely behind by Helen Berry who was 4th overall. Andy Hauser was our other representative and finished a creditable 5th V55 on what he would definitely consider to be not his sort of course at all! Following on from last month’s report, congratulations to Katie who ran for England at the International Snowden race on 23rd July and finished 7th lady & 2nd English counter, helping the England team to the silver medal. Next up for the juniors is the Yorkshire Junior Championships at Hellifield on Saturday 6th August and for the seniors, another local race organised by Russell Bangham, the Denis Stitt race on Thursday 18th August from Cartworth Moor CC. Finally, other results of note in the last month are as follows:

Skiddaw (03/07/11) – Andy Hauser, 5th overall & 1st V50; Wasdale (09/07/11) – Tom Brunt, 9th overall;

Heptonstall Festival (09/07/11) – Katie Walshaw, 7th overall & 1st lady; Stirton (13/07/11) – Lucy Needham, 57th overall & 3rd lady;

Oxenhope (16/07/11) – Lucy Needham, 14th overall & 1st lady; Kentmere (17/07/11) – Bill Stewart, 9th overall;

Wormstones (27/07/11) – Karen Sinkinson, 45th overall & 1st F50; Rydal Round (28/07/11) – Bill Stewart, 6th overall.

A very rewarding season for both competitors and spectators alike with many exciting events and no shortage of talent. Thanks to the league organisers and all the officials who also turn out in extreme conditions

Aviva English Schools 81st Track and Field Championships

From left to right: Luke Craven, Jordan Toth, Jacob Henton, Max Kaye Four athletes from Holmfirth Harriers AC represented West Yorkshire Schools in the Aviva English Schools Track & Field Championships held at Gateshead International Stadium on the 1st and 2nd of July. The English Schools has over 2000 athletes competing in an event where many of the greats of British Athletics had their first taste of high class competition. Jordan Toth was amongst the favourites for the Senior Boys 100m title. He won his heat on Friday morning in 10.89secs and qualified for the final by clocking 10.83secs in the semi final later in the day. The final was held at 1600hours on Saturday afternoon and Jordan led from start to finish taking the title in 10.71secs from Ben Shields of South Yorkshire in 10.84secs. This was an excellent effort and is a reward for all the hard work he has put in this last year. Max Kaye was in action in the Senior Boys 1500m and qualified for the final by placing 3rd in his heat in 3mins 57.16secs. In the final Max faced a group of very talented athletes who between them have recorded the best times seen at 1500m for this age group for the last ten years. The first two laps were very slow with the race only taking off over the last 700m. Max just missed the leading four breaking away at the bell, but ran a 56sec last lap to take an excellent 5th place in 3mins 57.09secs. The race was won by Charlie Grice of Sussex in 3mins 53.70secs from Cameron Boyek of Durham in 3mins 54.32secs and Richard Charles of Middlesex in 3mins 54.53secs. Jacob Henton and Luke Craven, both mainstays of the Harriers Northern Track & Field team were in action in the Intermediate Boys age group. Jacob placed 7th in the 400m in 52.5secs with Luke finishing 17th in the final of the Triple jump recording 12.17m. Both boys did well competing at this high level which is often seen as the ‘School Olympics’ and will benefit from the experience when they reach the Senior Boys age group next year.

YVAA Grand Prix

Holmfirth Harriers hosted the latest round in the YVAA multi-terrain Grand Prix series. On a beautiful but very warm day 215 Veteran runners (35 – 80+) from 25 clubs turned out to race the testing 6 mile course from Neiley to Thurstonland then Farnley Tyas and back to Neiley. The route took in woodland, fields and tracks with only very short stretches of road and involved 284m of climb. Over 30 Harriers helped on the day marshalling, acting as finish recorders, catering and setting out and clearing the course and our thanks go to them as without them there would be no race. (right Dave Watson near the finish) Holmfirth had 1st finisher in both the men’s and women’s race in Dave Watson (M40) and Helen Berry (F35) and won prizes in several other categories - John Ewart, 1st M55; Jacqui Khoueiry 2nd F35; Rob Kersey 1st M60; Margaret Sykes 2nd F40; Lesley Ewart 1st F55; Yvette Arthur 2nd F50. Full results can be found on the Vets Pages on the website. The previous Tuesday a small contingent of Holmfirth Vets travelled over to Meanwood for the event hosted by Valley Striders. Dave Watson was again 1st and was followed by Jonathan Sykes 18th, M45; Gary Graham 25th, M45; David Roberts 40th, M45; Rob Kersey 43rd, 2nd M60; Jacqui Khoueiry 59th, 1st F35; Margaret Sykes 61st 2nd F40; Rosemary Baker 114th, 2nd F50; Bill wade 145th, 3rd M70; Tim Cock 154th, 3rd M65; Simon Edwards 186th, M35. This race had a record entry for a YVAA GP event of 252 runners.

