When I was about 14 years old, I was new in shells for 1 year and pretty intensive already, my parents took me to a special place: the old city of Concarneau. This was by now more than 4 decades ago: Concarneau was already specialized in summer tourism and one of the inhabitants got a house full of "glued shells", which he transformed in a small museum. So, one could see in his house hundreds of small dolls, the shirts made of Patella vulgata, the body a Buccinum undatum, the arms Turritella communis and so on. But there were also ships, houses and the like. Not one square centimeter inside his museum was left without a glued and varnished shell. What I remember the most are miniatures of animals - cows and horses - of which the legs were made of Troschelia berniciensis. I had never seen this shell, and I did not manage to get even one from the old man. It took me a decade before I realized what he got from his local fisherman… In my whole life I returned only once to Concarneau and did not find back the shop. Same experience now on my third visit: gone. A strange story. For newcomers to the newsletters: best follow this trip on Google Earth by typing Key words such as "Concarneau" and/or "Quiberon". This will give an easy geographic overview of how we move. The same keywords can be used in Wikipedia: many of the places are so charged with history that Wikipedia has pages and pages with the most interesting details on each of them. "Concarneau" is a small but good example on that. We continue with documented photographs: NEWSLETTER: FRANCE, BRITTANY 9

Concarneau today is two different parts the old medieval city similar to Saint-MaloConcarneau has still all defense walls from 750 years ago standing Next to this is themodern city big and well doing

On this photo the modern city on the right the entrance with the typical bridgegoing to the gates of what is called the Ville Close or the Closed City - the old anduppermost touristic part

In contrast with Saint-Malo Concarneau is much smaller but equally charming Asyou can see on the bridge thousands of people go in For us this was the least goodexperience in the whole trip because the place was crowded almost elbow to elbow in asingle road with dozens and dozens of tourist shops One could hardly move So wereduced our stay inside the city to a couple of hours the time to go in do the traject makea little shopping and back to the cars

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 320

The parking for cars is about 500 meters walking from the Ville Close but the view istruly nice here the outside walls with old roofs pointing above them and the ancient towerof the church

In front a few boats all leisure boats except one rather small fishing boatConcarneau has a long tradition of tuna fishing with blue nets We are indeed in theFinistegravere which is the most western point of France sticking far out in the Atlantic OceanThe Finistegravere has a special atmosphere which we like much Less rich in shells comparedto places as Licircle de Breacutehat or Quiberon but it is all in the great ocean experience a deepblue sea with superb waves and white foams

I spend quite some months in the Finistegravere in places as Pentrez - with a wide beachwhere one can find Acteon tornatilis at low tide or Audierne where at 15 years I couldexperience fabulous underwater hunting parties Long gone times with other valuescompared to today Douarnenez got strong souvenirs of big boats with thousands oflangoustines arriving from West Africa - with each time dozens of Cymbium shells for thetourist business

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 420

Inside the old city on top of the crowded people the locals went ahead with a piperband It was a lovely sight and it brought in great atmosphere This is not Scotland butpipers are part of the Celtic culture and the Bretons have their own bands and songs whichare popular It was good to see that many youngsters continue the piping tradition

As a harbor Concarneau gathered spices from all over the planet and some of theshops specialized in that to the delight of Mona who is particularly good also in Indiandishes

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 520

After the not so brilliant crowded experience of Concarneau back to nature We paida visit to Le Pouldu in the traces of our beloved painter Gauguin

Le Pouldu is part of a commune that listens to the Celtic name Clohars-Carnoeumlt LePouldu is also a small harbor that attracted quite some tourists at the end of the 19th

century and before the WWI

A lady called Marie Henry built in 1887 a pension called the Buvette de la PlageHard to translate but translated rudimentarily it means Drinking place on the Beach

In October 1889 Paul Gauguin and the Dutch painter Meyer de Haan went livingthere They were joined by other painters who usually were in nearby Pont-Aven not theleast Seacuterusier was part of the group in the pension

These gentlemen made a wild feast of their art in the Buvette of Marie Henry Mariebecame the lover of de Haan and they got a baby together All painters painted wallswindows furniture and even the ceilings Then there were lots of musical evenings and thelike Gauguin left Le Pouldu in 1890hellip But the region attracted dozens of other artists asdid another nearby village

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 620

The Buvette de la Plage of Marie Henry The place where it all happened It is now asmall but nice museum well kept There is also a museum shop with many books on thepainters and the events to be remembered

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 720

The reconstruction is well done including the Japanese Ukiyo-e-woodblockpaintings They all knew Hokusai Hiroshige and the others It is thought that Gauguincopied his black lines around the subjects from the Japanese woodblockshellip Otherstudents of the painter think his lines were inspired by his few months in pottery factoriesnear Paris

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 820

And this is how these gentlemen arranged the Buvette of Marie Henry The originaldrawings were removed and sold as soon as the artists left what we see now arereproductions but well done and truly realistic Gauguin became indeed expensive shortlyafter he left Le Pouldu

Gauguin - his working place Looking at it I find there is little difference between thisand many houses I have seen in my countryside as a kid - between 1958 and 1962

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 920

Especially this was very touching to my heart as both my grandfathers - they wereabout 80+ when I was very young got these and they used them daily in the garden All insolid wood I remember they put thick socks and straw inside

