In the coming months you will see a number of changes to the exterior of the building, including double glazing to the windows on the front of the property together with a new board at the entrance to reflect the Beritaz brand. A new Avonwood Manor website will be launched in the coming weeks. We have been overwhelmed by the support of residents and their families during this period of transition and we are very much looking forward to working with you all in the future. Update from Beritaz Care’s Director

It has been a busy few months at Avonwood since the completion of the purchase in February 16. Beritaz is pleased with the acquisition and there has been significant improvement coupled with a good deal of activity. There have been a number of successes: · The Beritaz Quality Assurance Process and Methodology has been introduced

· Care Plans have been reviewed and updated

· Some changes have been made to strengthen the staff team

· A new telephone system has been introduced, with a direct line to the home for relatives

· The heating system has been upgraded

· Residents’ rooms have been improved and this upgrading process will continue over the coming months

Carehome.co.ukMost of us now check sites such Trivago and Tripadvisor before booking hotels. We look for feedback and then usually make a decision based on the comments. The care industry is now heading this way. People are looking for feedback on carehome.co.uk as part of their research before deciding on a care home for their loved one.

There are several reviews for Avonwood Manor on carehome.co.uk and we would very much like to appear in the top five homes for Poole. You’ll see that our overall scores are based on a variety of measures including: staff, activities, food and drink etc. All of these contribute to the rating. As you would expect, maximum scores are achieved for an “excellent” in any of the categories, anything less reduces the points awarded.

If you would like to give us feedback you can do this via the carehome.co.uk website or you can use the card with this newsletter, complete and pop in the post (postage is free). If you’d like more cards, just ask the team.

Welcome to the first edition of our Relatives’ and Residents’ Newsletter. It’s been a busy start of 2016 for everyone especially since our new owners, Beritaz Care, took over the reins at Avonwood in February. Beritaz Care is a family owned group with extensive experience and a reputation for providing quality care for older people.

We have now been part of Beritaz Care for six months; the support of the residents, their families and friends, the Beritaz team together with all the Avonwood Manor staff team has been amazing.

We’ve received some lovely comments from relatives and also a visiting professional which I must share with you:

Staff SnippetsAs you will probably know we’re excited about our two weddings, Becki who married in July and Ionella who is due to tie the knot in August.

At Beritaz Care we work hard to develop our staff and support them in their career progression. Sue Knights has now been promoted and she is Assistant to the Manager (ATM).

Many of you will have met Darren Gillett who has taken on the role of handyperson and has been busy round the building ensuring it looks its best.

We also welcomed Boyan Panayotova, a Registered Nurse who has joined our night team. Alina Firu and Irina Bucuresteanu have recently joined our care team.

We extend a very warm welcome to all of them and hope that they will have a rewarding career with Avonwood Manor and the Beritaz Care Group.

We said goodbye to our administrator Paula Matthews as well as to Russell Hawkins and Tina Ravel. We wish them well in their new jobs.

We’re unable to provide accommodation for new staff, but we are able to help find accommodation if necessary.

Staff Member of the Month - June

Dawn Flemming was the June staff member of the month. She’s been with Avonwood Manor for five years and the award recognized her continued high standard of care and attention to residents. She was singled out in comments made by a recently bereaved family for the care she delivered.

Queen’s BirthdayCelebrations for the Queen’s Birthday took place in June. Even though the weather wasn’t kind, we managed some lovely old fashioned patriotic celebrations.

Avonwood Photography DayWe had an exciting day for residents and staff alike when a professional photographer visited for the day to take some images of the home both inside and out, as well as residents, relatives and the staff team. The weather was kind to us on the day so the images show just how beautiful Avonwood is – the garden looked magnificent and the newly renovated water feature was a particular star. These images will be used in our new brochure and website – there’s a sneak preview throughout this newsletter.

Cheffing Up A StormSince the retirement of Joe we’re delighted that Graham Miller has now settled in; the team is working well and I hope that you have tasted the results.

Nurses RegistrationAll registered general nurses (RGN for short) are required to maintain their registration in order to continue to practise. This had been a simple process whereby every three years they made a payment and continued registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC for short). Each nurse has a unique PIN number. From April 2016 there is a new process for renewing their registration, it is called revalidation.

What is Revalidation?It is a process that allows nurses to maintain their registration with NMC by demonstrating continued ability to practise safely and effectively and to ensure continued training throughout their career. This was introduced to raise awareness and standards to encourage nurses to stay up to date within the profession.

How do Nurses Revalidate?As part of this process nurses are required to submit information to the NMC such as: written reflective practice and discussion, practice related feedback, 35 hours of professional training over three years. The Avonwood nurses are already making progress with revalidation.