Races coming up… Tuesday August 23rd Bingley Grand Prix A new race so no idea of course as yet but will be the usual 5-6 mile distance mainly off road. Sunday 11th September YVAA Road Relays This is a new venue for this very enjoyable event and is on a mainly flat course. Each leg is 2.9 miles and I would like to put at least one team out in all the age groups. No doubt some of you may be involved in the Yorkshire RR which unfortunately falls the day before the YVAA event but at 2.9 miles I’m sure you can all manage both! Please email me or sign up on the board at the club or even talk to me at the desk on a club night. It is useful to know if you can’t run as well as if you can as it will save me time on the usual 50+ phone calls I usually have to make to get teams out. Saturday 1st October Northern and YVAA CC Relays This is another excellent event and not far away in Graves Park, Sheffield. Again we would like to get teams out in all categories if possible so again please make yourself available for this race if you can, each leg only 2 miles.

Holmfirth Tri 10th July

Sunday 10 July was the date of the 2nd Holmfirth Harriers Junior Triathlon. With 107 athletes expectations were high that it would be a good day including 41 Holmfirth Harrier athletes entered in this race.

First up was the Tristart age category. Elphina Waterman was 1st and made it a clean sweep by winning all of her races this summer; she was closely followed by the improving Ruby Yates in 2nd and another consistent finish by Kate Dickinson in 3rd. Sophie Kettlewell of Holmfirth also had a great race in 6th place. In the boys category, there was a tussle between Charlie Cross of Holmfirth and a Wakefield Tri athlete. Charlie has been in great form in his first year of Triathlon’s winning several races. Charlie had a super race once again and finished in 2nd place.

In the Tristar 1 girls, Sunnivah Waterman finished where her sister left off by winning the race by some margin – another clean sweep of race victories., Millie Yates who actually missed her original start wave had a great race to finish in 4th, with the improving Holly Bailey Taylor in 7th and Lia Carter and Jennifer Melia in 9th and 11th respectively. The boys Tristar 1 was another interesting race with several late entries by athletes attempting to win the Regional series. Holmfirth Harriers were once again well represented and there was a battle throughout the race for the top 4 positions with 2 Harriers involved. An improved performance by Finn Kerry saw him finish in 3rd place, seconds ahead of Arron Smith, with Daniel Howatson in 5th, Thomas Ford in 10th and Dominic Drake in 13th position.

In the girls Tristar2 category with just seconds separating the top 3 with Lucy Byram needing a win over her sister and fell Y&H athlete Emma Clapton. Lucy did what was needed and had a superb race to finish 1st followed by Emma 2nd and sister Erica who had already secured the regional title took 3rd. Libby Shepherd in her first year in this age group continued to impress with 7th place, Maegan Jones 8th, Daisy Hinchliffe Smith 13th, Isobel Drake in 16th and Emmy Bailey Taylor in 17th all enjoyed themselves in a great race. The boys of Holmfirth were once again well represented. On this occasion it was Lewis Bartholomew in his first Triathlon season who headed the Holmfirth boys, with a fine race in 4th place. Tiras Waterman and Nicky Farquhar in 5th and 6th respectively were also in fine form. Jack Ford in 10th place had his customary strong bike leg, with Jake Smith, Thomas Giles and Joel Page in 12, 13th and 14th places.

Next up were the Tristar 3 girls, only Lucy Farquhar was racing for Holmfirth in this category and after a great start on the swim leg, she was pinned back by other athletes on the bike and run, to finish in 4th place. This was enough for a delighted Lucy to win the Regional Series overall and qualify for the inter counties representing Y&H.

The most eagerly anticipated race of the day was the boys Tristar 3, with 9 athletes out of 14, hopes were high, especially as Lewis Byram of Holmfirth and Joshua Schofield of Tri York were once again set to continue their summer long battle. Seth Waterman was first out of the water, but after a

quick transition Josh and Lewis were soon behind. A great swim by Isaac Shepherd and Eddie Hinchliffe saw these Holmfirth boys soon on the bike course. It was Lewis who set the pace on the run and with a strong kick for home there was no answer from the York athlete and a jubilant Lewis was cheered home by an enthusiastic crowd. Seth Waterman finished in 3rd place as the next race between Isaac and Andrew Farquhar entertained the crowd. Isaac had the upper hand to finish in 4th place, a great result for Isaac after a disappointing start to the series back in May. He improved with each race and was understandably delighted with his performance. With Andrew in 5th place, Ben Dickinson in 6th and Eddie Hinchliffe in 7th place, Holmfirth Harriers dominated the top positions. Joe Williams had a fall early on the bike leg and managed a brave finish in 9th place, with Shea Kerry and Luke Page in 12th and 14th places. A smaller field of Youth athletes saw a 3rd place finish by Sophie Williams and a strong 1st place for Robert Hinchliffe in the youth boys. For Robert this was a great result in his first Triathlon season. These results helped the following athletes to Podium finishes in the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Series, with the Tristar2 and Tristar 3 athletes representing the county at the Inter Regional Championships in September. A National title that Yorkshire & Humberside have won for the last 2 years.

