Dear Parents/Guardians, Friends and Students of SAC,

You may have noticed some media attention recently questioning whether Year 7 students in South Australia are being adequately funded in our schools. Regardless of whether Year 7 students are in R to 12 or R to 7 schools, and regardless of sector, South Australia is not in line with other states and territories where Year 7 students are funded at the same rate as Secondary students. The Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities is calling on state Education Minister, Susan Close, to address the inequity that exists given that Year 7 students in South Australia are addressing a national curriculum and being assessed through NAPLAN, so community expectation is of outcomes consistent with the national standard. We are keen to hear the government’s response to this issue.

Our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be sitting the NAPLAN tests next week. Our teachers work hard to ensure that the students go into the tests with a sense of confidence about what to expect and understand that the result is just one piece of assessment information amidst the rich tapestry used by teachers to assess each student’s progress.

For the first time, we are using an online booking system for our upcoming Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews , which begin on Monday 11 May. The system has been quickly embraced by students, parents/carers and staff. The accessibility of the system will hopefully make it easier for families to schedule times efficiently. We are open to your feedback and look forward to seeing you at the interviews next week.

The Years 5-12 Student Representatives met with the Leadership Team today to analyse the results of the student survey, completed in Term 4 last year. At that time, students responded to questions across five key dimensions of our school, so they were keen to see which areas had been identified as strengths and challenges by the student body as a whole. The wisdom and insights young people show in considering feedback is always inspiring and there is no doubt that their constant desire for improvement will benefit current and future students. I look forward to working with these student leaders to identify and prioritise the key ideas from the survey. I am also keen to engage with parents/carers to analyse survey responses in the near future.

Mother’s Day this Sunday has been the source of great excitement and creativity for many of our students this week, especially in the early years. Gifts and cards have been prepared with great love. It is an opportunity to celebrate the mothers and other women who play an important role in shaping our students’ lives. I am reminded of one of the prayers of the Sisters of Mercy:

We thank you, God, for all the women in our families and community who have been strong role models for us. May our memories of them fill us with joy and sustain us as we make our journey to you.

Happy Mother’s Day!

• R-7 students are eligible for a $50 voucher. • Any Primary student can receive a $50

reduction in sport fees (for approved sports).• You generally provide your Medicare number as

part of the registration process.

The NAPLAN tests will be taking place for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 on Tuesday 12 May, Wednesday 13 May and Thursday 14 May 2015. The NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) tests are a nationally developed program. They are administered simultaneously in all schools across Australia. The tests will begin at 9:00am on each day and will take place in classrooms. It is important that students arrive on time on these days so that they can commence the tests with the rest of the class. If you have any queries about the NAPLAN tests please speak with your daughter’s home class teacher or myself.

South Australian Catholic school parents hold a diverse range of views on the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and the national testing carried out each year across Australia for children in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The Federation has written a resource, which you can find in the link below, designed to answer a number of questions commonly asked by parents about the purpose and scope of NAPLAN. To see this, please access:

SAC CHINA STUDY TOUR 2015

On Wednesday 8 April 2015, fourteen girls aged fourteen to sixteen, accompanied by two inspirational teachers, began their life changing journey to China for a study tour. The first stop was Beijing where the girls visited the iconic Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, enjoyed a Kung Fu show and experienced bargaining at the Silk Road. After three days filled with fun and excitement the girls took the evening train to their next stop, Xi’an!

After arriving in Xi’an, the girls saw the Ancient City Wall, the Small Goose Pagoda, the music water fountain, terracotta warriors and horses and also experienced karaoke. The two days in Xi’an were also dedicated to being a part of St Aloysius College’s sister school Xi’an Gao Xin Di Yi Zhong Xue where the girls were involved in everyday school life in China and experienced cultural activities. They also tried different varieties of Chinese food including different types of noodles, hotpot and eighteen types of dumplings!

