POSITION AVAILABLE Adult Services Librarian (part-time)

Pay Range: $17.60 - $25.09 an hour Hours: Up to 20 hours a week, with one Saturday a month and at least 4 Sundays a year

The Salem-South Lyon District Library is looking for a part-time Adult Services Librarian to join our team. We will consider new graduates. Posting is two pages long and includes questions.

Named a 2018 Starred Library by Library Journal (one of only six in the state!), we’re a well-loved staple to our users. Celebrating our 80th anniversary this year, we have an active community with a range of interests. Summer reading programs include craft nights, a community scavenger hunt, all-day gardening event, and a presentation on classic cars. We are a part of the community, and we strive to maintain that role to our patrons. An ideal candidate would be a quick-learner and eager to offer knowledgeable assistance to patrons as well as show initiative when planning programs, forming connections with our patrons, and contributing to collection development.

We are looking for…

Completion of an ALA accredited MLS program

Experience: prefer candidates who have worked/interned in a library at least one year

Enthusiasm: positive, public service oriented who greets customers with a smile

Provide comprehensive reader’s advisory, reference. and technology assistance

Assist Head of Adult Services with assigned tasks, including but not limited to: o Collection Development, with an emphasis on a well-rounded collection

supporting public requests and high demand items o Programming enrichment and lifelong learning opportunities o Connecting with community organizations to promote the library’s value

Seek out alternative funding, i.e. grants, awards

Pursue and participate in professional organizations, continuing education and development

POSITION: Part-Time Library Aide

REPORTS TO: Library Director

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform circulation desk duties.

Operate a variety of office equipment.

Respond to patron in-person and telephone requests.

Maintain statistics and data.

Input data into Library's computer systems.

Process Library materials.

General clerical/computer work; maintain files and records; process and distribute mail.

Assist in maintenance of supplies.

Cooperate as a team member with all Library staff in performing any professional or non-professional duty

essential to the achievement of efficient Library operations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of customer service principles and techniques.

Knowledge of basic operations of a library.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Operate modern office equipment, including computers.

Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance.

Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public in delivering services.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Proficient skills in English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Knowledge in Library automated systems. TLN system is advantageous.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Two years employment in a public library preferred.

Karen Wiedman, Rochester Hills Public Library Increasing their deposit collections from 6 to 7 made from withdrawn items from the library and bookmobile, exchanged every 4 months. Also have mini branches that are mostly run by resident volunteers (who do tasks like shelving) at different senior homes, starting a new one soon. Just had their annual volunteer luncheon to thank their many volunteers. Weather is improving so the Book Bike will be back on the road soon, already planning many

events with it. Currently offering two programs for ESL (American Culture and Speak English with Friends), and do a book group with the parents at a local elementary with a high population of ESL students. Brigette, The Library Network MAP was approved for another year, new destinations are being added. Also MI parks are celebrating 100 years so programs are being planned throughout the year. Carrie Ralston, Walled Lake City Library Public school system is big; children just participated in the Design a Bookmark program for the Summer Reading Program, pick 6 winners. Now have a presence in the Villa, a low income housing community. Were able to sign up a lot of residents within the community and were encouraged to start a book club with them. Has had talk of starting a Book Boat/Library-on-the-Lake on Walled Lake on the public docks, and is also supporting their little free libraries but have been suspended for 6 months. Sarah Roe, Taylor Community Library Two new assistant directors at the library. Hoping to start a home delivery program within a year. Throwing an art show with local middle schools and high school artists. Recently went to a VI Teacher seminar and Detroit VA hospital to present on Braille & Talking Books and general library services in their area. Currently gearing up for the Taylor Farmer’s Market, will have a table every other week. Taylor also is going Fine Free in July! Jane Haigh, Madison Heights Public Library Still working at Outreach and Home Delivery, experiencing some issues like cleanliness or people taking advantage of the program. Interested in learning more about libraries that do Books by Mail to solve some issues. Trying to start back up the evening book discussion after patron interest. Diane Betcher, Oxford Public Library Serve between 3 and 4 homebound patrons that get home delivery in person, generally participants are seniors that sign up for the service. Had successful Battle of the Books for youth and teens. Partnered with north Oakland museum and had a local artist gala and displayed 2 murals from the museum. Tara Scott, Canton Public Library Just finished First Grade roundup where all the kids from the public schools in the first grade come visit the library. Canton Front Porch program during the warm weather which draws people out. Farmer’s Market storytimes, and the Prize Patrol in the Canton community where they look for library yard signs and citizens get a swag bag if caught with a sign. Beth Sheridan, Orion Township Library Book bike will be out soon as the weather warms up. Have 8 little libraries in area parks and recently partnered with local artists to decorate them. Will do publicity on them once they’re finished. Changing computer lab into a makerspace which will have a machine for digitizing VHS to DVD.

