All lectures are free, reservations are appreciated.
What Happens When You Tickle an Elephant’s Toes?
Thursday, April 26 at 1 pm
The Elephant Nature Park outside Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, is where dozens of
elephants have found sanctuary, rescued from lives of abuse and neglect. Although some Asian
elephants still live in the wild, the species is fast dwindling. Kate had the distinct honor of
living at the park and volunteering for two weeks in 2006 feeding, bathing, and walking these
grand creatures. The experience begs to be shared.
About the Speaker: Kate Dernocoeur has a special love for animals, the natural world and
remote settings. She visited and explored over 40 countries. Active as a volunteer EMT-
firefighter for Ada Township, she is also part of Kent County Search & Rescue’s K9 unit.
Generously underwritten by Pilgrim Manor
We at Pilgrim Manor care for people. It’s what we do. And it’s our intent to do it well. We don’t
simply heal the body, or find someone the right level of care, or select the right residence for
retirement living. We care for the whole person.
Michigan’s Great Time Confusion
Thursday, May 17 at 1pm
This is the story of the very difficult and chaotic transition from Local Sun Time, to Railroad
Time to Standard Time. Michigan once had 27 time zones! How many different times were
observed in Detroit alone? In 1883, the railroads operated by over 50 different time
standards; how many different times were used at the railroad depots in Grand Rapids?
Hint: Pittsburgh had six! Did the confusion end when the U.S. Congress passed the Standard
Time Act in 1918? These questions will be explored and more! Be prepared to go back in time,
to imagine life without clocks, to appreciate a different pace of life, and to recognize the forces
that pushed our communities to a new national identity.
About the speaker: David Lee Smith is a graduate of Creston High School, GRCC, and
Western Michigan University with a degree in Music Education. After four years in the U.S.
Air Force he returned to Grand Rapids and worked in the telephone and computer industries.
Generously underwritten by Clear Captions
ClearCaptions is an FCC-certified telephone captioning provider that helps millions of people
with hearing loss stay connected with the world. Founded in 2011, ClearCaptions provides an
innovative suite of captioning services

Senior Center News Weekly Volunteers Needed
In order to better serve prospective members,
new members and those current members
who have questions, we are kicking off a
pilot program using "Weekly Ambassadors"
to staff the center from 9:15am-12:15pm on
weekdays.
Duties include:
Greeting people and answering questions
about The Center
Giving short tours of The Center to
prospective members
Making outbound reminder calls
Light computer work
Other duties as assigned
We are looking for candidates that can
commit to the same day every week (i.e.
every Wednesday morning - every week),
who are friendly and give excellent customer
service. We also will need a few substitutes
willing to work as needed. Substitutes will
cover the shift for the weekly ambassadors
when they need time off or want to go on a
senior center activity.
A short application needs to be filled out and
will be provided via email to those who are
interested. We will also be setting up
interviews. We anticipate more applicants
than positions so, unfortunately, not all those
who are interested can be chosen.
This new pilot program will be assessed
every 3 months.
Please contact us if interested

Presentations (Continued) Grieving, Coping, and Surviving - Reflective, Uplifting, and Spiritual
Monday, April 30 @ 1pm Author and speaker, Merredith Perkins, shares her journey after the loss of her daughter and
discusses how you can be inspired by what she has learned. Human loss comes in all forms.
Loss can occur as a relationship break-up, a divorce, estrangement, or death of a loved one.
Surviving loss comes in all forms as well. She talks about learning to forge through the
sadness to celebrate the best opportunities of life by accomplishing something everyday, no
matter how ordinary or extraordinary, and learning to love herself. Merredith shares how she
coped with the loss of her daughter by reminiscing and capturing some of the funniest
moments and raucous laughter of their lives, citing movies and events that made them laugh,
and how she now applies those moments of laughter to new moments of fun.
About the Speaker: Merredith’s teaching experience spanned forty-four years from pre-school
to graduate school, managing classrooms as creative learning environments. Her daughter,
Toi, was there all along her educational path, encouraging her in her purpose for teaching.

From the Inside Out A look back at the Victorian Lady
Thursday, May 10 @1pm She's back! We loved Wendy's program, first
offered five years ago, and wanted to bring
her back for all those who haven't had the
opportunity to enjoy it.
Experience what a Victorian lady went
through to get dressed, layer by layer! We
will hear what amazing "architecture" was
worn underneath to give the finished gown its
shape and style. Watch as each article of
clothing is donned and explained from the
chemise and shoes and working up to hat and
gloves. With vintage and reproduced pieces,
Wendy will demonstrate the staggering
number of pieces women wore everyday.
Many lovely antique fashions, wedding
gowns, and personal items are displayed for
guests to see and examine. Discover the little
known facts that will leave you marveling,
and thankful that we live today!
About the Speaker: Wendy Batchelder is a
historical interpreter and has worked as an
educator and costumer for many years. She
discovered that there are many people who
crave more information on what is was really
like to dress and live as a Victorian woman.
She demonstrates exactly what it took to
dress over a 100 years ago. As a costumed
interpreter, she finds that presenting history in
costume is an undervalued teaching tool.

Into the Woods Thursday, May 3 Depart from the Senior Center at 6:45 return by 10pm A rare modern classic for adults; a timeless yet relevant piece, James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for both predictable and surprising adventures. PG-13 ADULTERY, DEATH, MILD VIOLENCE Cost: $31
A Few Good Men Thursday, June 14 Depart from the Senior Center at 6:45 return by 10pm Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway hit about the trial of two Marines for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay sizzles on stage. The Navy lawyer, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea bargain and a cover up of what really happened. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, the lawyer eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, puts the military mentality and the Marine code of honor on trial. Dead Wake by Erik Larson
Book Discussion Monday, April 16 @ 1pm at the Senior Center
Facilitated by Maggie McDaniel from the Kent District Library Plainfield branch.
It is a story that many of us think we know but don’t, and Erik Larson tells it thrillingly,
switching between hunter and hunted while painting a larger portrait of America at the height
of the Progressive Era. Full of glamour and suspense, Dead Wake brings to life a cast of
evocative characters.

Read the book
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Book Discussion Monday, May 21 @ 1pm at the Senior Center
Facilitated by Maggie McDaniel from the Kent District Library Plainfield branch.
This book won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. It’s a stylized, almost
fantastical story of a slave’s escape via the underground railroad. An easy read, it’s not to be
missed.

Underground Railroad: The William Still Story
Monday, May 21 @ 2:30pm at the Senior Center (Run Time, 1 hour)
William Still was one of the most important, yet largely unheralded heroes of the

Visit the Location - Underground Railroad Motorcoach Trip (New Itinerary!)
Monday, June 4 Departs at 7:30am, return by 5pm
Visit and learn about actual stops on the Underground Railroad!
We begin our journey touring and learning about the James Bonine house. James was one of
the Quaker farmers who set aside land to be cleared and farmed by freedom seekers and
Freedmen, many of whom went on to settle permanently in the area. We will then travel the
area taking a guided tour visiting other stops along the Underground Railroad.
Lunch will be enjoyed at Bullseye Marketplace where you will be treated to a delicious buffet
style lunch including soup, salad and hot food buffet followed by dessert.
We will then traverse to the Dr. Nathan Thomas House, built in 1835. It was the home of one
of Michigan's most active Underground Railroad participants, a founding member of the
state's Republican Party and Kalamazoo County's first physician.
Cost: $77 ($25 deposit - balance due April 23 or pay in full now.)
Includes: Transportation by motor coach, entrance fee, lunch, driver gratuity, coffee & donuts.