Tristart Girls: 1st Elphina Waterman, 2nd Ruby Yates

Tristart Boys: 1st Charlie Cross

Tristar1 Girls: 1st Sunnivah Waterman

Tristar2 Girls: 1st Erica Byram, 2nd Lucy Byram

Tristar3 Girls: 1st Lucy Farquhar

Tristar 3 Boys: 2nd Lewis Byram, 3rd Seth Waterman Holmfirth Harriers would like to thank all of the Parents and Helpers who helped make this a terrific event. Thank you for the donations of cakes, buns and raffle prizes, especially to The Cyclery, Upper Mill Saddleworth for the star prize of a cycle helmet for the raffle and in particular to Yorkshire Building Society who as Main Sponsors helped ensure this event could be held.

The event was held at the superb Heywood Village Sports Complex, and is organised by Rochdale Tri. As usual it was the Tristart age group who were first which was largely dominated by the two Holmfirth Harriers girls who entered. A mere 2 seconds separated Sophie Kettlewell and Ruby Yates out of the water and it remained close for most of the run, however, on this occasion Sophie was just that little bit faster to lead home a great 1st and 2nd for Holmfirth. A similar story emerged in the Tristar1 race as Finn Kerry and Aaron Smith set the pace for the boys, in the pool closely followed by Daniel Howatson. Jennifer Melia in her first Aquathlon, was also highly placed with Millie Yates, close behind in the girls race Finn Kerry and Arron Smith were the first boys onto the run course, a 2 lap route of 1500m, It was on the 2nd lap that a determined Finn started to pull away from Aaron and led home in first place, Aaron closely followed in 2nd. Meanwhile Daniel Howatson was pushing himself in a battle for 3rd place, unfortunately slipping on an incline which cost him a podium finish, but nevertheless a creditable 4th place. Millie Yates had to pull out through injury, leaving Jennifer Melia to an excellent 5th place in a competitive field. In the Tristar2 race it was another close competition. Lily Barr had a great race to finish in 4th overall, closely followed by Amy Kettlewell in 5th place and Isobel Drake in 6th place. These girls are relative novice Triathletes and showed how they have improved over the summer. In the boys race it was down to Joel Page as the sole representative for Holmfirth Harriers and he didn’t disappoint. Joel set a new PB in the pool to exit the boys race in the lead, unfortunately he failed to hold on over the run, but came in his highest ever placing in a brilliant 2nd place. In the final race of the day Luke Page emulated his brother and set a blistering pace in the water, followed by Aaron Kettlewell and Shea Kerry in the Tristart 3 category. Aaron settled into a great rhythm and started to pull places back with a terrific 3rd place overall, Shea managed to catch Luke and lost out to 4th place in a sprint finish, with Luke holding on to a creditable 8th place.

A new adventure for Sharky! The day after his disappointment at the Canary Wharf Sprint Triathlon, Mark headed off to Milan en route to St Moritz to join the Brownlee’s Altitude Training Camp. Incidentally the apparent discrepancy in his finish position at Canary Wharf was due to him not placing his helmet in the box provided, which resulted in a time penalty and demotion from his actual finish placing! The training camp proved a huge success. Shortly after he returned from St Moritz he had some physiological tests, which revealed an 8.5% increase in his haemoglobin level, which was better than expected. Whilst in Switzerland, Mark went to Paris where he raced for his French Grand Prix team, Mulhouse but was disappointed with his 59th placing. At the end of his trip, he raced over the Olympic distance in a European Cup race in Geneva and despite this been shortly after a heavy training load, he had his best finish to date 8th place. Sadly the week after his return from Switzerland he did the London Triathlon, the final race of the super series and finished in 11th place. This was the venue of his first ever triathlon 51 weeks earlier and although his time was 8 minutes 37 seconds quicker and his swim almost 2 minutes quicker, that was the area that let him down, resulting in missing the lead bike group by 7 seconds and having to work extremely hard for 15km alone before a chase group caught him. The guy that finished 4 places behind him in Geneva, Ritchie Nicholls of Scotland, made the lead bike group in London and won the race together with $15,000! The St Moritz training camp in his words was “awesome” and there is no doubt in his mind why Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee are the top triathletes in the World. Mark coped well with all the training and he worked really hard ensuring he kept with the strong swimmers, demonstrating his prowess on the bike and towards the end of the camp he was the last man standing with Alistair on a track session in atrocious weather. During the three week period he spent a few mornings eating his porridge outside in the sunshine admiring the snow-capped peaks, but this wasn’t a holiday, it was an intense training camp that he felt privileged to be a member. His sponsor, Barrie Wells, joined the guys during the camp and treated Mark, Ali and Jonny to dinner at an exclusive restaurant one evening and picked up the tab fortunately! Mark has recently changed coaches in Loughborough and he is now working with Mark Pearce and he has been told he will be part of the World Class Development Squad and therefore funded for the next 12 months, which is a relief after a very busy 10 month period.
