Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
Lent - Students have been continuing their Lenten fundraising activities and, as always, Miss Keane has organised a
variety of events throughout Lent to support this. Over the next two weeks students will be filling their Smarties
tubes with 20p pieces and last week Year 8 organised the treat day. This week Year 9 are organising their treat day on
Friday and we will continue to collect Easter eggs for disadvantaged children in our local community and the
Foodbank. Years 7 and 8 will soon be taking part in their sponsored Spellathon and Years 9 and 10 are preparing for
their sponsored Maths Feast and all will be looking for sponsors. Please support as generously as you can. Miss Keane
will also be organising another “Big Sleep Out” to raise money for Homeless Charities. This will be on our school site
on Friday 10 May. And further details to follow next week
Whole School Photograph - We plan to have our whole school photograph, weather permitting, on Friday 29
March. We hope that all students will be in school for this exciting event. The last time we had a whole school
photograph was in 2011 and this is a wonderful occasion to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the school
on 3 September 1969.
Year 11 “Information & Takeaway” Evening Reminder - In order to support Year 11 students and their
parents before the GCSE exams start in May, we are holding an “Information & Takeaway” Evening on Wednesday 27
March 2019, 4.00-6.30pm in the Sports Hall. On the evening, parents and students can collect mock exam results, a
summer exam timetable and much more. Year 11 teaching staff will be on hand at subject stands for students and
parents to visit and ask any questions they may have. As well as subject stands, there will stands offering advice on
careers, apprenticeships and much more. We hope that we will see ALL students and parents on Wednesday to en-
sure that our students have the best possible chance of success in the summer exams.
Uniform and Equipment - As parents are aware, we have been focussing on ensuring that students are ready to
learn, have the correct equipment for all lessons and that they are wearing correct school uniform. Students have also
been reminded that chewing gum and caffeine drinks/large bottles of fizzy pop are banned in school.
Over the last week there have been a some issues with mobile phones. Please can I remind parents and students of
our mobile phone policy:
Mobile phones which are brought into school must be turned off and stored out of sight. If a mobile phone is seen by
a member of staff, that member of staff is required to confiscate it immediately.
1st offence - phone is handed into student reception for safe keeping until the end of that day. A text message is
sent to parents.
2nd offence - phone is handed into student reception and placed in the school safe for 3 days A text message is sent
to parents along with a letter outlining the policy.
3rd offence - phone is handed into student reception and placed in the school safe for 1 week and parents need to
come into school and collect the phone. A text message is sent to parents along with a letter outlining the policy.
The full policy can be found on the school website under ‘Parents’ - ‘Policies’ - ‘Mobile Phone Policy’ We appreciate
the support of both students and parents in ensuring that this policy is followed in order to protect our students.
I hope you have a great week, best wishes, Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Year 11 Football Victory
Vs Blue Coat
The Year 11 football team progressed to the quarter finals of
the Coventry Schools Cup with a fantastic performance and
victory against Blue Coat School. The game finished 1-0 after
a goal from Harrison Nee. The performance was full of grit
and determination against a very good Blue Coat team. Very
well deserved and great team effort.
Year 7 Football
Vs Bishop Ullathorne
Year 7 boys bowed out of the West Midlands Cup in the
quarter finals after an end to end battle with Bishop
Ullathorne. Conceding two quick goals put Newman on the
back foot straight away. Kenzie Stretton scored 2 goals (one
from the penalty spot) to make the final score Bishop
Ullathorne 4 - 2 Cardinal Newman.

Year 11 Macbeth Theatre trip – Thursday 28th March 2019
On Thursday 28th March, we are taking 140 Year 11 students to the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham to see an
adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Students will attend Periods 1 and 2 as normal on this day and they will register with teachers for Period 3. They will
then go to their coach meeting location (detailed below) at 11.50am. We are intending to leave school site at approx.
12.15pm as the show begins at 1.30pm.
Texts have been sent about which coaches students are on and this information is also displayed in Lindesfarne block if
any students are unsure. English teachers/tutors will also have circulated this information.
Meeting locations are as follows:
Coach A – Lindesfarne Canteen
Coach B – Canterbury Canteen
Coach C – Pope Francis Hall
Please remind students who are taking part in the trip that they are representing the school at all times during the visit. They should ensure
they are in full school uniform on the day of the trip, that phones are turned off during the performance and that they are respectful and
quiet when in the theatre. Students are encouraged to bring a packed lunch with them to eat before or during the show’s interval.
We aim to arrive back at school at approximately 5.30pm and parents/carers will need to make arrangements with their son/daughter with
regard to how they are getting home at this time.
Please see Miss Grieve if you have any questions or concerns and we hope that students find the performance beneficial for their study of
Macbeth in GCSE English Literature.

Student Successes
It is always wonderful to hear about the
achievements of our students.
Congratulations and well done to the
following students:
Isabella Taplin (9AMI) who competed in the All England Schools Cross Country
Championship in Leeds in very tough conditions last Saturday.

with his choir AC Academy. Archie was part of
a massed choir of 500 children from Coventry
and Solihull and performed Carmina Burana
alongside Armonico Consort’s professional
orchestra and choir.

World Poetry
Day 2019
To celebrate World
Poetry Day on 21
March 2019, Cardinal
Newman focussed on
the theme of
‘Peace and Reconciliation’.
All students at Key Stage 3 created poems on these
themes using the Knife Angel as inspiration.
The Knife Angel is currently visiting Coventry and is
situated outside Coventry Cathedral. It will remain in
place until 23 April 2019.

Anti-Bullying
Ambassador Training
On Thursday a group of students visited
Bishop Ullathorne Catholic School to
represent Cardinal Newman on the
Princess Diana Anti-Bullying Ambassador
Programme.
During the day student networked with other
passionate young people to exchange ideas and share
good practise.
The programme is designed to encourage young
people to make positive contributions to their
community, to empower them to achieve their full potential and give them
advice on how they can be positive role models in tackling bullying in schools.
The students have returned to Cardinal Newman with lots of ideas and
initiatives.
