President/CEO James Taylor, COO Paul Kwauk and Provider

Association of Dental Plans (NADP) CONVERGE 2013
conference, September 9-12 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
CONVERGE 2013 is a nationally renowned conference that offers

fruitful networking relationship and an increase in FCL Dental’s
provider panel.
FCL Dental is very grateful and proud of
its continued success and growth. With
fall upon us and the approaching
Holiday Season we find it gratifying to
contribute to our community. Our
Corporate Counsel and V.P. of Human

CREDENTIALING TEAM
CREDENTIALING UPDATES : Credentialing by definition is the process by which an organization reviews and evaluates the qualification of
licensed independent practitioners to provide services to its members. Patient Safety is our number one
concern. Our company’s mission is to provide the highest level of care to our members; therefore we strive to
accomplish this by allowing only those providers who meet high standards to treat our members.
Helpful Hints to expedite the credentialing process:
Submit a complete application; please be advised that stamp signatures are not acceptable.
Submit a work history in a month/year format.
Submit proper credentialing documents: state license, DEA, State Controlled Substance License and
liability insurance.
If applicable provide an explanation of adverse sanctions.
Standard credentialing time frame is 30-90 days depending upon the application. If it is a “clean” application
without issues, sanctions or pending information it will be processed more rapidly.
FCL Dental’s credentialing team assisted the NAMSS 37th Educational Conference & Exhibition in
Hollywood, FL on September 21-25, 2013. Their participation in various educational and training classes
facilitated our ongoing effort to have the most qualified credentialing staff.

For many individuals going to the dentist is not a thrilling experience. There are many factors that may lead to the
patient’s dentist phobia. Although, it is impossible to compile an extensive list of all of the reasons why some people do
not like going to the dentist, here are the “Top Ten” reasons.
#1-The Needle!
Some adults and children never get over their fear of the needle. Patients that suffer from needle phobia struggle with
the idea of a dentist sticking a syringe in their gums or teeth. Therefore, careful handling of the needle is crucial when
dealing with fearful patients. It is preferable that the patient never sees the needle.
#2-The Pain!
Toothaches are a painful experience. Going to a place where more pain will be endured is unappealing to most. Patients
are concerned if their procedure will be painful and torturous. Proper pain management should be a vital part of any
dental procedure and readily available for the patients.
#3– The Anxiety!
The idea of going to the dentist is reason enough to increase someone’s blood pressure. The anxiety buildup is more
detrimental to the patient that the actual visit. Setting up an inviting and calming atmosphere is a great way to ease their
levels of anxiety.
#4– The Drill!
Auditory senses play an important part of a patient’s perception to dental procedures. Drills are usually loud, they vibrate
and suction all at the same time. Sounds are amplified in your mouth making them seem much worse than they actually
are.
#5– The Invasiveness!
It is never fun having another human digging around and stretching your mouth. Dentistry is invasive; dentists are
literally in your face. It is imperative for everyone in the office to establish a relationship with the patient and build trust.
This provides as a good foundation for the following visits.
#6– The Sounds & Smells!
Similar to hospitals, dental offices have a very distinctive antiseptic smell. Constant sanitation routines should help
disperse the odor and make the dental office more appealing to the patient.
#7– The Cost!
Dental work can sometimes be costly, especially if it is comprehensive procedure. Unfortunately some individuals do
not have dental insurance and it may be economically challenging to invest in oral care. Being able to offer various
payment options will increase patient retention and willingness to agree to a treatment plan.
#8– The Lectures!
The majority of dental patients go to the office for a toothache or an extraction. They already know that they won’t ace
the oral exam. It is best to omit lecturing or scolding them; there is no need to make them feel bad or guilty. Instead try
offering advice on how to improve their oral health and habits.
#9– The Poor Service!
Good service is imperative in the dental industry. Patients can feel resentful if they are treated indifferent or if they feel
they did not receive individual and personalized attention. A genuine smile can go a long way with customer service.
#10– The Bad Memories!
Who can forget bad childhood memories that haunt you endlessly? Any bad experience at the dentist can make a person
apprehensive about a future dental visit. Genuine effort to make the patients experience as enjoyable as possible is
beneficial.
