PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE school we are working with our bus companies to provide the best opportunity for all students living in the Bowraville area to attend their local school.

Canteen

Due to a later start to the morning we will be opening the canteen each morning next year and providing a breakfast service. We are hoping to start this in Term 3 this year so watch this space. We are finding that a number of children are coming to school without breakfast and also a growing trend of students stopping in at shops and purchasing food in the morning. Not all their choices are healthy. I am hoping to engage with Mid Coast Local Health District to do an incursion for all students on sugar in common drinks and foods.

Due to the bell changes in 2021 we will be calling our first break Lunch and our second Break Afternoon Tea as a survey of staff and students found most were eating their main meal in the first break. The new bell times will likely push the second break back to at least 1:30pm so we anticipate that students will eat their lunch at the first break. The canteen will be open for the first break only.

Student Support Officer

We are very excited that we have been fortunate to have been awarded a Student Support worker as part of our staffing for 2021. Student Support Officers support the implementation of the school’s whole-of-school approach to wellbeing, helping students develop social and emotional skills through targeted strengths-based programs and strategies that build resilience, coping skills and positive relationships. We are hoping to appoint the SSO for the remainder of the year as a school funded position.

Bowraville Education Campus

Next year we will launch the Bowraville Education Campus (BEC) which is an extension to the school and will allow us to deliver Stage 6 courses matched to workplace goals and aspirations in an Academy style format. We will extend our enrolments for all members of the community wishing to upskill themselves and offer pathways to Certificate courses in Hospitality and Primary Industries, as well as possibly construction, Sports Coach/Fitness and Business Services depending on demand. This process is still in its infancy but we are very excited about it. If you know a 20 something or even a 50 something person out there looking for real employability skills look out for future announcements.

Enrol Now!

Kindergarten enrolments are already coming in and the transition program is planned for 2021. We will soon open enrolments for the BEC as well. Watch this space, Bowraville Central School is going from strength to strength.

Best Regards,

Dave Taylor

Some big changes are planned for 2021 and I wanted to start the conversation with the community.

Building Projects

We are starting to plan for the 150th Anniversary in a few years and by that time the school is going to look amazing. This year alone we have invested over $1 million in infrastructure and technology upgrades funded through a variety of sources including new ramping at the front of the school, upgrade of front office and side gate with fob entry, exterior painting of all buildings, interactive concrete artwork in Area 1, a new deck in N Block, access toilets in I Block, new basketball backboards in the COLA, new smartboards and smart TV’s across the school including the exterior screen outside the staffroom and a new MC Playground including electronic fob entry. We still have several major projects to complete this year including installation of the Laser cutter in TAS, a huge new deck outside the Food Technology room to become senior student/Hospitality space, mural and tile displays, upgrade of Deputy Principal office, installation of security cameras, garden bed upgrades and tree planting, and construction of new Bus Bay. Once this is all complete we will have an open day and invite the community in for a look.

Security Cameras

When we had the front office upgrade which included rewiring all data and the installation of the electronic fob entry to the side gate this meant that we had the capacity to upgrade and include additional security cameras. We have made the decision to do this and will be installing an additional 12 cameras in the playground. These cameras are designed to prevent anti-social behaviour not record it. They will be clearly signposted and students will be informed when they are activated. The hope is that knowing they are on camera might encourage students to behave in a more socially acceptable way including litter, graffiti and violence. In an upcoming newsletter I will post the location of these cameras but they will basically be in all playground areas.

Bell Times

We have made the decision to try to align the Bell Times between Primary and Secondary. I am very aware that the early finish for Primary makes things difficult for some parents collecting siblings if one is in Primary and the other is in Secondary. For this reason, next year the whole school will finish at 3:20. There will be a slightly staggered start in the morning and we will be offering additional activities to make the morning session more conducive to preparing students to be Ready to Learn which has been our focus through PBL. I will give more detail and a draft timetable in a future newsletter.

Buses

Buses are not changing however there will be information in this newsletter re some changes to route numbers etc. As a

SCHOOL NEWS

SMILE NewsHow is it going? It is going great but the SMILE program has had a rough start due to COVID-19. It is a great way for the junior primary students and the Year 10 to get together and have fun. The SMILE program is all about Year 10 being mentors for the younger students and helps form bonds and friendships. In SMILE the students have done multiple activities using teamwork. They have played ‘bullrush’, sport and many physical activities. They also read with their partners and do creative arts. The benefits of the SMILE program include working as a team, mentorship for younger students, friendships, trust, special bonds and having fun. Last week Year 10 spent time playing different types of board games.Elle Keniar