We spent some exciting time in Le Pouldu which is a nice place with a big estuarysmall harbor and of course the Buvette After that wider horizons attracted A few yearsago Sheila and I stumbled upon a fantastic place well hidden in the countryside TheAbbey of Saint-Maurice de Carnoeumlt

A small but amazingly beautiful ride from Le Pouldu will bring you there The abbey isalso part of Clohars-Carnoeumlt but is situated higher on the river on the right bank of thestart of the estuary

It is one of the most attractive places of Brittany yet still undiscovered by the masstourism The above photo is what you see when arriving at the high tide The river Laiumlta inall its glory Tons of birdlife and all kinds of nature untouched

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1020

As usual the monks changed a little the place around but only for the better Theymade themselves a grand park This Abbey was founded in 1170 and the monks built italong an old Roman Road For 6 centuries a group of Cistercian monks took care then itwas renovated in the 17th century to be destroyed by the French revolution and the Terrorregime that followed

Inside some medieval Cistercians architecture One sees the same in Belgiumusually also destroyed by the French Terror regime at that same time

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1120

Many of the ruins are like in a movie Charming peaceful witnesses of times long gone

We saw flying around several of these large guys about 4 cm in length a wasp likenever seen before in Europe It is called the European hornet Vespa crabo and they can

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1220

spray their venom half a meter around They have painful stingshellip

And in the forest about everywhere in the underwoods with dead wood many Elonaquimperiana a protected species in France We do not know why protected the forests inBrittany are about full of them from the north to the southhellip But first time we couldphotograph these alive ourselves A beautiful animal

Possibly a kind of Erebia species many were flying around on the grass fields Insectlife is untouched in these forests

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1320

Philippe got much time with many birds there and this resulted in some stunningphotos as the one shown here

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1420

The monks made sure you can relax everywhere Here a tree of about 150 years oldstill alive Most likely this bank has also seen a lot of history

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1520

For the readers of the newsletters it is no secret any longer I love fishes Here I couldpoint to Sheila some of my beloved creatures hiding in the many water channels

But to all good things comes an end After the Abbey of Saint-Maurice de Carnoeumltwhere we spend an almost complete afternoon we headed back to Saint-Malo for onenight The next day we traveled the 700 km north to Belgium

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1620

There I found back part of my libraries and collections Here my beloved Punu maskfrom around 1930 from Gabon Behind you can see that the shell books are never far awayon the left a poor condition series with Gmelin books on the right the PMM books Eachplace has its charms

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1720

From Brittany Pont-Aven a great thank you to all the readers of the newsletters Oursurvey from two months ago taught us that the newsletters are the most popular of ouremails which was a good stimulation to end this series complete which I did not alwayssucceed in the past

A great thank you to Philippe for all the wonderful photographs most were taken byhim Not the least to Sheila and Jerlyn who re-read and correct my spelling and rules andregulations mistakes when writing And also to Angel for the layouts of the newsletters sothat all of you can open them and read them avidly

As a harbor Concarneau gathered spices from all over the planet and some of theshops specialized in that to the delight of Mona who is particularly good also in Indiandishes

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 620

The Buvette de la Plage of Marie Henry The place where it all happened It is now asmall but nice museum well kept There is also a museum shop with many books on thepainters and the events to be remembered

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 720

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 820

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 920

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1020

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1120

Many of the ruins are like in a movie Charming peaceful witnesses of times long gone

We saw flying around several of these large guys about 4 cm in length a wasp likenever seen before in Europe It is called the European hornet Vespa crabo and they can

spray their venom half a meter around They have painful stingshellip

And in the forest about everywhere in the underwoods with dead wood many Elonaquimperiana a protected species in France We do not know why protected the forests inBrittany are about full of them from the north to the southhellip But first time we couldphotograph these alive ourselves A beautiful animal

Possibly a kind of Erebia species many were flying around on the grass fields Insectlife is untouched in these forests

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1320

Philippe got much time with many birds there and this resulted in some stunningphotos as the one shown here

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1420

The monks made sure you can relax everywhere Here a tree of about 150 years oldstill alive Most likely this bank has also seen a lot of history

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 1620

There I found back part of my libraries and collections Here my beloved Punu maskfrom around 1930 from Gabon Behind you can see that the shell books are never far awayon the left a poor condition series with Gmelin books on the right the PMM books Eachplace has its charms

The Buvette de la Plage of Marie Henry The place where it all happened It is now asmall but nice museum well kept There is also a museum shop with many books on thepainters and the events to be remembered

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 720

9282019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=201 820

Many of the ruins are like in a movie Charming peaceful witnesses of times long gone

We saw flying around several of these large guys about 4 cm in length a wasp likenever seen before in Europe It is called the European hornet Vespa crabo and they can

And in the forest about everywhere in the underwoods with dead wood many Elonaquimperiana a protected species in France We do not know why protected the forests inBrittany are about full of them from the north to the southhellip But first time we couldphotograph these alive ourselves A beautiful animal

There I found back part of my libraries and collections Here my beloved Punu maskfrom around 1930 from Gabon Behind you can see that the shell books are never far awayon the left a poor condition series with Gmelin books on the right the PMM books Eachplace has its charms
