Dear Members
Message from our new President – Derek Timmins
It is with great pleasure that I write this, my first message to the members as President of PAANZ. I
feel quite privileged to be nominated for the position. I certainly have big shoes to fill, following on
from Guy Bailey, who has done a great job over the last three years in sometimes very trying
circumstances. On behalf of the Executive and the wider membership, thank you Guy for your years
at the helm and your continued support. In fact it was actually when I was working with Guy in
Hamilton as a recent graduate when my interest in acupuncture began, leading me to do my initial
training with PAANZ before gaining registration in 2003. Since then, I have been constantly amazed
with the sometimes incredible effects acupuncture can have. Fast forward 11 years and I currently
work in Auckland as a part-owner of two Physiotherapy practices, one in Half Moon Bay, the other
just down the road in Pakuranga. Over the last couple of years I have also been a guest lecturer,
teaching the introductory TCM component on the AUT Western Acupuncture course.
Amongst the other changes at the AGM, Susan Kohut has taken on the role of Education
officer. Susan brings a wealth of knowledge to her role, being the Paper leader for the Post Graduate
Certificate in Western Acupuncture, a previous President of PAANZ and co-Author of the PAANZ
Guidelines for Safe Practice (2014). Later in the newsletter, Susan presents a very interesting report
on her recent trip to China. I must thank Anne Macann for her years of service as Education officer,
you have done an incredible job. I would also like to thank Trevor Montgomery, Jillian McDowell,
Andrea Moses and Jane Scoular for remaining in their roles as Treasurer, Research officer, IAAPT
representative and Registrar. Guy Bailey, Nikki Tse, Lynda Atkinson and Andrea Moses remain on
the Executive committee, thank you for your continued support. Kirsty Speedy stepped down from
the Executive at the AGM, thank you Kirsty for all your hard work over the years, your experience
2
and knowledge of PAANZ will be sorely missed. We do however have two new Executive members,
Cathy Lewsley and Raylene Kirk, I look forward to your input on the committee.
The PAANZ Symposium was held in Wellington prior to the AGM, it was a great success and showcased the amazing skills and knowledge of the people who make up PAANZ, I am already looking forward to next year! Warm regards Derek Timmins - President
Message from new executive member – Cathy Lewsley I am from a small rural and beautiful little town of Te Anau where I have been practicing
acupuncture for the last 15 years.
I look forward to being a part of the PAANZ committee as I have always been impressed by the
high level of organisation, enthusiasm and support that it brings to its members and would like to
contribute.
Message from the Administration Office – Angela Trotter It is hugely important to me that our members are aware of what is happening within PAANZ and kept up to date with news on any aspect of PAANZ. Below is a summary of recent business and should you have any further queries please email me. I always love hearing from our members! Membership We currently have a total of 281 members, 120 of which are registered members. Courses for 2014 We have three courses left to run this year, two of which are our new Dry Needling – Foundation courses. There are spaces still available, on all three courses, so if you would like to register simply email [email protected]. Case History day Our next case study day is for our Southland members, this is to be held on Thursday 13 November, 7pm at Prohealth Physiotherapy, 124 Kelvin Street, Invercargill. Please register your space by emailing [email protected]. A day for our West Coast and Manawatu/Whanganui members is still be arranged and I will update you on these dates when known.

Message from our new Education Officer – Susan Kohut
Hello. I went to China for three weeks travelling about. It was great with so much to see, three weeks
barely touched the surface, and it is a big place! As well as holidaying I went to the Shanghai TCM
museum (I wonder if it counts for PAANZ points?), sampled some local treatments (the 20+ cupping
bruises took over two weeks to go away) and went to an acupuncture conference!
4
You might ask why go to a conference when you are on holiday – it is a very good question, but it
does offset some costs when some of your trip contributes to the dreaded taxes.
Before I start on things acupuncture I will mention the Shanghai museum. Most visitors to Shanghai
seem to go there – it has free admission. As a physio I was very intrigued by the pillows – of the
glazed pottery kind – they did not look comfortable, no wonder the Chinese so quickly developed
treatments for sore necks… The picture of the pillow is one of the more modern ones on display,
dating back to 1271 – 1308. Apparently similar pillows are still in use, fortunately not in any hotels.
The Shanghai TCM museum was interesting, all of the things one sees photographed in TCM texts,
such as the early stone and bone needles, the life-size bronze acupuncture teaching figures, the
needle cases of the early ‘nine needles’…, and so much more. There was a section on very early
acupuncture, with books such as the Huang Di Nei Jing Ling Shu (475BC – 220AD), but as books
were not in regular print in China until the Tang Dynasty (618–907), one presumes they are copies,
but old nonetheless! A lacquer statue of the early meridians intrigued me, one always assumes the
meridians have been the same for a long time, but clearly they have evolved with the times. A bronze
statue of the meridians (1774) shows the changes over time, it was in a ‘box set’, and awarded by
the Emperor as a prize in medicine.

