Members of Baldwin High Schools stu-
dent council and Jr. ROTC, Community Work
Day and the Hawaii Lions Club District 50 took
part in volunteering at Mauis first Aloha `Aina
Earth Day on Jan. 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Aloha `Aina Earth Day was created to di-minish refuse, advocate recycling, and raise
funds for schools and various community or-
ganizations.
Caitlyn Inamasu, a student leader at
Baldwin High, requested the help when Ham-
merhead Metals Recycling held a grand open-
ing of its Maui facility. Baldwin High received
the proceeds from scrap metal and certain
other items collected. This event was held at Baldwin High
School and was sponsored by U.S. Rep Mazie K.
Hirono, Senate President Shan S. Tsutsui, Rep.
Gil Keith-Agaran, Mayor Alan Arakawa, and
Maui Council members Joe Pontanilla and Mike
Victorino.
During this event, volunteers collected
cardboard, newspapers, HI-5 containers, e-
waste (computers, ink jet and laser printers, faxmachines, etc.).

This Session, I have the privi-

comes great responsibility.Because of this transition, my

ter.
The Judiciary Committee will be
focusing on issues covering our state
court system, criminal and civil laws,
as well as campaign and election
laws.
I am also serving on the Con-
sumer Protection & Commerce Com-
mittee which deals with issues such
as taxation, real estate, insurance,
mortgage foreclosures, public utili-ties, professional licenses, and con-
sumer issues.
Although this Session carries
with it a heavy load, I am buoyed by
the opportunity to improve and sup-
port Maui in my new role. Once
again, Im looking forward to workingwith you to strengthen and improve
the quality of life in our community.

Beautiful flower arrangements and leis colored
the floor of the State House chamber on the morning
of Jan. 19 during the 26th
Legislatures opening day.
Democrats voted unanimously for Calvin Say as
Speaker of the House
Mr. Kamaki Kanahele, the director of the Native
Hawaiian Traditional Healing Center, provided an ecu-
menical invocation, which described the challenges
facing the state.
The $800M projected budget deficit permeated
the air, and Democratic Rep. Blake Oshiro provided his
insights on how the legislature should approach this
issue: being statesmen.
Rep. Oshiro stated that only the tourism industry
and construction can no longer be relied upon to bring
in income and supply jobs.
He urged that Hawaii needs to ensure its college
graduates get to stay home and make a good life for
themselves here in the islands.
Oshiro went on to say that as Hawaiis represen-
tatives, they need to be just and guided by truth and
reason, and these things will be their constant guide-
posts as they navigate through this coming Session.
In contrast to the start of the last session, enter-
tainment added a celebratory mood.
As Sean Naauao and Friends performed
Mustang Sally as an encore, Gov. Neil Abercrombie
jumped to his feet and pumped his fists during the
chorus to sing: Ride, Sally, ride.
The Moanalua String Ensemble under the direc-
tion of Mr. Elden Seta performed beautiful classical
pieces, as well as newer arrangements such as IDreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables
and Somewhere Out There from the Disney movie
An American Tail.
Overall, there was a call for unity as this Session
takes on the projected budget deficit and other priority
issues.
This Session is scheduled to end on Thursday,
May 5th.
Copier cartridges, cellular phones, telephone
books, all kinds of batteries, cooking oil, gently
used clothing and other households items such as
books, used eyeglasses and hearing aids were
also collected.
During the day people could also bring 3 in-
candescent bulbs to trade in for 3 CFL bulbs. Vol-
unteers also shredded personal documents and
collected food for the Maui Food Bank.
The organizers of this event hope to hold
similar events throughout Maui during the year,
and they invite the participation of other schoolsinterested in hosting the event.