Don Priest, Southgate Veterans Memorial Library Last month had the children’s art show with most of the local middle and elementary schools, was a big success! Plan to get the high school involved next year. Participating in Southgate’s Market in the Park which has theme days (like kids day, Christmas in July, etc.). Mick Howey, Royal Oak Public Library Just had a Director change. Gearing up for large-scale Summer Reading Challenge. Farmer’s Market wants the library presence but still working toward a collaboration that works for everyone. Started a seed library and it has proved very successful in its first year. Victoria Phelps, Brandon Township Public Library & Auburn Hills Public Library AUBN: Created an English Language Learning Resources brochure and other helpful brochures like activities to do in the area. Art show coming up at AUBN, local artists displaying their art in the library in the summer. BRND: In the early stages of starting a home delivery program. David Stokes, Milford Public Library Went Fine Free this year, patrons seem pleased! Resumed Sunday hours for the first time in years, open 1-5pm during the school year. Huron Valley Council for the Arts has been using library space to display their artwork, new work is hung every month with info on the artist. Added a facility back into their roster of visiting and taking items. Another new facility popped up in Milford (part dementia care, part senior apartments), may start delivering there depending on resident interest. 12:00 P.M. Adjournment

THE LIBRARY NETWORK BOARD PROCEEDINGS June 20, 2019

The regular meeting of The Library Network (TLN) Board was held on Thursday, June 20 at the Library Network office in Novi. Board Members present: Mark Wollenweber, Chair; Lois VanStipdonk, Vice-Chair; Stephen Harper, Treasurer; Reginald Williams, Joe Rozell, Arthur Woodford, Rita VanBrandeghen, and Debra Green. A quorum. Board Members Absent & Excused: Victor Cardenas. Additional attendees: Jim Pletz, TLN Director; Anne Neville, Rick Rosekrans, and Judith Kozakowski, TLN.

The Chair called the meeting to order at 10:32 a.m. 1. Call to audience

2. The Agenda. Motion by VanStipdonk, supported by Woodford, to approve the Agenda as

presented. Motion carried unanimously. 3 Approval of the Minutes. Motion by Woodford, supported by Rozell, to approve the minutes of

the May 16, 2019 meeting of the Board. Motion carried unanimously.

4. Communications & Announcements – CARL Shared System one-year update – Neville gave the one-year update of the CARL

Integrated Library System migration. The system is working, although it is not perfect. Delivery Statistics May 2019- Delivery bin statistics were reviewed. Novi remains at the top of

the list with 258 bins picked up from the library.

Steering Committee - Next meeting of the Committee will be Tuesday, July 9, preceding

the Annual Membership Picnic at Dodge Park in Commerce Township. Executive Committee – Next meeting of the Committee is June 27.

Finance/Real Estate Committee – None Human Resources Committee –The Committee met on May 16 to discuss impending

contract negotiations with TLN Administration. Negotiations with the AFSCME Bargaining Unit is scheduled to begin on July 22.

Job Summary: Working under the day-to-day supervision of the Technology Specialist, under the overall supervision of the Coordinator of Technology, this position is essential to the successful operation of the Library. Essential Duties and Responsibilities May Include: • Performs setup, configuration and monitoring tasks as directed on servers and workstations. • Responds to Equipment Problem reports, including: troubleshooting of PC and server-based

hardware; software problems and repairs; and setup of equipment. • Assists in monitoring internal and external network performance including Wi-Fi. • Assists Host Pages with Auditorium equipment and printers. • Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows and applications. • Computer Lab or Library experience preferred. • Hardware, software, network, printing or AV experience preferred. • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. • Ability to work independently once training is complete. • Ability to work as a member of the Technology Team. • Strong problem solving skills. • Detail oriented. • Positive service attitude. • Ability to promote and maintain effective relationships with the public and other staff. • Ability to understand and correctly interpret Library Policies and Procedures.
