From the English Faculty This term, the English faculty is fully immersed in the written word. Junior classes are currently reading fiction pieces. Year 7 have commenced their study of fairy-tales, myths and fables. Year 8 are well and truly enrolled at Hogwarts, as they follow the initial adventure of Harry Potter. Year 9 are speculating on dystopian and science fiction texts, whilst the Year 10 students are either reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird or SE Hinton's The Outsiders.

Poetry is the text type of choice for many Year 11s. The early twentieth century verses of WB Yeats and Wilfred Owen are being used to introduce students to war and nationalistic poetry. Year 12 are concluding their HSC studies with either Jane Austen's Emma or the poetry of Oodgeroo Noonuccal. Both English Studies classes continue to refine their real world communication skills. We wish Year 12 every success for their trail examinations in Week 5. Fiona Lambell Head Teacher English

Welcome back to Term 3. Firstly, it is with great pleasure that Gilgandra High School introduces our Relieving Principal for the remainder of 2020, Mrs Erica Burge. Mrs Burge comes from Wadalba Community School and possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience in education. Mrs Burge is very much looking forward to working with community members at the High School and the wider community. As we are aware, there has been significant outbreaks of Covid-19 in Victoria, which has subsequently spread to NSW. This may impact the learning platforms offered to students at Gilgandra High School. Please keep watch of the school’s website, NESA and NSW DoE sites for more information. In addition, students are required to use hand sanitizer on an ongoing basis. Other information includes:

• Students with lunch passes are to ensure they have returned to school by 12:40 pm ready to start Block 3.

• All students are required by the Department to sanitize their hands regularly. There is sanitizer in each classroom and this is a measurement implemented to ensure the health and safety of all staff and students here at GHS.

• Energy drinks are not permitted on school grounds, so please do not bring them.

It is also a hugely important time for Year 12 as their HSC trials will commence in Week 5 and finish in Week 6. All students are encouraged to seek assistance from their teachers to best prepare themselves. My thanks once again to the wider community for your ongoing support of Gilgandra High School. Josh Webb Deputy Principal

Scholarship Awarded We would like to congratulate Year Nine students, Kaydance Wieland and Anton Davis on their commitment to learning. Both of these students have been awarded a prestigious William Rubensohn Foundation Scholarship. The school also appreciates support from the Foundation for our students.

From the Ag Plot Year 9 Agriculture students have been busy taking measurements of the Brassica fodder trial at ‘Carlginda’. This trial, which has been run in partnership with AMPS and agronomist Martin Murray, is looking at the recovery rate of the plant after grazing. Due to such vigorous growth of the plant combined with ideal growing conditions, stock numbers have recently been increased to gain more accurate results. We would like to recognise the generosity of Russell Anderson and Nutrien Ag Solutions. The company has donated four large gates to the school. This donation will make a huge difference to our agriculture department and help improve road access to the agricultural plot. A massive thanks to the Chandler family for their generous donation of 12 bales of hay and to Nathan Whiteman for his donation of one ton of wheat to the school. We are grateful for such amazing community support which allows us to provide better learning opportunities to our students. Teresa Standing Agriculture/Primary Industries Teacher