The last stop was Shanghai. The girls went to Nanjing Road, Huangpu River, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, the Bund and enjoyed a spectacular acrobatic show. As the journey concluded, everyone caught the Maglev Train to Shanghai airport to go back home, arriving safely in Adelaide on Sunday 19 April 2015.

Setting foot in China was an exhausting but extremely exciting experience. Being able to meet the engaging tour guides who were overflowing with knowledge of their beloved city was fascinating. The tour guides Jerry, Eric and Andy were able to teach everyone something about the places visited and also about cultural and historical backgrounds.

A highlight of the journey was bargaining! The girls learnt phrases like “Tài guile” (too expensive) and “Piányí yīdian” (cheaper). They were able to communicate with people and get cheap goods!

While travelling around the cities of China they saw the love that Chinese people had for food. Chinese people didn’t just have a food store around every corner. Unlike western culture where there is a set meal for each individual, all the food was to be shared in the middle of the table with everyone.

Being able to travel with two knowledgeable, caring and inspiring teachers was one of the highlights of the trip. They took on the roles

A Life Changing Journey! of mothers where they brought everyone together as a family. They taught the group so many things and created so many memorable experiences.

This study tour was more than what we could ask for. We got to experience so much within the eleven days and learnt so much too. We also formed great relationships with each other. Being able to take part in the China Study Tour was one of the best choices in our school lives. We are “Fēicháng ganxiè” (extremely thankful) to everyone who made it possible and we would recommend it to all the students who study Chinese.

SAC CHINA STUDY TOUR 2015

When we were first introduced to the China Study Tour we never anticipated the outcome of this amazing eleven day trip. We initially made the decision to join the China Study Tour as a result of our long time aspiration to visit China one day. We also thought it would be a great opportunity to apply our acquired knowledge of the Chinese language in a country where the majority of the population speaks Mandarin.

On Wednesday 8 April 2015 our group of fourteen students and two teachers embarked on a journey which turned out to be one of the most remarkable experiences of our lives. As we journeyed through Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai we witnessed and experienced for ourselves the Chinese culture in its natural territory. Despite the short length of this trip, we were able to experience both China’s modern and ancient culture through associating with people and visiting iconic sites.

Visiting China enabled us to see this country beyond its stereotypes and improved our Chinese speaking skills. We developed a further understanding of China’s rich history through visiting historical landmarks. One thing which surprised us was the portrayal of women in the early stages of China’s history. We learnt that uneducated women were seen as elegant and this provoked our feminist beliefs on the importance of educating women. We were also surprised at how education is taken very seriously in China. The fact that students spend up to twelve hours a day in a classroom taught us how much we take our flexible school schedule for granted. We were also fascinated that the students have no choice in which subjects they study, which contrasts with the western education system. Furthermore, the western influence on China was highly apparent in the towering skyscrapers and western brand names which were dominant throughout the three cities we visited. In particular, the level of fluency in the English language by the majority of the Chinese people we met made us realise the extent western countries have shaped this country.

This trip also offered us an opportunity to develop our independence and inspired us to incorporate what we experienced to shape our future. We were inspired to continue with our Chinese studies which we believe will be an advantage as China and Australia’s relationship develops. Above all, we were inspired by the western teachers at Xi’an Gaoxin Number One High School who challenged us to one day take our careers one step further to China and experience for ourselves what it would be like to work in such a unique country.

ART NEWSPractical Workshops at the Art Gallery of South Australia

During Term 1, three groups of students from senior Art and Design had the wonderful opportunity to attend practical workshops at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The workshops were about fashion illustration, life drawing and self portrait drawing. Each workshop was run by a practicing artist and students had the opportunity to study art works, learn practical techniques and produce a final art work. Some of these finished pieces may be chosen to be exhibited at the annual SALA Secondary Students Drawing Exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The eighteen students who participated in these workshops enthusiastically tackled the challenging techniques and produced an array of beautiful drawings.

