President’s Report Don’t tell the Treasurer, who is holidaying in Europe, but we’ve spent all “his” money.

After the Carbatec thicknesser which ‘had served us many days’ finally gave up the ghost, and the

mournful cries of the devastated members reached the ears of our very attendant committee, a new

Powermatic 20inch thicknesser was purchased through our trusty member on the staff at Carbatec.

Andy gave us a great deal and for that and his attention to detail we thank him and Carbatec. This

machine is 3 phase and will have to be wired in so a short wait is anticipated. It also requires a little

rearrangement of machine placement. Please familiarise yourself with the new set-up and the safety

issues associated with same.

Then, after some long-term debate, the defibrillator approved by committee has been purchased. All up

we are about $7000 poorer. Now your committee has seen to your needs, please respond by fulfilling

your side of the deal by attending to the little things –

Don’t forget to:

Throw in your $2 when you come for a session at the club

Don’t forget to pay for your wood

Look after our machines;

Do your best to support Club functions which contribute to club funds;

Make yourself available for fundraisers e.g. Bunnings BBQ.

The demo by Chris Pouncy was well attended and well received. Carbatec have complemented us and

named us as the best “audience” of the entire Australia wide tour. Not something to be sneezed at, and

another feather in our cap. Give yourselves a pat on the back. I should acknowledge here the input from

Paul in urging Wednesday demos. This has been a great success and we look forward, as does he, to the

time we can see Paul every week and benefit from his wisdom and skill.

Wilco went AWOL, but the response already to the “Pens for the Troops” has been amazing. Now he’s

back from his annual walkabout in Nambour, a couple of days will be organised to “teach” pen-turning

and to produce some more.

Don’t forget the Auction on 14th of August with lists of items to Bill by 7th. Any assistance with

preparation on Tuesday 13th would be appreciated.

Mt Gravatt Show this weekend and Redfest on the first weekend in September – all assistance with

preparation and manning of stalls and demos and workshops will be well received.

I finish on a sad note in this month that we have lost two more former members: Malcolm Randall and

Geoff Rayson. Our thoughts are with their families and we thank both men for their contribution to our

Club.

Happy Woodworking

Steve.

Articles of Interest LIBRARY

Club members are again reminded not to remove books which still bear a red sticker on the cover. The

book becomes available for borrowing after the red sticker has been removed. The latest woodcarving

magazine is the latest casualty to disappear with the red sticker still attached. A pyrography book is also

missing and both these items are to be returned without delay.

MISSING BOWLS & TIMBER

Rob McG. is missing 2 bowls which were on display at the Maleny wood show. They went missing

between the conclusion of the show and unpacking of all the containers back at the club house. Some

slabs of timber bearing Rob’s name have also disappeared. These slabs are necessary for a special

project by Rob. If anyone is able to shed any light on these missing items please contact Steve as soon as

possible.

Remember if it’s not your name on the timber it is not yours.

MT GRAVATT SHOW - 27th & 28th July

Just a reminder to members that our club has a stand at the show and you are encouraged to visit as a

show of support or to assist. The volunteer roster has closed but there is nothing to stop you from

getting behind the counter if you have an hour or two to spare between your wanderings around the

rest of the show.

UP COMING CHANGES TO CLUB PROTOCOLS & WEBSITE

Evan has taken a role in reviewing our club rules to update them to meet current requirements and

stream-lining our medical records system. Alan Bruce and Chris are weaving their magic in the IT area by

revising our database and internet access possibilities.

Many thanks to the members for taking on these tasks.

INSTRUMENT MAKING GROUP

Dave P. has chosen for the group to make a four string concert ukulele which is a better instrument than

the standard ukulele. This group will meet on the 3rd Friday of each month between 9.30 & 12.30, for

planning and discussion and on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month for the making of the instrument.

A DVD will soon be available from the club for $2 to assist those participating in this project.

TOOL AUCTION

The next tool auction will be held at the club on the 14th August. A form has been compiled and sent out,

by Bill, for members to list their items, selling price and other information. This form can be completed

online and emailed back to Bill. If you do not have access to email the form must be returned to Bill at

least a week prior to the auction. Now is your chance to dispose of your pre-loved tools and machinery.

A reserve price can be set but remember it should be kept at a reasonable level if you want it to be sold.

All items are to be brought to the club on 13th August whereupon each item will be numbered.

Volunteers are needed to help with the setup and cataloguing if items for sale.

The club takes 10% commission of the selling price.

COOROY - Inter Club Competition

The Cooroy Woodworkers Club holds its Wood Craft Show in September each year.

A volunteer is required to take items up to Cooroy for the competition, at Cooroy Memorial Hall, Maple

Street Cooroy, on Thursday 19th September on behalf of the club members and for someone to be

responsible to collect these items for return to Brisbane on the Sunday 22nd.

Our usual courier at the club is unable to undertake this task this year and it would be good to pass the

baton on to a willing club member.

6

Just a reminder to members to complete your form and return it to the club as soon as possible as your

life may very well depend on it should an emergency arise.

It is there for the purpose of assisting paramedics in an emergency situation. It is securely stored and

available only to the paramedics for these situations.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

The club celebrated this occasion at the Manly Bowls Club on 6th July. For those lucky enough to be able

to attend the food was delicious, plentiful and large variety of high quality food was available and

matched the quality of the service and facilities.

All those who attended had lots of fun with the raffle and the prizes were predominately made up of

chocolate, wine, plants and lovely hand crafted jewellery. Many thanks to Adrian and others who

organised this event. Let’s make it a bigger event next year, bring along some friends so book it in your

calendar before you forget. You don’t need to be a club member, friends and family are more than

welcome.

The Club’s ‘’Chain Gang’’ hard at work cutting up a large Camphor Laurel tree into workable pieces. A

special thanks to John, Jim, Frank and volunteers for their expertise in carrying out this enormous task.

STATE Of ORIGIN

Not with standing an unfortunate ending to the game a good night was had by all who attended and

dined on fresh prawns and oysters. Foods left over were sold on the night to any of the attendees who

wanted a ‘’take away’’. Book yourself in for next year for a good night out.

We would like to present some of the items from early club newsletters.

Rick a recent newcomer to the club has made some lovely

items.

This is Rick’s first item he made on a lathe.

Well Done!

These citronella candle holders below are made from wood recovered from branches

and debris in Rick’s yard. Very resourceful & very unique!

Rick created this Rhino from timber debris he recovered from his yard. He could see the shape so did a bit of cutting & carving to finalise the head. Very clever & life like!
