SPORTS, LEADERSHIP AND CULTURAL AWARDS On Monday night, our Hall was transformed to represent the four Houses of Huntly College and a brilliant evening held to celebrate our leaders and achievements for 2018. We were joined by our generous sponsors, friends of the school, whanau, staff and of course, our wonderful students. A huge thank you to Mrs van Buren and her team for organising such a fabulous night, especially to Michelle Comins for her hard work behind the scenes. An exciting part of the evening was the announcement of our 4 Head Students for 2018 - congratulations to: Head Girl - Jaylee Manukau-Papa Head Boy - Sam RIchards Deputy Head Girl - Jessica Tischendorf Deputy Head Boy - Ryan Bateup We had a large number of high calibre applicants for the Head Student role. We want to remind applicants, that you do not need a badge to be a leader. Leadership is about inspiring others through being a role model, setting goals and working hard to achieve them, giving to others and improving their learning and taking people with you on your journey. We look forward to working alongside all of our aspiring leaders next year. You can read more about the recipients of the Sports, Leadership and Cultural Awards in this panui. CURRICULUM CHANGES Thanks to the whanau who have joined us on the curriculum, change information evenings this term. It was great to hear your questions and also to share with you our vision for 2018. We started this journey early into 2017 so it is wonderful to be reaching the implementation stage when we are seeing the real differences for student learning. We have started this week with the following changes, which will continue into 2018: PUNA AKO Rather than have Year Level Deans, every teacher takes a Puna Ako group of 10 -12 students across different year levels (eg 2 Yr 9s, 2 Yr 10s, 2 Yr11s, etc.) This teacher is the central point of contact for whanau and meets the Puna Ako group for 30-40mins 4 mornings per week. Research shows us that student wellbeing and achievement is improved when a significant adult is caring for them, being their mentor, advisor, guiding them through decisions, helping with goal setting and making sure they are at school each day. Puna Ako is a curriculum strand, and teachers will be preparing lessons to work through with students. It is a great model for Tuakana Teina where senior students can peer mentor junior students. This class will help us improve the culture of learning and support in our school. JUNIOR INTEGRATED MODULES We aim to improve student engagement, attendance and retention through an integrated junior curriculum. This means students are learning through contexts that are relevant and authentic where their strengths and prior knowledge will drive the learning and teaching. This week we have been teaching 5 of the modules below in the table as a practice/trial ahead of next year. Year 9 and 10 students will be doing 5 lines of classes: Puna Ako Mentoring / goal setting / tracking achievement / peer teaching Line 1 Te Reo Matatini / Literacy - Te Reo Pāngarau / Numeracy Line 2 / 3 / 4 Kaupapa Ako / Learning together in a new area Line 5 Te Ao Māori / Cultural module All students will be part of the Line 1 and Line 5 modules We will be asking students to select modules for Lines 2/3/4 on Wednesday 31

st of January. These modules will

last 12 weeks (3 x 12 weeks for the year). Our teachers are currently working on developing these modules. Here is a sneak peak of what could be offer in 2018. There will be more modules added to our collection over the next month!

TIMETABLE Here is the timetable we have been following this week and will follow for the rest of this term. There will be changes made ahead of 2018: NCEA EXAMS External examinations are well underway! We only have one more week of official exams left and these are being held in our Library. Students will receive their results in early January, the fastest way to check their grades is online. Students should call into the School Office if they need their NSN number or tips on how to log in to check their results. We wish students all the best for the remaining exams and have been very impressed by their hard work and study plans we have seen over the past month. WE LOVE TALKING ABOUT COURSES/PLANNING/SUBJECTS FOR 2018 We have had a number of parents and students dropping in to talk about subject selection for 2018. Please do so if you have any questions. It’s a great opportunity to korero together and help our students make good decisions ahead of next year. Please call the Office to book an appointment, or pop in if you are visiting over the next few weeks. SUMMER SPORTS DAY Last Friday we had approximately 50 students take part in our Summer Sports Day held at the Hakanoa Domain which involved students signing up to participate in tennis, cross country and swimming championships. Overall the day went well, students encouraging others and competing to the best of their ability. Overall winners were acknowledged at our recently held Sports, Leadership and Cultural awards evening. HAUORA HEALTH DAY Next Thursday 30th November we are running a Health workshop in the morning from 9-12 with our Year 10s (Year 9s will be on camp.) There are internal and external agencies such as Drug and Alcohol Counsellor, Dave Harris, our School Counsellor Elizabeth Murphy, Police and Te Ahurei. We will run a rotation of 6 sessions and students will get to hear about how to look after themselves and keep safe ahead of the holidays. DATES Please keep an eye on the key dates this term. Two in particular we want to point out is ‘Meet the Puna Ako teacher’ which is 1-4pm on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th December. We would like the Puna Ako teacher, student and whanau to have a korero about 2018 and get to know each other. Puna Ako teachers will be calling you soon to invite you in to meet them on these days (or other days that might be more suitable. Therefore, students will have a slightly shorter school day on the 7th and 8th and be able to go home at 1pm after their second period. COMMUNITY Thank you for your ongoing support. We are working hard to ensure a strong finish to the year and are very much looking forward to continuing working alongside you in 2018. Nga Mihi Sharon Moller and Rachael Parker Acting Principals

YEAR 10 CAMP—Whaingaroa (Raglan) Year 10 Camp was an awesome opportunity for the year level to go away together and share some awesome outdoor experiences together. We were put into four teams - Pink Panthers, Yellow Mango, Green Hulk Smash and White Cloud XII. We had to work effectively to complete various adventure challenges including raft building, navigation, ABL challenges and adventure race. We also had the opportunity to learn how to surf in the famous Raglan waves and participate in fishing where the girls caught heaps of different fish. Surfing was cool because it was the first time we had all given it a go and we stood up like the pros. Our kaupapa on camp was "Ka ranga tonu tatau i a tatau" - Let us weave ourselves together. When we were asked what our highlight on camp was we responded with "making new connections with my group that I don't normally spend time with back at school". It was really cool bonding with others and we found out that we have heaps in common. We also focused on what the term 'resilience' means and how we can outwork this on camp when challenges arise. The Adventure Race was hard cause everyone was tired but we pushed through and completed it as a team. Thanks to the awesome staff who dedicated your time towards our camp and made this a very memorable experience for us all. Sarge Watene, Staff Morley, Whaea Kandy, Matua Hiki and Mr Steward. We would also like to thank POET for giving us this opportunity. Nerida Bateup and Vanessa Strickland - Hulk Smash ALL DAY.

Transition Day We had approximately 45 Year 8 students from Huntly Primary, Kimihia, Huntly West and Pukemiro. A big thank you to the schools involved and the staff who helped make the day a success.

Waitangi Camp This Sunday, Year 9 students and a small group of senior students will depart for Bay of Islands at 9am sharp. All students need to be on the school turf at 8.20. We are looking forward to gaining new experiences and building stronger relationships amongst our Year 9 cohort as they prepare to transition into Year 10. Thank you to all who have paid and arranged to make and complete payments. Please get in touch with Whaea Char, text or email would be the better option. Lastly, for the Parents of our Year 9’s and attending senior students there is a Waitangi Camp 2017 Facebook Group created where staff and students can post and share their memories.
