IMPORTANT DATES THIS TERM

Principals Report

We had an assembly this week and there was a showcase of some of the things that have been happening this term – the kids and the staff were blown away with what happens across our school because when you are in the middle of it you sometimes forget what is actually happening.

It isn’t going to get any slower for the remainder of the year with camps – this term we have two BUSH ADVENTURE CAMPS, YEAR 9 CAMP to Melbourne and next term we have YEAR 10 SNOW CAMP and YEAR 8 CENTRAL AUSTRALIA CAMP. This is a huge undertaking and something that we are pleased to be able to offer to students. There are 80 students going to Central Australia which is fantastic. I know I have said it many times but I would really like to acknowledge our staff for planning and organising these camps (it takes months to organise a camp) and then the preparedness to actually leave their families, sporting commitments to go on camp and be on duty 24/7. Our staff don’t get any time in lieu or additional money to attend these camps, they do this for the benefit of our students and to build positive relationships.

If you follow our Facebook page you will see photos of the many activities that have been provided for our students during Professional Practice Week. The kids and staff really enjoy having the opportunity to get guest speakers in, take the kids out on excursions and build positive relationships. All Victorian teaching staff are entitled to one day a term of professional practice and we decided that we would do this in our curriculum teams so that our staff could work together on things that matter and it would cause less disruptions to our students learning.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE is coming up in the first two weeks for Year 10s and it has been great to have so many students getting organised for this opportunity. We acknowledge the business community for supporting our students by being willing to provide them this opportunity.

YEAR 10 EXAMS are getting very close and we expect that our students take the time to prepare well for these important assessment tasks. Please make yourselves familiar with the Graduation Policy and the expectations for your students to graduate Year 10.

UNIFORM REMINDER – as it is cooling down again we remind you of our school uniform. Navy pants (any sort as long as there are no logos), school skirt and school tops. Our winter jackets are also a great option. Wearing a hoodie under a school shirt is NOT acceptable and students will be asked to take them off.

EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS FOR XUNO We are excited to announce a new version of the Xuno App has been released! Xuno recommends deleting any old Xuno apps from your device and then re-installing this new version from the App store. This will mean you will need to register your details and log in again. To do so, enter the school code 9sn0em and use your current user ID and password. This new version will enable you to see all notifications, message teachers, read news, see assessment tasks and grades, view attendance and timetables and student reports.

As part of this, we will begin a trial of the events/excursions online approval function. We are hoping that this is a convenient way to seek your parental permission and alleviate the last minute approval for excursions to enable our students to focus on their learning opportunities. You will begin to see some events/excursions on Xuno that require your approval. Built in to the approval is a SMS code that will go to the one Primary family member currently receiving absence SMS’s. Therefore it is vital that all of you details including emergency contacts are kept up to date. You can do this through the portal at any stage. Please note that you will still receive some paper permission notes that require your approval while we trial the online system. If you have any queries, please contact our friendly office staff who can assist you. Helen, Nat, Sue & Courtney - ISC OFFICE

It was a great way to finish the week after Naplan

PAGE 5 Educating For Success Year 8 Science Year 8s have been studying body systems this term in science. On Wednesday the 29th of May our budding anatomists were tasked with dissecting the hearts and kidneys from a sheep. The main event consisted with students investigating the digestive system of a rat! SRC Report Introducing Dircia, ISC Sponsor Child We would like to introduce our new sponsor child, Dircia, who we sponsoring on behalf of our student community. We will be using some of the funds from our various fundraising events throughout the year to assist with this. Nine year old Dircia lives in Timor-Leste, a country in south-east of Asia to the north of Australia. Dircia represents her community of Aileu. Houses are made of bamboo and mud with a metal roof and an earth floor. Dircia lives with her parents with the nearest water and health facilities 30 minutes’ walk away. It takes less than 30 minutes for Dircia to walk to school. Drinks and pizza sold on the last day of Term 1 raised $367.87 to help support Dircia. Keep an eye out for future fundraisers to help Dircia continue her education.

