COME TO THE TABLERemembering what it means to be United Methodist

Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in room 97Begins January 16th // Led by Teresa Edwards

The South Georgia Annual Conference has put together an opportunity for us to remember what it means to be a United Methodist. This 6 week class will include video, scripture, and discussion around topics that are as pertinent today as they were when Wesley taught and wrote about them in his lifetime. As the church approaches many important decisions in the year to come, let us remember together who and whose we are.

CELEBRATION OF DISCIPLINEThe Path to Spiritual Growth

Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in room 97Begins January 16 // Led by Teresa Edwards

What better aim in a new year than to set out on the path of spiritual growth with fresh energy.

So much of who we are, what we become, and the relationships in our life are born out of the things we do daily to nourish ourselves, our relationship with God and with those in our world. This classic book will be our guide as we set out on the path together, seeking to grow deep and wide in our faith. Our ten week adventure promises to expand your understanding of Christ and deepen your connection with the Holy One.

THE BOOK OF JAMESWednesdays from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in room 125Begins January 16th // 8 week study (2 breaks on January 30 & March 6) // Led by Baxter Hurley

This is a quick read, but it can be painful at times. The author doesn’t tread lightly around diffi cult and sensitive topics. In fact, it is accurate to say that James aims for them because these are topics that Christians often neglect. James tackles the tongue, wisdom, prayer,

suffering, sin, wealth, poverty and privilege. His biting critique of many of the problems of his day apply equally in our modern world.

I invite you to join me as we spend 8 weeks exploring this important book on Christian living.

DON’T MOM ALONESundays at 5:00 p.m.Begins on January 13th // Led by Jessi Timmerman

Connect with other Moms as we jump into the Don’t Mom Alone podcast. Each week we’ll listen to and discuss one episode. These are the 6 episodes we’ll review: Practice Self Compassion, Rest for the Exhausted Mom, Set Free from Shame, Share Messy Stories, Manage Your Life, How God Personally Pursues. Each episode is thought provoking, encouraging and challenging. This is an invitation for you to grow in your relationship with the Lord, with your kids and your friends. Childcare will be provided. To register email [email protected]

THE TOTAL MONEY MAKEOVER BOOK CLUBSundays at 11:00 am in room 99Begins on January 13 // 6 week studyLed by Tammy Humphries

Do you have too much month at the end of your money? Are fi nances causing stress in your life and relationships? Has holiday spending put you in a January hole? It’s time to stop living paycheck to (almost) paycheck. It’s time to get serious about your fi nancial health. The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey is the tool to help you get your fi nances on track in the New Year. This group will meet for 6 weeks to engage with the book, encourage one another, share successes, struggles, and money saving tips. Cost for the book is $12. Register through Realm, online, or at the church.

MISSIONS OFFERINGby Sherie MosesLoaves and Fishes Ministry is the focus of our Missions offering for the month of January. It originally started in 1967 as a faith based non-profi t in the basement of Tattnall Square Presbyterian Church as a food and clothing ministry. It has now morphed into an organization that assists individuals and families as they transition from learned helplessness to learned resourcefulness. From their offi ce at 651 MLK Jr. Blvd. Loaves and Fishes helps with the necessities of daily living we might expect, like food, clothing, medicine, laundry, showers, diapers, but they also help with ID’s and birth certifi cates.Something like a birth certifi cate is so simple for us, but imagine….without your birth certifi cate, you cannot get an ID and without an ID, you cannot get a job, you cannot cash a check, you cannot go to the doctor, you cannot get a place to live… Without an ID, you cannot be a part of modern society.

If you have renewed your Driver’s license lately, you know that it involves bringing several documents to prove who you are and where you live. And don’t forget the $32 you have to pay for the new 8 year licenses. It is quite a task even if all your documents

We want to thank everyone who gave to Beyond Backpack Fund and are so grateful for the love and commitment our church family shows to these schools. You truly are the hands and feet of Jesus.

