Speaking on behalf of the Federação Moçambicana de Empreiteiros (Mozambican Federation of Businessmen - FME) and the CTA, Agostinho Vuma, the president of the FME, expressed his gratitude to the Turkish ambassador, Ms Aylin Tashan, for her extraordinary work in bringing a number of business delegations to the country throughout the years and enabling this type of exchange. During his presentation, Godinho Alves, the deputy director of the Investment Promotion Centre (CPI), noted that Mozambique has many bilateral trade agreements with countries such as France, Germany and South Africa. He listed the advantages of the country for business investment such as the sea connections with various destinations, natural resources, a stable legal framework, protection of assets, tax benefits and its workforce. The CTA has announced that Daniel Jaime Dima was elected president of the Business Council of Gaza province on Feb. 19. The election of this member of the CTA follows the deliberation of resolution no. 29 of the CTA Board of November 2015 revoking the mandates of the presidents and vice presidents of the Provincial Business Councils (CEPs). In this context, Dima decided to compete for the post of president for the Gaza CEP and has been victorious of its scrutiny.

But he couldn’t take up the office for which he was elected due to the incompatibility of functions as a member of a governing body of the CTA council tax body. He now resigns with immediate effect to take over as president of the Business Council of Gaza Province.

The growth of international trade and the growing threats to the security of the international movement of goods have forced customs authorities to change their traditional focus of customs duty collection to ensure the facilitation of international trade and enhanced security. Recognizing this trend, the World Customs Organisation (WCO) has prepared a framework of standards for Security and Facilitation of Global Trade (SAFE). Several patterns are included in this framework that may assist customs authorities in meeting these new challenges. The development and implementation of an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) is an essential part of SAFE. In November last year, the first AEO workshop was realized. Following this work, the CTA, the Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique (CDA) and the Directorate General of Customs of the Tax Authority of Mozambique (AT/DGA), with the financing of the USAID’s Support Program for Economic and Enterprise Development (SPEED) have co-organized two events on the AEO:

- March 2 and 3 ( 8 a.m.-3 p.m.) - training workshop on the AEO with the following participants: AT/DGA, the Chamber of Customs Agents, Authorized Economic Operators and other stakeholders;

- March 4 (8 a.m.-12 p.m.) - workshop on Authorized Economic Operator with customs agents.

All events will take place at the Hotel VIP in Maputo and will be guided by the international consultant Tom Hempenstall. He has over 35 years of experience in trade facilitation, reform and modernization of customs procedures, training of administrative and technical officers in Authorized Economic Operators at an international level. He also has experience in the launch and operationalization of AEOs internationally. Those interested are invited to sign up and indicate the workshop in which they would like to participate. Applications must be submitted to the following contact:

The Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI) launched this month a promotion campaign of VISA cards and BCI Point of Sales (POS), under a partnership with VISA International, associated with the Olympic Games Rio 2016. This large global multi-sport event, which takes place every four years, is now in the 28th edition of the modern era and the next games will be held on Aug. 5-21 of the current year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The campaign lasts five months, beginning on Feb. 1 and ending on June 30. Private customers who make payments in POS in Mozambique through debit cards, credit and the prepaid VISA BCI and customers possessing a BCI POS which accepts payments

through any VISA cards (national or international) are entered in a draw for valuable prizes including travel packages to Rio de Janeiro, televisions and money loaded on “tako pago” card. In recent years, the BCI has strengthened its position in Mozambique and the southern hemisphere as a preferred partner of VISA by conducting campaigns associated with major events sponsored by this company, a world leader in payment systems. In 2014, under this partnership, the BCI took 16 clients to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in the capacity of the official bank in Mozambique.