On Monday 16 March, three students from Year 11 Design studies and two Year 12 students attended a fashion illustration workshop at the Art Gallery of South Australia. South Australian artist Sue Ninham conducted this workshop along with Ryan Sims, the gallery’s Education Officer. Sue introduced us to some of her works and emphasised the fact that fashion illustrations are about the clothing and not the details of the figure or face. I enjoyed drawing a fashion illustration using three lines, two lines and a singular line. The final artwork was definitely challenging for me as I used mixed media to create the illustration and, ultimately, it was too ‘stiff’ so I learnt that I needed to put more texture and emphasis on the form of the clothing. I really enjoyed this workshop and Sue was a pleasant and very effective teacher. I think the knowledge I developed in terms of the different ways in which to use media will be very helpful in future endeavours with Art and Design. Phoebe Wallace-Mitrovic 11AB

On Wednesday 18 March we attended a life drawing workshop with artist Renate Nisi. We learnt how to use charcoal and the different ways to approach drawing a male figure. It was confronting at first and challenging to capture proportions and tone. Through this workshop we have been inspired to continue practising our skills and experiment with more techniques. Serena Dunbar 11AB, Grace Sajn 11AB, Nikki Alexopoulos 11FD, Jade Shepherdson 11AB & Isabella Carapetis 11AB

On Thursday 19 March, six St Aloysius students attended a self portrait art workshop with artist Deidre But-Hussein. Upon arrival we had our photos taken and they were the photographs we worked with in the workshop. The only tools we were allowed to use were charcoal of various thicknesses, an eraser and our hands. Throughout the day we were taught about the different techniques and skills used to create self portraits and what we could do to make them look more realistic. Overall, this art workshop was a positive experience where we learnt new techniques to use in the future. Julieanne Swiatczak 10EH

Expressionism in Art

During Term 1 we learnt about ‘Expressionism’ in Art. On Thursday 26 March we made sculptures of clay. These had to reflect an emotion, convey a message or symbolise something special to us. First we made a two-dimensional draft on A3 paper. Then, once we were happy with our designs, we went to the clay room and began moulding our clay into a three-dimensional form. One student created a ribbon wrapped around the earth with a message engraved on it. Another student constructed a bowl of fruit with a message to save food and not waste it. There were many messages of love and friendship such as two people holding hands. It was very interesting to see all the different sculptures and analyse their meanings.

Tara Kruszynski 5NW

Last term, Year 5 classes learnt about ‘Expressionism’ in Art. Expressionism is a style that artists created to express their emotions and feelings. We produced our own artworks and presentations. We had to create an artwork based on what we interpreted from a chosen sound. Another activity was picking an emotion of our choice and taking a photograph of our bodies and faces resembling that feeling, then we painted the background to match our emotion. We also made clay sculptures which expressed a situation or showed a message that was close to our hearts. We also went to the Art Gallery and toured around The Black Rose exhibition by Trent Park. Trent never got to say goodbye to his mother when she passed away and he made the exhibition based on how he felt about this. We learnt how colour and shapes can affect our emotional response to specific artworks.

YEAR 5 CAMP AT MYLOROn Monday 30 March, students in Year 5 went to Mylor for an overnight camp. The two days were filled with friendship and team building activities.