We are currently serving 1,878 children and have had to inform schools they can not add anymore children. The Food Bank is low on food for Backpack. We are in desperate need of protein and fruit cups or fruit gummies. Examples of Protein are: Vienna sausage, peanut butter crackers, individual small serving of Mac n cheese and small bags of peanuts. Don’t forget to drop off plastic bags to the mission cabinet. Thank you for your support and we ask for continued prayers for availability of food to feed our hungry children.

are safely stored in a box in the closet. Now what if you didn’t have a closet? What if the only way to keep up with your birth certifi cate was to keep it in your wallet or your pocket? Now imagine your wallet is stolen and with it your ID, birth certifi cate and Social Security card. How in the world would you begin to get them all back?Especially if you have no money and no transportation.

At Loaves and Fishes they help their clients navigate the diffi cult road back to having a valid ID that is needed for so many essential parts of being a productive member of society. Besides providing the funds needed to get a birth certifi cate and ID they also help them track down all the documents and applications that they need. This is the fi rst step that many must take to get back on the road to self-suffi ciency.

For over 50 years Loaves and Fishes has been ministering to the people of Middle Georgia.Without help from donors and volunteers, none of this would be possible. By supporting their mission, you are taking a stand against the epidemic of homelessness in our region. Contact them at (478) 741-1007 or loavesand-fi shesministry.org.

OPERATION CHRISTMASCHILD by Lynn McMullenWe had a great time over the holiday season volunteering in the Operation Christmas Child processing center! Because they had so many volunteers, we were not needed for our second reservation, but that means we get an earlier opportunity to sign up for next year!

I hope you have been taking advantage of the Christmas clearance sales to stock up on items for your 2019 shoeboxes. Some of my favorite items to include are: bandanas (101 uses!), school supplies & crayons, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, sewing kits, clothing items, stuffed animals and toys. Or you may decide to save some money each month to pay the shipping for the number of shoeboxes you want to fi ll. Above all, remember that the children who receive shoeboxes and all the volunteers that get boxes from here to there need and appreciate your continued prayers.

Special ThanksYou may have noticed the new Crismons on the Crismon tree in the sanctuary. These special ornaments each remind us of Christ and the gift of this special season. Please help me in extending a special, gigantic, heartfelt thank you to Barbara Coon, Ginger Cowart, Margaret Ann and Hayden Hunt who created these lovely ornaments with their hands, hearts and talent. As the crismons grace our tree for years to come, we will think of all of you with gratitude.

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING AND PIZZA PARTY!All Forest Hills UMC members are invited to our Church Council Meeting on Sunday January 13, 2019, 5pm at the Ridge Campus Fellowship Hall.

DAD JOKESMy wife and I often laugh about how competitive we are.

But I laugh more.

My wife just told me to put the toilet seat down. I don’t know why I was carrying it around in the fi rst place.

What do you call a snowman with a 6 pack? An abdominal snowman.

I was going to write a time traveling joke but you guys didn’t like it.

Submit your favorite dad jokes for next month's newsletter [email protected].

What is Spiritual Direction? What is Spiritual Direction?Sometimes we get to a place in our relationship with God where we are hungry for more, for depth, for richer understanding of who God is and how God is active in our everyday life and in the world. Spiritual direction is such a place to explore the presence and movement of Christ in our story, our varied experiences, our thinking, our relationships and our daily living. Through sharing, listening, prayer and silence, the Holy Spirit speaks into our lives in fresh ways.

Who is a Spiritual Director?Who is a Spiritual Director?A spiritual director is a person who is called, trained and has experienced the grace of God through spiritual direction him/herself. “A spiritual director listens with one ear to God and the other to the directee, always encouraging the directee to recognize where God can be found throughout the journey.”(Spiritual Disciplines Handbook) Your spiritual director will listen to you, pray for you, and offer you a safe and sacred place to seek and grow in your life with Christ.

Is God calling me to Spiritual Direction? Is God calling me to Spiritual Direction?Of course only you can answer that question. You might want to refl ect on your faith life asking questions such as: Am I hungry for more in my life with God? Do I feel stuck in a dry/desert place in my spiritual life? Are there dreams in my heart that God planted that I am ready to consider and pursue? Do I face situations and circumstances in my life where having someone listen and hold me in prayer would be a benefi t to me? Most of all, if you think spiritual direction might be for you: Pray About It! If you have questions or would like to know more about spiritual direction, please contact me by phone (477-1161) or by e-mail([email protected]). I would love to talk to you further. May God bless each and every one as we grow in grace and faith together.
