Dear Residents,

As you all know we had our Fete last month, which was well received. Not only raising funds, but also awareness within the community. Reminding everyone we are here celebrating the golden years!

The $1,800.00 raised at the Fete will be going towards a theatre room. We will be creating a space were residents can relax and watch movies on a big screen without interruptions.

The winter months are upon us, please ensure

your loved ones have plenty of warm clothing in their wardrobes.

I also would like to remind visitors to be mindful of others and consider rescheduling your visit to the facility if you have any flu symptoms.

Don’t forget my door is

always open. If you have

any concerns, even if you just

want to pop in and say hello,

please do so.

Where do I start with the highlights from May, we had such an exciting month. We’ll start with the Fete, what a great success, with many visitors coming along to pick up a bargain. We had people at the door 2 hours before our advertised start time.

Residents and family members attended in droves, snatching up a sausage sizzle, coffee and a delicious cupcake! No one went home with an empty stomach that’s for sure, but we do know some left with a new hair colour.

With food, bargains, massages, face painting and entertainment, there was something for everyone. Thank you to all that volunteered, not only did we raise funds for the resident’s activities but we had fun in doing so.

Mother’s day was celebrated in style, with a delightful lunch on the Friday. Grilled salmon and sticky toffee pudding, yummy! While the Villas enjoyed an afternoon of drinks and dips in the sun, followed by the mother’s day raffle draw.

There were many smiling faces after the raffle, it was wonderful to see the prizes being won by all

visitors, staff and residents. Our mothers also had the pleasure of listening to Lena Cruz perform on the Sunday. Singing our favourite musical ballads.

We were overwhelmed with the number of supporters that turned up for our Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. With everyone enjoying a cuppa and a selection of treats, it’s no wonder we raised $300 for the Cancer Council, thank you to all.

Nan was the eldest of four children, born on Sunday 1st of October. Growing up in Arncliffe, she recalls gathering with classmates to see Amy Johnson land at Sydney Aerodrome. This was a very memorable experience for Nan, so much so Nan received pieces of an aircraft that Amy Johnson flew. Keeping the pieces as a souvenir, until later giving them to a private museum for display.

During the war Nan was a student, but she volunteered at the hospital assisting wherever she could. After finishing school she went on to university completing her Bachelor of Science. Followed by a year at teachers college.

This allowed Nan to teach, which she was very passionate about.

It was after the war when Nan met her husband Peter, the two married and settled in Blakehurst. Unfortunately Peter passed away from his war injures. Later Nan found love again with Fred, enjoying spending time together the two married not long after.

Nan was a natural organiser so it was up to her to organise all the outings and holidays. Which she didn’t mind doing at all, they had some great holidays down the south coast and all over Australia. Spending lots of time with friends is very important to Nan, she loves being the hostess.

Nan has requested a short poem she wrote about Pansies be put into the article.

PANSIES

All the little pansies faces

Growing in the garden they

Look at you with eyes of longing

For you are there lady fare

And when you come out to greet them

Leaning like a queen above

All the little pansy faces

Nancy ‘Nan’ Bennett

Wednesday the 20th May was a bright sunny autumn day when 10 of us ventured to Camden for lunch at Trattoria La Vigna, (Ristorante, Pizzeria & Winery). The restaurant is situated in the midst of their picturesque vineyards.

The menu, being an

Italian restaurant, had

many pasta and pizza

dishes to choose from.

But most of us opted for

other tasty dishes, such

as Prawns, Rib Eye or the

Pork Spare Ribs.

The refreshments included some of their delectable wines. Which we enjoyed so much a number of us purchased a bottle or two from the cellar door to take home.

The staff, although they

spoke English, were of

Italian background. The

service was amiable and

efficient, along with

hearty food, who could

complain.

A highlight on the

journey home was seeing

the autumn colours. The

red and yellow of the

trees, was very beautiful.

A return visit is highly

recommended, also a

thank you to Rhonda for

suggesting the venue.

JOKE OF THE MONTH Early on in their marriage, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were crossing the

water to Vancouver Island in Canada. The weather was unsettled and the ship was rocking violently. Just as a young petty officer arrived in the royal suite, the ship lurched and the tray of cakes he was holding fell to the floor. Surprisingly Philip jumped onto his hands and knees and helped to gather them up. After

retrieving a handful of cakes he returned to his seat and turned to Elizabeth and playfully remarked, “I’ve got mine – yours are down there.”

Prince Philip was visiting an Australian University where he was introduced to a couple identified as “Mr & Dr Robinson”. The husband explained, “my wife is a

doctor of philosophy, she is much more important than I.” Prince Philip sympathetically replied, “Ah, yes. We have that trouble in our family too.”

The 70’s By Betty Hanna

Seventy is a remarkable age.

We have three-score and ten years we’re told.

From here on, each year is a bonus for sure.

But don’t ever say we are old.

OA is a term which we never use For we’re really quite young at heart.

Though the road has been long, we think it was short,

We remember things right from the start.

We’ve lived and we’ve loved, we’ve cried and we’ve laughed.

And now we’ve reached a wonderful age. We’re now in the slow lane, no rushing

for us, we don’t have to perform on lifes stage.

When life didn’t stop, it was A.S.A.P

Do it now or you’ll br in strife. But in reverse P.A.S.A can mean so much

more – Positive Attitude, Serenity, Acceptance of

life

We don’t look the same as we use to, Some wrinkles and grey hair now show. With aches and with pains, we don’t feel

so well,

But we’re still the same person you know.

Yet the 70’s give us more freedom of time.

We can do what we like every day. We can shop or clean house, mow the

lawns or play golf, We can walk, swim, whatever we may.

The 70’s bring joy to our lives as we

watch Our children and grandchildren grow. We love each delightful personality, Each one is sheer pleasure to know.

Advice to the young is given with love,

Speak only words that will heal, not offend

Don’t sweat the small stuff be tolerant and patient,

Any problems that come – quickly mend.

And we’ve learnt many wonderful secrets in our

Seventy years giv’n from above. Faith, hope and love are most needed for

success, And the greatest of these is love.
