1 Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society, Inc. No. A005226F NEWSLETTER – No. 12 November 2019 Welcome to the twelfth newsletter of the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society. 2018 was an exciting year, highlighted by the 21 st Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference (21AFMC) hosted by the University of Adelaide in December. The conference was extremely successful, providing a high-quality event for delegates to listen to and engage in fluid mechanics research; a report of the conference is provided below. 2018 also marked the final year of Hugh Blackburn’s second term as AFMS president. Under his leadership the AFMS has developed a number of new and important initiatives, including new student awards and the establishment of the Women in Fluids Mechanics sub-committee. Tony Lucey was elected in December 2018 to serve as the new President, and with a sound financial base, supplemented by the membership fees and profits recovered from the 21AFMC, he is well placed to lead the society. NEWS 21AFMC Report The 21 st Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference was held from December 10 th to 13 th , 2018 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Over the four days there were 47 sessions covering 30 distinct topics, attended by a total of 356 delegates from 24 countries. The delegates included 28 industry personnel, 165 academics and 163 students. Overall there were 390 abstracts received by the conference organisers, leading to 7 keynote presentations and 295 standard presentations, 158 of which were delivered by students. Of these, approximately 45 papers were identified for a (future) special edition of the International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow. The Batchelor Lecture was delivered by John Eaton of Stanford University, which was followed by six brilliant Keynote lectures by leading fluid mechanics researchers, including Ellen Longmire (University of Minnesota), Beverley McKeon (Caltech), Alfredo Soldati (TU Wien), Jens Norkeer Sorensen (Danish Technical University), Julio Soria (Monash University), and Yvonne Stokes (University of Adelaide).
