Clements Hall Local History Group

Our new book Shadows in the Bricks: the old

shops of South Bank in York has been

published. Over 100 buildings were used as shops

and businesses in South Bank, between

Southlands Road and Campleshon Road, across to

Finsbury Street. While most are now gone, some

still trade successfully. The book draws on work by

local residents plus our own research, using

directories, the census and newspapers over the

last century. It highlights a sense of community still

alive in the area.

The book has over 100 photographs and is on sale

in local shops and from Clements Hall, at £7, an

excellent present for friends and family. Stockists

include Fred's Bakery, Tranquil Hair & Beauty, The

Corner Barbershop, D & K Stores, Tower Vets, the

Winning Post, Pextons, Frankie and Johnny's

Cookshop and Cameron Beaumont Opticians.

Do you love books and film? Help us create a book club for SBCC Members have suggested a book club for SBCC on several occasions. Our spring 2020 season’s exploration of the connections between the worlds of writing and cinema gives an excellent opportunity to pilot a group, with one meeting suggested in the first few months of the year. Interested in finding out more or getting involved? To get this off the ground, we need you! We are looking for people interested in getting involved:

Two or three volunteers to help select a book, promote the group and encourage

discussion at its first meeting

Readers keen to join If you would like to volunteer to help organise this, find out more or simply take part if it takes off, please talk to the box office, email [email protected] or call 01904 466086.

Since its earliest days, cinema has been inspired by literature and writing and so

this spring we take the influence of the written word as the starting point for a varied

programme. As ever, we’re a relaxed and friendly venue with licensed bar. Doors

and bar open at 7.30pm, films start at 8pm and there’s a short interval. Admission:

£3 for members, £4 non-members, £3 under-18s when accompanied by an adult

(please check film certification). Membership (Jan-Dec): £5.

10 January Colette 15 (2018 Wash Westmoreland) 111 mins Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game, Atonement) brings depth to the true story of French author, Colette, whose work was appropriated by her husband, played by Dominic West (Testament of Youth, The Wire). The film charts Colette’s challenge to social mores as she asserts her own authorial voice and upends gender norms. While set against the sumptuous background of belle epoque Paris, the film nevertheless retains a sense of modernity in its evocation of Colette’s fascinating early life.

24 January The American Friend (Der amerikanische Freund) 12 (1977 Wim Wenders) 125 mins Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, Ripley’s Game, Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider) takes on perhaps her most famous character, Tom Ripley, as he moves from art forgery to murder plots. Wim Wenders’ (Wings of Desire, Paris Texas) direction creates a film which is sure to be equally popular at SBCC as other works we’ve shown by this major figure of German cinema, particularly when the cast includes Bruno Ganz (Downfall) and Hollywood director Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause).

7 February His Girl Friday U (1940 Howard Hawks) 92 mins Delight in one of the greatest film comedies, as fresh today as when first screened eighty years ago. At the height of their powers, Cary Grant (North by Northwest, Bringing up Baby) and Rosalind Russell (Sister Kenny, Gypsy) play divorced journalists who just can’t quite make up their minds to go their separate ways. The laughs keep coming at breakneck speed in the crackling repartee etween these Hollywood legends. What better company could we wish for on a cold February evening?

21 February Caesar Must Die (Cesare deve morire) 12A (2012 Paolo and Vittorio Taviani) 87 mins Turning to more serious fare, Caesar Must Die was nominated for multiple awards and won Berlin’s Golden Bear for its gripping interpretation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Shot in stark black and white, inmates at a high-security prison in Rome rehearse and perform the gritty play in a production from the radical and passionate leading proponents of Italian cinema, brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (Padre Padrone, The Night of San Lorenzo).

6 March The Kite Runner 12A (2007 Marc Forster) 128mins We’re pleased to bring tonight’s film, based on Khaled Hosseini’s bestselling novel, to SBCC in a joint screening with York Fair Trade Forum. The picture tells the story of two boys growing up in 1970s Afghanistan who fly kites together when events intervene. They go their separate ways only to find their paths again converging as adults, bringing the opportunity for redemption. The film captures the beauty of flying kites and creates a moving portrayal of the ups and downs of friendship.

The screening will be proceeded by a talk on York and its status as a Fairtrade city at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). A fair trade ticket will be on sale (£4 SBCC members, £5 non-members) to include a donation to York Fair Trade Forum. For those just able to make the film, doors will re-open at 8pm and the film begin once everyone has taken their seats. Tickets at the usual entry will also be available. 20 March Rififi (Du rififi chez les hommes) 12 (1955 Jules Dassin) 118 mins Having enjoyed Double Indemnity (1944) last season, we’ve chosen a French film noir for the spring. Blacklisted in Hollywood, director Jules Dassin (The Naked City, Night and the City), moved to France and chose a book by Auguste Le Breton as the basis for this winner of a Palme d’Or at Cannes. This quintessential noir thriller transposes the glorious light and shadows of Dassin’s earlier work to the streets of Paris. Be sure to make a date with this little seen French treasure! 3 April Call Me by Your Name 15 (2017 Luca Guadagnino) 132 mins The season draws to a close with a film which regularly came top of 2017’s best films and earned James Ivory (A Room with a View, Howard’s End) an American Academy Award for best adapted screenplay along with many other prizes and nominations. Transporting us to 1980s Italy, Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird) gives an excellent performance as a 17-year-old finding first love with his father’s older assistant, played by Armie Hammer (The Man from UNCLE), also on terrific form.

This film will be preceded by our AGM. Doors open at 6.45pm for our AGM which will begin at 7pm. The AGM is open to all, although only members can vote; membership is available on the night.
