VETVocational Education and Training (VET)

Welcome to our 2019 VET students – Hamilton Secondary College students, re-entry students and regional secondary students who are undertaking VET courses here at Hamilton Secondary College. We are a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and run a number of VET courses for students wanting an accredited qualification, as well as their SACE. We also welcome back the other RTOs who deliver courses alongside us: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation of SA- Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing), MADEC Australian- Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, Minda- Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), PEER- Certificate II in Electrotechnology and Independent Institute of Food Processing- Certificate II in Food Processing.

AttendanceIt is important that students undertaking VET courses attend regularly, as courses are delivered on one or two days per week. If your child is absent, the College should be notified regarding their absence and they must see their VET trainer to catch up on any work missed. If they miss other lessons to attend their VET course, it is important that they contact their subject teacher to ensure they catch up on work missed.

Work PlacementMany students undertaking VET courses are required to undergo a certain number of hours of Work Placement. Students should start seeking a Work Placement Provider early and getting their documentation to their VET Coordinator and VET Trainer. Students will need to provide evidence of five hours of WHS training, at least two to four weeks prior to going on a placement.

If you have any queries about VET courses please contact me on 82758300

Apprenticeships and employmentYear 9 to Year 12 familiesWhat is the latest information for parents and students interested in gaining an apprenticeship, a traineeship or employment? You may have heard through the media that the South Australian and Federal Governments are now focusing on apprenticeships and training as a key focus for students and young adults.Hamilton Secondary College is likely to be involved with this imitative this year.We know that many students are making decisions too late during their school career to successfully apply for apprenticeships and skilled employment. If you and your parents are interested in finding out more, please contact the College on 82758300 or email [email protected]

Opportunity to study with Defense Industry this yearHamilton Secondary College has successfully partnered with TAFE and the submarine and ship building industry for many years.

Many of our students have gained positions to study Computer Aided Modelling and have successfully modelled submarines, air warfare destroyers and graduated from the 6 month program.Students are able to gain 10 SACE credits for Stage 1 at the end of this course.Students in Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 are encouraged to apply for this opportunity in 2019.Interested parents and students are invited to contact the College on 82758300 to find out more and register your interest.

Re-entry CampusThe 2019 school year is now underway with just over 100 re-entry students enrolled in the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) at Hamilton Secondary College. We wish them all well with the decision to return to study, complete SACE and increase career opportunities through finishing their secondary education. Significant amounts of research demonstrate that employment outcomes and increases in salaries are consistent with the level of educational achievement, and completing SACE opens many doors, including gaining a place in further education such as TAFESA or university. Our outstanding SACE results in 2018 highlight this point. The class of 2018 included several re-entry students who made the choice to return to HSC, complete Year 12 and achieve an ATAR to gain entry into a university course. These included:

• Michelle Bille was offered a place in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging) at the University of South Australia• Shokofeh Derakhshanian was offered a place in the Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science) Masters of Opticon, Flinders University • Foroutan Derakhshanian was offered a place in the Bachelor of Podiatry, University of South Australia • Tyson Drysdale was offered a place in the Bachelor of Law and Legal Practice, Flinders University• Miroslawa (Myra) Tsiavlis achieved entry into the Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design at TafeSA

In addition to several students achieving A+ grades in the SACE, two re-entry students achieved Merits and will be awarded their certificates at Government House in coming weeks- Michelle Bille for Stage 2 Health and Susan Bourke for Stage 2 Community Studies. Congratulations Michelle and Susan!