After much travelling through China we arrived in Beijing. I attended the Society of Acupuncture
Research (SAR) conference which they co-shared with the Chinese Association of Acupuncture-
Moxibustion (CAAM). Prior to the conference they had arranged some hospital visits. I went along
to the Guangan Men Hospital one afternoon when the temperature outside had got to 42˚C. It was
hot and the hospital was packed. Everywhere people were sat along corridors. As we walked through
outpatients we passed the pharmacies – side by side was a TCM pharmacy next to Western
medicine. Upstairs were the acupuncture clinics. They were close to wards, one was neurological,
the other gastro-intestinal. Patients got acupuncture in those wards five days a week alongside
conventional treatment, such as physiotherapy for a stroke. There are statistics that in China
acupuncture is used much more for neurological conditions than musculo-skeletal. The place was
busy, but the six bedded rooms relied a lot on family and there were no curtains! In the actual
acupuncture clinic there were curtains, but the staff were keen to show us all of the special tools they
employ. So we saw a man with depression have 20 needles inserted extremely quickly (they are
very deft at needle insertion – sterile disposable needles, 30mm x 0.25 gauge) into his scalp and
face. He just sat there quietly. Another came in for treatment of his acne, he was having ‘fire’
needling. Special needles are heated in a Bunsen burner flame and then touched to the acne scars.
The boy being treated flinched, so did all of the observers. He had about 20 applications of this!
Others were having treatment for back pain etc., one man had two needles inserted into his BL2
point and then he did his back exercises in standing prior to his acupuncture treatment – this was to
pre-empt the Bladder channel. Most of the needling being done was very local, there was not a lot
of use of distant points. I was not expecting this. I asked about tongue and pulse diagnostics pre and
post treatment as none was being done. The response was that it was sometimes done on the initial
visit, but not every time. I didn’t go to Beijing Hospital (it was either that or go to the Great Wall, so
an easy choice), but one of the doctors who went on both visits told me later it was more like an
American hospital – very different and apparently that’s where the Party elite get treatment.
The Conference was over three days with about 500 delegates. It was very good. A portion of the
acupuncture worlds ‘gurus’ were there: Jisheng Han, Richard Hammershlag, Vitaly Napadow,
Claudia Witt, Hugh MacPherson, Elisabet Stener-Victorin, Richard Harris, Li-xing Lao, Ji-liang Fang,
Remy Coetaux, Ryan Milley, Robert Davis, Jiang-Ti Kong ….. the list goes on. Hence to say the
6
presentations were of a very high calibre, the poster sessions were huge (over 300 posters) and it
was fantastic to meet so many people from so many professions who are researching acupuncture,
such as Ophthalmologists, Clinical Psychologists, Anthropologists …
A real highlight was the presentation of a SAR lifetime award to Jisheng Han by Richard
Hammerschlag.
Prof Han spoke, he is now 86 years old and after 60 years is still researching acupuncture’s effects.
His favourite joke is that “acupuncture does not work well for him”!
And I finally know that Bee Venom acupuncture is not only injecting bee venom into acupuncture
points, but also holding bees in tweezers and putting them on the point so it stings the patient. I met
an American researcher who has worked wonders in a man with Agent-orange induced Parkinsons
through this treatment. They order the bees, they are couriered in and now the patients wife treats
him!
If you are still reading after all of this – the moral of the story is: don’t necessarily stay in New Zealand
for your acupuncture education, PAANZ members are well equipped to participate in acupuncture
courses and conferences all over the world. This year’s iSAM’s conference is being in October in
Tokyo. In 2015 it will be held at Otago University. Or if you want to go to the Eastern U.S.A. SAR’S
conference is being held in conjunction with the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) and Fascia
in November at Harvard in Boston, MA. For further acupuncture links to ongoing education see the
‘Course links’ page in this newsletter.

Message from our Registrar – Jane Scoular
All members with registration ending on 31 December 2014 have now been contacted, to confirm
whether or not you have earned enough points to continue on your registration for a further three
7
years. All members that have sufficient points will receive an updated certificate in the post in early
December. This is at no cost, and included as part of your membership.
There are heaps of ways you can get points which will cost you nothing apart from a bit of time. The easiest way to get points is to give a talk to a group of six or more people - they don't have to be physiotherapists, they can be a bunch of your friends, a local group, e.g. parents/Probus/community/whatever. The talk can be on anything to do with acupuncture. An hour long talk gives you 10 pts. Borrow a book or video out of the library and send us a short review - 3 pts. Peer review - three or more of you get together three times over a year and that is another 5 pts. Or critique an article, see guidelines for this in the members’ only section on the website.
If you have any queries regarding your registration or would like to apply to become a Registered
physiotherapy acupuncturists within PAANZ please contact [email protected] or phone Angela
(PAANZ administrator) on 04 894 1685 for more information.