BCS STAFF IN FOCUS

Name: Jennifer ArgentWent to School at: BCS Kinder to Year 10, Macksville High School Year 11 - 12.Experience/Background: Started as a casual at BCS in 1998 in Admin, Macksville High School from 2001 - 2007, Nambucca Heads Public School from 2007-2019 and now back to BCS July 2019.Position/Role at BCS: School Administration Manager.Interests: Family, gardening, live music and travel.Other comments: I attended BCS for my K-10 schooling. My four sons also attended BCS. I have lived and worked in the Nambucca Valley all my life and feel very lucky to have done so. I have literally done the full circle of the valley during my career and feel very privileged to have the opportunity to be back at BCS where it all began. For a student, BCS provides a wonderful opportunity to be involved in many sporting teams and school and community events that are not available to all students in other schools simply because of the number of students. This aspect alone is very unique to BCS and the benefits are many not the least building confidence and many friendships with people that you may not ordinarily have met. There have been many changes to the school grounds and buildings since I attended school here. It is quite strange to have my office in what was the Principal’s residence when I attended BCS. We also had our athletics carnivals at the school in area 3 and 4 which now have a gym,

canteen, T block and demountable on the finish line. I also loved singing the Bowra chant on the bus everytime we returned from a sporting trip or excursion. BOWRA ! BOWRA ! YEAH YEAH YEAH B O W R A Bowra !!!I love our valley and love being back at Bowraville Central School.

wonderful friends throughout my life and am surrounded by beautiful people. Memories of BCS:So many good memories! Skipping out of school to go swimming at the creek on the last day and getting called to the Principal’s office. Trying to do Orienteering and getting lost immediately so we just sat down and talked for ages. Beach walking for sport (and sitting on the beach), fishing for sport (and sitting on the beach). When the school first got the canoes and going canoeing for sport as much as we could. Sport carnivals - Go Cedar! I remember organising the grant from the government for the shelter shed that is down the back oval. The smell of the blue ink they used to copy worksheets (before computers). Kindergarten getting it’s first computers. The school fetes where you could dunk a teacher in water. Nutella from the tuck shop. The computer teacher that let us play LAN games in the computer room (in high school) at lunch and its one of the reasons I got into IT. So many wonderful teachers! Mrs Singleton, Mrs Wood, Mrs Ottaway, Mrs Chambers, Mr Urquhart, Mrs Joske, Mr Glennon, and Mrs Derkenne (to name a few). (Looking back, I wish we were a bit nicer to some of our teachers, sorry about that!) Most importantly my friends that I will have for a lifetime. Other comments:There is a famous quote “If you do what you love you will never work a day in your life”. Find what you like doing and move in that direction. If your grades are not great there are always other options for getting into uni. BCS allowed me freedoms and experiences that I might not have gotten in a larger school. I feel really grateful to have attended BCS and to have had the education that I did.

BCS ALUMNI - OUR PAST STUDENTS

Name: Claire RichardsonYears at BCS: Kindergarten to Year 10Where I went and what I did when I left BCS: As BCS only went to Year 10. I completed my HSC at CHEC in Coffs. I moved to Brisbane, unsure what I wanted to do. My UAI wasn’t enough to get into much at uni so I completed a Diploma of Multimedia (IT) at TAFE. I realised if I continued study I could avoid having to get a real job, so I went to QUT and did a Bachelor of IT. While studying I worked part time in a kebab shop. My favourite job was peeling onions. Once the tears stopped it was an easy way to earn money! Before I completed my degree I got a consultancy job and became a web developer for Suncorp. I found this too isolating as I needed to talk to people. It was around this time I graduated with my Bachelors degree. I became an IT Business Analyst. I’ve worked for many large companies including Telstra, Village Roadshow Theme Parks, Foxtel and Flight Centre as a Business Analyst and Project Manager. I love my work and have so much fun. I’ve been sent all around Australia and overseas. Recently for work we went on a super yacht for the day and two days later I got flown to Bali for a 4 day holiday (all expenses paid)! What am I doing now:In 2012 I had my son and am a single mum. I recently bought a house on the Gold Coast and couldn’t be happier. I have made

The Variety ‘Tech 4 School’ laptop grant is still open. Applications close on 30th June so there is still time to apply and maybe secure a laptop for your child. If you need any help please contact me at the school and I can do the application on your behalf. Please read the guidelines and submit your application here: https://varietynsw.acemlna.com/lt.php?s=b8ce0dde3e706397377c3239dd4938b&i=224A294A14A3230Or google variety.org.au and search NSW/ACT, grants currently available, Tech 4 School. You can also find the link on our school Facebook page. For my role as CLO I take quite a few photos of our students for newsletters etc. Lately I’m finding it difficult when taking group shots to have everyone in school uniform. It would be great to see every student be in uniform at all times. Uniforms are on sale in our school office and we also have a number of second hand items for sale at a lower cost.

TALKING TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT RACISM1. START THE CONVERSATION

Don’t wait for your child to bring it up. It can be uncomfortable but if you don’t talk about it at all you’re ignoring the whole issue and that is a problem. If you don’t know the answers to their questions, don’t be afraid to learn with them!

2. EXPOSE THEM TO CULTURALLY DIVERSE CONTENT

Read them stories with characters of all ethnicities, cultures and races. Show them movies about cultures and diversity. If you have older children show them movies about prejudice and racism (that are age appropriate) and have conversations about them!

3. LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Our children are always watching us, watching our behaviours, how we treat others, even how we look at others. Be an example, help those in need, be an advocate and an ally. This may make you look at your own biases and realise that you need to change as well. No better time than the present! Teach your children to treat others the way they want to be treated.
