TITLE: Teen Librarian – Part Time (24 hours/week)

DESCRIPTION: The Teen Librarian develops and implements collections, outreach, and programming for teens, parents, and other adults who work with teens.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides direct reference and readers advisory service to patrons of all ages.

Plans and executes collection development in a variety of formats and subject areas, including selection, display, access, analysis, weeding, and budget management. Manages graphic novels, manga and teen AV collections.

Plans and executes programs and services for teens to promote or facilitate the use of library resources. This includes, but is not limited to, seasonal reading programs, book talks, school visits, STEM workshops, and book discussion groups.

Recommends annual goals and objectives for the teen department.

Creates an environment that attracts and invites teens to use the facilities and collections.

Facilitates and maintains teen pages on the library’s official web site, as well as blogs and social networking accounts set up to reach out virtually to the library’s teen patrons.

Works as a liaison with the schools to encourage teens to use the library.

Plymouth community teen champion and advocate.

Attends and participates in staff meetings and committees.

Represents the Library in community organizations.

Performs other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school.

Strong public service orientation.

Thorough knowledge of standard public library reference and readers advisory sources.

Knowledge of current reading, viewing, and listening interests of teens.

Must work effectively with adults, teens, and youth and be committed to and enthusiastic about teen library services.

Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, managers, and vendors.

Flexibility in scheduling is required. This position requires evenings and weekends throughout the year.

Digital media skills such as gaming, coding, and video/audio editing preferred.

SALARY: $21.63/per hour

BENEFITS: Pro-rated paid vacation and sick time and holiday pay.

July 20, 2017 The regular meeting of The Library Network (TLN) Board was held on Thursday, July 20, at The Library Network office in Novi. Board Members present: Mark Wollenweber, Chair, Lois VanStipdonk, Vice-Chair; Stephen Harper, Treasurer; Rita VanBrandeghen, and Ryan Clark. A quorum. Board Members Absent & Excused: Victor Cardenas, Kim Potter, Arthur Woodford, and Reginald Williams. Additional attendees: Paul McCann, SASUG Representatives; Patty Braden, Steering Committee Chair; Jim Pletz; TLN Director; Rick Rosekrans, Anne Neville, and Judith Kozakowski, TLN.

The Chair called the meeting to order at 10:56 a.m. 1. Call to audience

Introduction of Guests – None Public Comment – None

2. The Agenda. Motion by Harper, supported by VanBrandeghen, to approve the Agenda as presented. Motion carried unanimously.

3 Approval of the Minutes. Motion by VanBrandeghen, supported by Clark, to approve the

minutes of the June 15, 2017 meeting of the Board as presented. Motion carried unanimously. 4 Communications & Announcements – Letter from Gleaners thanking the TLN Membership and Staff for participating in the 2017 Food

for Fines/Food for Thought campaign. It was a successful campaign with over 13,875 pounds of food collected.

Letter from the Novi Fire Department regarding the Bi-Annual building inspection. No violations

were noted on their inspection of TLN premises on June 30, 2017.

Motion by VanStipdonk, supported by Clark, to authorize the TLN Director to sign a 36 month lease with Pitney Bowes for their DM300C digital mailing system at $148.18 per month. Lease valid September 30, 2017 – September 30, 2020.

Motion by VanStipdonk, supported by VanBrandeghen, to authorize the TLN Board Chair and

the TLN Director to execute a seven year contract with the Carl Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Library Corporation, as the vendor of a new integrated library system. Motion carried unanimously.

6. Reports Shared Automation System Users’ Group – McCann reported that the Executive

Committee reviewed the 2018 TLN budget and the committee voted to use $51,000. of deferred revenue to lower costs for the shared system members.

The Brandon Township library is leaving the Shared System on September 30, 2017. Steering Committee – Braden reported that the Membership Picnic was held on July 14.

Randy Riley, State Librarian, was the keynote speaker. The picnic was held at the Heritage Park in Farmington.

The 2018 Steering Committee Chair is Garrett Hungerford, Director of the Redford

Township District Library, the Vice-Chair is Lori Coryell, Director of the Chelsea District Library.

Dave Ewick, Director of the Southfield Public Library, and Alyson Lobert, Director of the

Walled Lake City Library, will be joining the Steering Committee. Finance/Real Estate Committee –None Human Resources Committee –None Director’s Report –In addition to the Director’s written report, Pletz reported that he is

working with the City of Westland to identify candidates for the currently vacant Library Board at the city’s Library. Fourteen people submitted letters of interest for a position on the Board, eight candidates were chosen for further consideration for the five member Board.