Year 8 Information Evening/ Middle School

Firstly, in my role as Assistant Principal of the Middle School, I would like to welcome all of our new Middle School families and to welcome back all of our returning families. This year is going to be even bigger than the last with more opportunities for your children to be involved in the extra curricula programs, sports, groups and clubs in 2019.For the Year 8 students, starting their high school journey will be a nerve racking and exciting time. They will be making new friends, finding the balance between seven different subjects and will be developing the skills needed to be more independent in their learning but not without support. Our wonderful Year 8 team will be beside them the whole way. The team includes Bradley Cummins, who will be looking after students in 801 and Natasha Bamford, who will be looking after students in 802. We are all really looking forward to meeting you in Week 3 at our annual Year 8 BBQ and Parent/Caregiver information evening. The Year 9 students have started the year with some familiar faces and some newer faces as we have integrated the Care Groups into two mixed groups. Our wonderful Care Group teachers, Monica Banks and Angus Fisher, have followed the group up from Year 8 to Year 9 and are excited to see what amazing things this group will achieve in 2019. Finally, our Year 10 group have a big year ahead as they begin the SACE journey in Semester 2 and, for some, their first experience of Vocational Education and Training courses. This will be a big challenge, but they are being led by the experienced Amanda Furness and supported by their Care Group teachers. I am really looking forward to leading this team in my role as Assistant Principal of the Middle School and working with a range of staff to ensure that all Year 8, 9 and 10 students are supported to achieve excellence in their learning and develop the skills and qualities they need to be successful in their transition to the senior years of high school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Care Group teachers via email, a note or call to the Front Office. The Care Group teachers will be able to assist you or direct you to the appropriate person. I am so excited about the opportunity to work with your child and I look forward to meeting you at the different events throughout the year.

Kristy PowerAssistant Principal

Science/ STEM/ Space School/ MAPSScienceIt has been a busy start to the year for Science at Hamilton Secondary College. Students in Years 8-10 have begun to develop their understanding of microscopic and atomic structures; how systems at a range of scales are shaped by flows of energy and matter and interactions due to forces, and the ability to quantify changes and relative amounts.

Our Year 8 students have begun the year by learning about the different types of equipment used in science laboratories; for many of them it is the first time they have studied in a laboratory and there has been much excitement about what learning in Science involves. Our Year 9 students are exploring Chemistry and learning about nuclear decay, and our Year 10 students have embarked on their studies of either Astrophysics or the development of Chemistry over time.

Last year’s SACE results Stage 1 and Stage 2 Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Psychology were impressive, and we are looking forward to

another successful year.

All students are reminded that Homework Club runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and is an ideal opportunity to get even more support.

STEM2018 saw the construction of our brand new $2.5M STEM Innovation Centre. This exciting learning area consists of five open plan zones created to inspire student engagement through the delivery of innovative learning experiences that allow students to ideate, realise, and test the solutions they design to real-world problems. Students are able to access the materials and equipment they need to create their solutions - everything from 3D printers and laser cutters to soldering irons, circuit boards and robotics, can examine the science behind the problems they are investigating in the laboratory, and develop coding and programming skills in the technology zone. They can even carry out microgravity experiments using the gravity drop tower

or test aerodynamics in our wind tunnel!

Already, our new Innovation Centre is proving popular as our Year 8 students investigate robotics by designing solutions to various space challenges using Lego EV3 Mindstorms, and our Year 9 students attempt to build a ‘smart rocket’ containing the custom-designed technology needed to detect when the rocket has reached apogee before deploying and safely landing its payload.

Space SchoolHamilton Space School proved to be extremely popular in 2018, with many students from Hamilton Secondary College and visiting South Australian schools completing our Mission to Mars program. Already, 2019 is shaping up to be an equally popular and busy year.

Last year, Space School was honoured to welcome a number of distinguished guests, including South Australia Premier Steven Marshall, Minister for Education John Gardner,

and Deputy Director of NASA Goddard Flight Centre, Dr Christyl Johnson. We were also delighted to collaborate with the United Arab Emirates Space Agency as part of a Memorandum of Understanding between Defence SA and the UAE Space Agency. Last August, Hamilton Space School hosted twelve students from the United Arab Emirates, who completed a six-day program at Space School, carrying out a range of practical, immersive activities investigating the principles of astronomy, robotics, rocketry, human bioscience and interplanetary space exploration - including the Mission to Mars. This year, we are looking forward to hosting further space camps for students from the United Arab Emirates and we are delighted to be welcoming Director-General of the UAE Space Agency, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Nasser Al Ahbabi to visit Space School early in Term 1.

