Our school stands proudly on Bundjalung land

This year our MADD production included exceptional performers from both Ballina High School and Southern Cross School K-12, forecasting great things to come with the amalgamation next year.

Written & directed by Ali Chigwidden, Lost Property followed the story of several hot-tempered and weird high school kids who, trapped in the ‘mythology wing’, unconsciously unearthed ancient myths and tales through their discovery of arcane artefacts and curios. Featuring several showstoppers with vivacious dancers, intricate and vibrant choreography, blistering vocals, hilarious characters and rip-roaring music this show was an amazing collaboration and a showcase of the remarkable talent in the Ballina education community. Where else could you see a singer airborne, belting out Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, a sassy genie granting the wish of sausage fingers, luminescent dreamweavers chasing nightmares from the stage with high-voltage Enter Sandman riff, the multimedia brilliance of Joseph Marshall, Thor working out to a lightning soundtrack or a horizontal tackle from a leprechaun? You just had to be there to believe it.

Well done to teachers Michelle Garrett, David Drinkwater, Jake Millar, Belinda Toth, Lousie Webster, Byron Christie and Skye Haig for this awesome collaboration. Lost Property ProductionThroughout last week a very well-rehearsed production was performed at the Ballina Players Theatre. Southern Cross School K-12 students were lucky enough to watch our peers show their display.

The storyline to this performance was about four seniors on a trip to the museum. They wandered off and accidently locked themselves in the mythology wing (Lost Property room!). They were accompanied by a man called Methuselah who claimed to have been locked in there for 20 years, guested by Thor, a lepricorn, a pirate and a genie. Methuselah told ancient stories about all the so called ‘lost property items’ and there was a variety of different dances and scenes to represent each story. There were loads of acts and all of them were outstanding!

Everyone who participated really gave it their all and did an outstanding job. The audience really enjoyed their time watching and had heaps of great fun.

7-12 Sport and PD/H/PE for Term 4 A lot has been happening over the past few terms with many individuals and teams representing our school with pride, achieving personal bests and gaining selection in numerous representative Far North Coast, North Coast and State Teams. We endeavour to provide a wide range of sporting opportunities and regularly see students, staff and parents working together to participate in these events. We thank you for your involvement in whatever way assists our students to enjoy their chosen pursuits.

Term 4 will see a variety of opportunities and teams actively involved in our community:

• Year 7 are off to the PCYC Gymnastics centre for a number of exciting sessions.

• Year 8 are all participating in the Sporting Schools Athletics program in their sports double periods, learning new skills and new ways to further their athletic ability, while raising funds for the school and ultimately more sports equipment for them to enjoy.

• Years 9-10 move into their new Wednesday sports both at school and within the community.

• Several representative teams will again be competing with our local schools in beach volleyball, basketball and netball just to name a few. Students are reminded to listen to daily notice announcements and at assembly for details. If in doubt students can contact the PE Department who can assist.

Finally students and parents are reminded that Southern Cross School K-12 has a proud tradition of wearing our sports uniform in both weekly PE lessons and during Wednesday Year 9-10 sport. Students are reminded that they are expected to wear their navy blue sports shirt and shorts for each session, as pictured. If it is unavailable they are expected to bring a note that explains why they don’t have it and suitable alternate apparel.

Far North Coast Futsal Gala Our U14 boys team had a great run with wins against Banora Point in the first round, Wollumbin in the second round, and narrowly lost to Mullumbimby in the final.

Our U16 boys played great football with wins in the first round against Banora Point and a 14-2 win over Wollumbin in the second round. The final against Mullumbimby High School was fantastic to watch with a number of goals scored by both teams at a very high intensity. In the final seconds of the game Jake Croft and Gene Grant manufactured an impressive goal to win the game and the title of Far North Coast Champions.

The U14 girls had a convincing win in their first game against Tweed River allowing them to advance to the semi final. Our girls showed great fighting spirit and won the game 4-2. In the grand final they came up against a strong Mullumbimby team. The girls fought hard but went down 3-1.

The U16 girls suffered an early loss against Wollumbin. However, they bounced back with a 5-0 win against Murwillumbah. They closed out the day with a 1-1 draw against Kingscliff.

Principals Address to Year 12 (excerpt)Alan Alda said, ”The best things said come last. People will talk for hours saying nothing and then linger at the door with words that come with a rush from the heart.”

Year 12 Farewell Assemblies and speeches certainly do this. Your teachers and parents and carers, grandparents, bosses, friends, coaches and other people in your life have watched you grow. Growing up is never straight forward. The hardest part is knowing that there will never be another school time like this one that you are leaving behind.” There are so many stories to tell each other about - Year 7 camp, the Sydney Excursion and Snow trip but also about funny moments in the classroom, parties that we don’t want to know about, ridiculously hard assessment tasks, exams and major projects, face book funnies and memories from primary school. How many photos will you laugh at today? For some, this will be the first time in your young life that you are reminiscing.

As you leave the hall today we remember all you have been to us and the school, words that we haven’t said rush from the heart for the days when we walk through the school remembering your antics, your enthusiasm, your squabbles and your intelligence, your creativity, your odd garments and funny covered footwear.

To the Captains, Harry, Caitlin, Sally and Emily, thank you for the enthusiasm and integrity you have demonstrated in this position. You have made the roles your own and been outstanding models for the incoming team.

To Year 12 Advisor, Mandy Pratt - you have coached and led these young people with an open heart and a belief that each one of them is exceptional.

To the parents and carers, we say thank you. It is not an easy journey, seeing young people through to their thirteenth year of schooling. They are cute and sweet, funny and adorable...when they were three. Now they are still cute and sweet, funny and adorable but low and behold they have developed a voice that is critical and creative, interested and argumentative, independent, louder and at times hard to hear. Congratulations!

To the teachers, the SASS, canteen, cleaning and grounds staff - thank you for giving your best to support these students and helping them become independent individuals.

CJ Bell said “I think that the best thing we can do for our children is to allow them to do things for themselves, allow them to be strong, allow them to experience life on their own terms, allow them to take the subway...let them be better people, let them believe more in themselves.”

Southern Cross School K-12 and all our local feeder primary schools, our whole community, parents, friends, grandparents, local sporting and cultural clubs have been part of your lives to this day and we wish you the best in your exams, in your future. Don’t leave anything behind as you go forward…no regrets, no words of thanks left unsaid and make sure you matter.

Five Ways to Eat More Healthily.Try these 5 ways to eat more healthily every day. It is easier than you may think.

• Swap your snack. Many people reach for a snack or two in between meals. Snacking is fine, just be sure to choose healthy options. The key is to have some healthy snacks ready when hunger hits.

• Cut one unhealthy treat. Try to nix one unhealthy food item each day. Whether it is a donut in the morning, bag of chips at lunch, or chocolate cake after dinner.

• DO NOT drink sweetened drinks.

• Skip seconds. Taking a second helping can add up to unwanted calories. If you still do not feel satisfied after a meal, add a second helping of vegetables, fruit, or salad.

• Just say "no" to fried food. Frying food adds lots of unhealthy calories and saturated fat to any dish. Instead of fried chicken or fish, choose grilled, or poached instead. And skip the French fries. Instead, see if you can substitute for the vegetable of the day or a side salad.