Ms Joanne VillisYEAR 5 HOME CLASS TEACHER

The big swing was fun but it was a bit scary. We had to put on a harness and helmet for safety. Lily Zada-Schwartz 5JVThe raft-making was great. After we made our rafts we had to test it to see if it sunk or floated. Once tested, we had a relay race. Elke Milne 5NWThere was a flying fox. It was scary, which made it fun (unlike most flying foxes). It felt insecure because the rope we had the option to hold was slippery. However, we knew it was secure as we had safety harnesses on and we were told that the flying fox could hold the same weight as two regular cars and even two oversized trucks! Mia Konopka 5JVThe ‘challenge course’ was full of team building challenges. Everyone took part and pulled up a flag on a pole. At the end, everyone was wet but it was all worth it - it was so much fun! Cruz Choe 5JAStudents slept in dorms which had their own ensuites. We snuggled in our sleeping bags to get warm. Every dorm was given a job like vacuuming or packing up after eating dinner. Our dorm door numbers went from 2-11 and the teachers got the biggest dorms which were dorms 1 and 14-15. Alisha Nair 5JAThere was a rock wall activity which had supports that helped us move around. The second part of this activity was to play a game called ‘Twister’- it was quite hard to play! Ariana Ravell 5NWWe’d like to thank Ms Wright for organising our camp and Ms Auld, Ms Villis, Ms McLaughlin, Ms Brunetti, Ms Nuske and Ms Wright for making our camp sensational. We can’t forget Ms Potter who received a phone call early on Monday morning to join us at short notice! It was an awesome camp! 5JA, 5NW & 5JV students

YEAR 6 EXCURSION TO THE MIGRATION MUSEUM

The Year 6 classes had an exciting start to Term 2 by attending Unpacking Histories, a program run by the Migration Museum. As we are studying Australian Migration in Humanities & Social Sciences it seemed fitting that we attended this workshop where the girls became historians for two hours. Upon arrival, the girls were presented with six different suitcases containing the precious belongings of migrants who came to South Australia in the 20th and 21st centuries.Working like historians, they used primary and secondary resources to research, sequence, analyse and record the lives of several South Australians and their immigration stories. The excursion was exciting and informative and the girls left the museum eager to learn more about migration in Australia. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who walked with our classes and assisted us on the day.

SAC SWIMMING AND ATHLETICS STARS!Last term, St Aloysius College participated in two interschool swimming events and in the Catholic School Girls Athletics Carnival. In both swimming and athletics categories we competed in the A Grade competitions. The swimming teams participated in the South Australian Secondary Schools Association Carnival (SASSA), a tough competition as participants were the top swimmers of the state. In this competition we finished seventh out of ten schools - a very respectable position. The team as a whole performed very well with standout individual performances by Emma-Lee Arnold 9NR, Eve Caton 10PA, Charlotte-Rose Connor 8SB and Emily Tyler 9NW. The second swimming carnival was the Catholics School Girls Carnival (SACSSGSA). This was a highlight for our team and again we were up against some top competitors. In the races, the majority of our team was placed between first and fourth and we had standout performances from our Junior team: Emma-Lee Arnold placed first in U15 Div 1 backstroke, U15 Div 1 breaststroke and U15 Div 1 freestyle; Eve Caton placed first in U15 Div 2 backstroke, U15 Div 1 breaststroke, U16 Div 1 freestyle and second in 100m freestyle. Emily Tyler also competed in six events and received two firsts, one second, two thirds and a fourth - a great effort! Also, our U15 relay team dominated and won in a record breaking time! They also won the U15 division trophy which was fantastic! Unfortunately, we fell nine points short and came second against St Ignatius College, but with our Junior team being so strong we look forward to next year and we’ll try to get that win!On Holy Thursday the athletics team competed in the SACSSGSA Carnival. The students were chosen to compete following their excellent results from our own SAC Athletics Carnival from the previous year. Our team of 42 students tried their hardest with many of them winning first, second and third place. Our Junior sprinters Michelle Ogunniyi 9NR, Swanika Ramkumar 8KM and Andrea Stefanopoulos 8SB performed exceptionally well, as did our long distance runners Chelsea Holmes and Meredith Norman 9NR. Overall, our team finished fifth and there were some promising signs for the SAC athletics team!Thank you to all students who participated in these carnivals and to all teachers, especially Ms Vashti Casserly, Ms Katie Fenoughty, Ms Elizabeth Roussos, Ms Rosie Hicks and Ms Sarah Eaton for being officials at these events.
