Because of his narrower build, he is the ideal size for students who cannot easily sit astride the larger horses. Measuring only 48 inches tall at his withers, he is also less intimidating than the larger horses. The volunteers love him, as it is much easier on the arms to side walk with a 48 inch pony! HETRA’s First Golf Tournament

On October 26 - 29 HETRA hosted a

Level I American Hippotherapy Association Workshop. A special thank you goes out to the local Cargill Cares Council who awarded HETRA a grant to fund this workshop. Cargill Cares Councils are employee-led groups that implement strategic community involvement activities in their local communities. Due to Cargill Cares six of HETRA’s therapists were able to attend the workshop. Workshops, such as this one, provide valuable continuing education to HETRA’s staff and therapists which enables HETRA to continue to provide the highest quality of care possible to the very special students.

Omaha. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day, and the golfers had a great time! Lee Terry, Sr., one of the golfers, made a Hole in One! Callaway Representative, Andrew Frakes, was on site to drive a shot for guests (all funds going to HETRA). The Omaha Mounted Patrol brought their horses out and sent the golfers off in style! Special thanks to Doug Whitaker and Ben Wormington for their assistance in coordinating the event. HETRA raised just over $4,000, and all funds went towards sponsoring one of the HETRA horse’s, who work in the Equine Services for Heroes program. A special thank you to the following sponsors: Event Sponsor: Renaissance Financial. Hole Sponsors: PayPal, Decatur Construction, Inc., VFW Riders, Nebraska Soldier Foundation, Sid Dillon Chevrolet- Blair, Inc, Safari Cigars & Lounge, Jakes Cigars, Hal Daub, HETRA Staff.

HETRA Hosts PATH, Intl. Region 7 Conference

September 26-29, 2013, HETRA hosted the Region 7

Annual Conference at the Valley facility and the ITT

Conference Center near Westroads. Therapeutic riding

instructors and volunteers from five states attended the

educational seminars and demonstrations presented by

leaders in different fields. In addition to the

instructional material, the conference gave everyone an

opportunity to network with other mid-westerners in

the profession. Local professional presenters

includedDr. Jeff Snell and Jon Pearson from Quality

Living, Inc., and Tami Burkey from the Lincoln VA. HETRA Farrier, Ian Bevington,

discusses the anatomy of the hoof with attendees.

Respite funding available for HETRA caregivers!

The word “respite” floats around a lot in day to day conversation, especially amongst individuals caring for a loved

one with special needs, but do you know what it means? According to the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center, respite is “planned or emergency care provided to a child or adult with special needs in order to provide temporary relief to family caregivers who are caring for that child or adult.” Respite takes on many forms – a respite break could free up 30 minutes a day to take a nap, could involve having someone take your child on a community outing while you remain at home, or could mean having a respite provider stay with your child overnight for a weekend or week-long vacation. The most important thing about respite is that it helps families enrich their lives together. As a parent or guardian of a child with special needs, following the steps below will allow you to utilize respite in a way that makes you and your family feel comfortable.

“ABC….”

“A” stands for accepting that caring for an individual with a disability can sometimes be challenging and overwhelming, and allowing yourself to take a break. You are doing the best you can to provide care for a loved one with special needs. Sometimes stepping away can be just what you need to renew, refresh and rejuvenate yourself! “B” stands for creating your own bundle of resources to plan for taking time for yourself. Do you have family and/or friends nearby that know about your caregiving situation, and are willing to offer assistance as needed? Does your church have activities for children that would allow you some time off? Have you researched available funding assistance options that would help with costs associated with respite? Create a bundle of information that will assist you in setting aside time for yourself. “C” stands for call the Nebraska Respite Network with questions you might have about respite. They will help you coordinate a plan that is best for you, can send you providers that might be able to assist you in times of need, and have information about why respite is important and how it can help you!

“Easy as 1-2-3…”

Ready for some help? You deserve it! 1 - If you are calling from a land line phone or cell phone with a Nebraska number, call 1-866-RESPITE to be directed to a respite coordinator nearest to you. If you prefer, log on to the DHHS website to learn more about the Nebraska Respite Network and available coordinators at: http://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/hcs_respite-network.aspx. 2 - Funding for respite is available for those that qualify through the Lifespan Respite Subsidy. With this, in-home caregivers can receive up to $125/month to be directed toward respite. Families can choose their own provider or work with a Respite Coordinator who can help them find a provider. 3 – Consider attending a caregiver support group or taking a Powerful Tools for Caregivers class. More information can be found at www.piaging.com. Partial funding to attend a class is available on a first come, first serve basis! Call or e-mail Elizabeth Chentland, Respite Coordinator for Douglas and Sarpy counties, for details: (402) 996-8444 or [email protected].

HETRA Staff Win Awards!

We would like to congratulate the following HETRA staff for their achievements! Edye Godden was awarded the “Caring For Others Award” from Woodmen of the World. Jen Wolsleben won the PATH, Intl. Region 7 Instructor of the Year Award. Jodi Teal received the Cox Classic Golf Tournament Volunteer of the Week Award!