7. Financial Reports – Motion by VanStipdonk, supported by Harper, to receive and file the

following reports. 3. The Agenda. Motion by Clark, supported by VanBrandeghen, to approve the Agenda as

presented. Motion carried unanimously. 4 Approval of the Minutes. Motion by VanStipdonk, supported by Cardenas, to approve the

minutes of the July 20, 2017 meeting of the Board as presented. Motion carried unanimously. 5. Communications & Announcements – Letter from Westland’s Mayor William Wild was discussed. The letter detailed Mayor Wild’s

appreciation for Pletz’s involvement in helping to identify a new library board for the William Faust Public Library in Westland.

Motion by Harper, supported by VanStipdonk, to approve the adoption amendment to the TLN Budget and Appropriations for Fiscal Year ending September 30, 2017. Motion carried unanimously. Motion by Cardenas, supported by Harper to approve adoption of the TLN Budget and Appropriations for the Fiscal Year ending September 30, 2018. Motion carried unanimously.

7. Reports Shared Automation System Users’ Group – Morse reported that the Brandon Township

Library started their independent library system, Biblionix. They are now a stand-alone library and are no longer part of TLN’s Shared System Libraries.

Morse reported that there are currently 50 libraries in TLN’s Shared System. The migration

kick-off is scheduled for the middle of November. TLN will continue to use our current agency codes to begin testing data for the migration to the new system anticipated to be Memorial Day weekend 2018. Libraries will go live with CARL on the Tuesday following Memorial Day.

Steering Committee – Pletz reported the addition of the Wixom Public Library to the

Steering Committee. Joyce Farkas, from the Southgate Veterans Memorial Library, has withdrawn from the Steering Committee as she is preparing to retire. Pletz reported that he is working on developing continuing education curriculum for librarians.

Nominating Committee - Wollenweber appointed Woodford, Clark, and Cardenas to the

Board Officers Nominating Committee. They will compile a list of officers to hold positions within the TLN Board. The election of officers will take place at the October 19 TLN Board meeting.

Finance/Real Estate Committee –Committee met August 7 to review and discuss the proposed 2016/17 budget revisions, and the proposed 2017/18 budget.

Human Resources Committee –None Director’s Report –Wollenweber reported that Pletz has been selected, by Wayne State

University’s School of Information Services, as a 2017 Shining Star. Pletz presented Certificates of Recognition to three Board members whose terms end

effective 9-30-17. Certificates were presented to: Lois VanStipdonk for her service to the Board representing Class VI libraries. VanStipdonk

has been reelected to a three-year term. Rita VanBrandeghen for her service to the Board representing Shared System libraries.

VanBrandeghen has been reelected to a three-year term. Ryan Clark for his service to the Board representing Class I, II, and III libraries. Clark has

been reelected to a three-year term.

Supervised by: Circulation Supervisor Part-time position, including evening and Saturday hours (14-28 hours/week)

Job description:

Assist patrons at the Circulation Desk.

Register and/or renew patrons’ library cards.

Assist Librarian Assistants with processing of new materials.

Job Posting Delivery Driver

24 Hours Per week (three 8 hour work days, day shift)

DEFINITION: Position is responsible for the performance of routine tasks involved in the delivery of library materials, supplies and equipment. Positions are part-time. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Operates under the general supervision of the Distribution Supervisor, but most of the time is remote from any direct supervision. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only) Drives delivery vehicle. Delivers library material between the Cooperative Library and member libraries, and between member libraries. Responsible for sorting materials for delivery enroute, for loading and unloading materials and for the care of the delivery vehicle. Also responsible for sorting library materials on-site. Other duties as assigned. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

1. Ability to legally drive delivery vehicle. 2. Reliability and mature judgment are essential. 3. Ability to communicate and relate well with personnel at member libraries. 4. Ability to carry out verbal and written instruction. 5. Ability to lift to chest level, and carry, delivery tubs weighing up to 65 pounds. 6. Ability to sort by numeric and alpha codes.

Sort and shelve books and issue and receive library materials. Provide basic assistance to patrons and other staff. JOB TITLE: Youth Services Librarian (Part-time) DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Library SUMMARY OF FUNCTION Under the general supervision of the Library Director, performs a variety of professional duties which directly result in the delivery of library services to the community through direct and indirect public contact.