Esports PBL We are reaching the business end of the esports PBL sessions. A medal will be pocketed by the student who has the best overall results. One player has a clear lead over the others, but there are still plenty of points to be earned over the next few weeks. Henri Baldock currently leads Tetris with 18 wins. Tekken is tied up by both Gab Toutai and Alexi Karallis on 14 wins. Ethan Bray has a cushion of 2.5 seconds between him and the next best lap time in Forza. Friday promises to be action packed with the CS 5v5 winners being decided and the CS 2v2 sniper-only bracket commencing.

PAGE 7 Educating For Success Interschool Cross Country – Apex Park, May 22nd Our school produced some great individual efforts on what turned out to be a nice warm autumn day which was an ideal one for runners. We had 3 individual age group champions with Denholm Shaw, Ben Doherty and Jorja Delcastegne (pictured below with their medals) first over the line in the 13 Yrs Boys, 14 Yrs Girls and 15 Yrs Boys 3km runs respectively. We also had a number of runners finish in the top 10 for their age group. Students who finished in the top 10 are listed below. Pictured below are members of the team upon their return form the Cross-Country. Congratulations to all the competitors on how well you performed, and how well you represented the school. PAGE 8 Educating For Success Girls Interschool Football Girls Football was back in action again on Monday 20th May at Aerodrome Ovals, with I.S.C just enough numbers to fill both sides. The competition overall had improved from previous years, as women’s football continues to grow across Australia, but the Irymple girls were up for the challenge. The 7/8 team competed in two games across the day against St Josephs College and Merbein. This team was solely made up of year 7 students who tried their best in both games but unfortunately were unable to come away with a win. Better players on the day included Ella Pettigrew, Nia Fangaloka, Kyah Watson and Maddy Allen. The 9/10 girls played four games in total and got their day off to a fine start with a convincing win over Trinity. The highlight of the day came in the second game against Chaffey SC. The ISC team found themselves down by 30 points at half time after Chaffey booted 4 goals from the goal square in the first 10 minutes. The team regained their composure to have a massive fight back in the second half to win the game by two points. Unfortunately, winning run ended there though with Merbein and St Josephs being the two stronger sides this year. Better players on the day included Claudia Fangaloka, Julia Fraser, Jasmin Lilley, Sarah Reddy and Elyza Penny. Thank you to all who participated on the day and also a big thank you to Andre, Courtney and our student teachers Mr Brinsmead and Mr Rodi for helping coach and umpire on the day.

Eisteddfod Dear parents and guardians, Eisteddfod starts on the 6th June. All participants competing during school hours and registered by the school will be transported to and from their venue by a staff member and supervised by said member. Students participating after hours it will be your responsibility to transport to and from the venues. Students have to arrive 30 minutes before their competition section and meet with the relevant staff to register at the desk. Ms Deckett will arrange what choir members will be wearing. Speech and Drama students can elect to be in costume for their solo pieces and students participating in the ‘4 competitor scene will dress in black tops and black bottoms with black soft sole closed toe shoes. Parents and guardians, we welcome your attendance at the venues and tickets will be available at the doors on the day. This year we have 50 students involved in the 41st 2019 Mildura Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod Society aims to, encourage and foster the involvement of people of all ages in the performing arts, with particular emphasis on children and adolescents. Provide performance opportunities and feedback from specialists in all chosen fields of performance. The competition kicks off on the 6th June with the Speech and Drama, followed by music instrumental and dance ending on the 24th June. Students participating will be receiving their permission forms shortly and these have to be returned promptly, there will be disruptions to participating students timetable. Some students will be bused to and from the venue. Those competing in events after 7pm will have to find their own way to and from the venue. We wish all participants the very best of luck and to remember to have fun. Regards The Performing Arts Department.