Caroline JohnstoneAssistant Principal

At the end of last year, MAPS Film School farewelled our much treasured Dr. Leigh Sutton to retirement. Leigh was committed to opening up education opportunities for all regardless of students previous education level and personal circumstances. He taught with fairness, energy and unbounded humour. Sandra, Matt, Riley and myself will endeavour to keep the spirit of Leigh alive in our building. He taught us well and left us well equipped to follow in his footsteps as educators.

This year, Matt Squire, our long serving Technical Officer will be working 3 days a week in the MAPS building and extending his teaching career at Hamilton on the other 2 days. Last year, Matt earnt the qualification of a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessing and this year will be solely responsible for delivering Hamilton’s Certificate III in Screen and Media course to SACE students.

MAPS has hired young video gun, Reily Scott, who will be our Technical Officer 2 days a week while Matt teaches.

We had 2 successful screenings at the Mercury Cinema at the end of the year and a big thank you to the Hamilton staff who attended. Your support is very much appreciated. As staff we thought the quality of the 2018 student films were outstanding and we are very happy that their hard work is already being recognised.

In great news for us, 4 MAPS films have been selected amongst the 10 finalists for the 2019 Fleurieu Film Festival. This is a big deal in our industry and our students will be competing against both national and international entries for a number of awards. To be eligible for the festival, films needed to be under 8 minutes and include the theme Climate Change.

MAPS staff congratulate the finalists; Diploma student Gina Cameron for her witty comedy DEVIL’S BUREAUCRAT, Diploma student Brodie Winning for his heart wrenching drama HARVEST, Advanced Diploma student Tom Parolin for his edgy experimental art piece MEA CULPA and Advanced Diploma student Nick Thompson for his visually stunning documentary WIND GIANTS. Staff and students will be in attendance at the Festival on the 9th of February.

Wellbeing at Hamilton Secondary CollegeThe Department For Education recognises the importance of the wellbeing of young people and the pivotal link of wellbeing to learner achievement and success beyond school. As a result, Hamilton has a Wellbeing Coordinator. As a Wellbeing Coordinator, I will be a point of call for students and families to discuss matters of health and wellbeing in order for our young people at Hamilton to flourish and to enjoy healthy relationships in their schooling.

A little bit about myself… This is my 8th year working as a teacher at Hamilton Secondary College. Some families may already know me from working with their children in the Senior School. During 2018 I moved from being the Year 12 / SACE Coordinator into the Wellbeing Coordinator role. I am very passionate about empowering all young people to succeed, and see that our capacity to form healthy relationships, building our resilience, positive mindset, and looking after our general health, is imperative to success at school and accomplishment in life. I have a Degree in Criminology as well as my Masters in Teaching, so one of my strong interests is certainly in Social Justice. I have worked extensively in areas of Youth Justice and Aboriginal education. I am excited to be a part of developing programs at Hamilton in our Student Services Team which will focus holistically on building student self-empowerment so that everyone has the skills and confidence to fulfil their own aspirations in life. As I always say to students, “Always believe in yourself and your potential.”

If you have any questions or would like to speak to a member of our Student Services Team, please do not hesitate to call the Front Office to book an appointment.

Hamilton Secondary College uses In-School Psychology to provide free psychological services to our students. If you would like some information to access this service, please contact our Wellbeing Coordinator, Tamara Seaman

Student Services TeamHi everyone! My name is Henry Lee and I am the Pastoral Care Worker at Hamilton Secondary College. I look forward to carrying out my role as Pastoral Care Worker in supporting the wellbeing of students,

their families and staff members; all to help promote a healthy and positive learning environment at Hamilton Secondary College. My passion is found in helping youths reach their full potential and helping them as they navigate through secondary school life. Together with the Wellbeing Team, I hope to support students in developing social skills and other key attributes such as confidence, team work and positive relationship building.

A bit about myself… I have a background of a combined Bachelor Degree in Behavioural Science and Laws and Legal Practice. I also studied Theology and received a Diploma from Tabor College. Over the past 10 years, I've had the opportunity to work closely with youths and have been privileged to see many of them step into leadership and contributory roles in their places of study, work and church. I am married to my beautiful wife, Amanda and together we have a bouncy little boy named Josiah. He is almost 2 years old and is full of energy! As for interests, I enjoy a good bit of tennis, spending time with my family and going to the movies.
