Dear Parents/Caregivers
I hope that everyone enjoyed the long weekend, making the most of extra time with family and friends.
REVIEWING OUR SCHOOL VISION Our present vision was written 12 years ago. We are reviewing our vision to ensure it reflects the changing world that our children are part of. We would appreciate your input in this process as you are an integral part of our school community. Could you please take the time to answer a short survey. Your responses along with those of staff and students, will help us to form the vision for our school. To access the survey, type in the following address (https://goo.gl/forms/FjvfwYbzBsEJ7Grw1) or go to the school website (www.easttaieri.school.nz) or click on the link in Facebook. The survey will be accessible until tonight.
COMMEMORATIVE TREE You will see that there is an addition to the wall at the Room 12 end of the Junior Block. The tree has been donated by Farra Engineering Ltd, of which John Whitaker, a past East Taieri School BOT Chairperson is Managing Director. Families are able to buy leaves which will be engraved with their names and dates attending East Taieri. If you know of past families who may be interested in purchasing a leaf, please pass this information onto them.
The cost of an engraved leaf will be $50.00. Please email Annette, [email protected], if you wish to purchase a leaf. Many thanks to Chris Hey who gave up his time during the weekend to attach the tree to the wall and has also offered to attach the leaves.

A STORY ABOUT THE STORM LAST WEEK
By Isabella Thomson - Room 12
Cold air and hot air mixes into
lightning. It turns into electricity
and goes “BOOM!” It is
terrifying. I was at home. I
heard it. I thought it was a
tornado. I told everybody to
duck, but it was only thunder
and lightning.

ICAS RESULTS
Over the last few months a number of children have been involved in the ICAS tests. The Kiwiana children are encouraged to push themselves out of their comfort
zones and to have a go. We have been very proud of some of the results that have been achieved. Special mention needs to go to the following children who received the high achievements of distinction, credit or merit. Distinction; Jessica McBrearty - maths and english Rosie Falcous - science Credit Jackson Smith - science, writing, maths Philippa King - english, maths Ben O’Connor - writing, spelling, english Caden Thompson - spelling Lily Falcous - english Kobe Watt - english Rosie Falcous - english, maths Courtney Smith (Year 2) - Year 3 maths Zack Gallagher - maths Merit Aidan Seyb - digital technologies Ben O’Connor - science, maths Philippa King - science Jackson Smith - spelling Hunter Compton - maths Kobe Watt - maths Jenny Petegem-Thach - maths Josh Jones - maths KIWIANA MATHS EXPO The Kiwiana maths children finished their learning about angles and triangles last Thursday, with an expo in the library and Owhiro Centre. Each child invited some extra children and had to present the things they had learnt. The Senior children had specific criteria and tasks they had to complete. One of the main tasks was to make an interactive presentation to share. The quality and amount of effort that the children put into their learning was outstanding. The choices they made about how to make things interactive was interesting! We had games, google slides, interactive movies, 3D objects made out of wood, hanging objects, mini shows, puzzles to explore, quizzes, photos and much more! The Junior group showed how their confidence and knowledge had grown as they presented to large groups of Senior children. Well done Kiwiana children!
IT DONATION
At East Taieri we are working towards having a 1:1 student to device ratio. We believe that devices and technology play an integral role in our children’s future and we strive to provide the best possible access to these tools. Last year we introduced an IT Donation to the school fees. So far this year we have raised just over $2800. As you can see in the thermometer our current student to device ratio is 1:3. We would like to thank all those who have contributed towards helping us achieve this goal.
SPORT AND CULTURAL GROUP FUNDING
East Taieri Home and School Committee and Parents supporting our endeavours have created a small surplus for 2016. With this surplus we would like to support Sports and Cultural groups of East Taieri School and, are now inviting groups to apply for funding. Please apply in writing with the name of the group, a quick explanation of the equipment needed, a summary of costs and your contact details. If successful, the money will need to be spent and receipts returned before December 5th. Please be aware that you may not receive all the funding asked for depending on the number of applications we receive. The next Home & School meeting is tomorrow night, October 26th. Envelopes should be clearly named for Home and School Committee and given to Annette in the office. Good luck!
