Due to our President still being laid up in Manila

getting used to his new heart situation (no he didn’t have a transplant) he is not able to provide us with his report for October.

So his committee have put together a few pictures with captions to show him what they have been up to in his absence. I suppose it also shows that he is not indispensable and that the Sub-Branch can manage to

function as normal.

Here goes:

Medical mission at Porac on 4th of October where 768 children were attended to.

Liaising with owners at Kings Head on 7 October enjoying a sponsors visit and sampling the tucker (food for non-Ozzie readers).

***** ***** *****

So there you go Mr President, we haven’t been slacking off in your absence.

If you are not back by 1 November, we will conduct the next Medical Mission at AMSIC. We know that you would ask for volunteers to assist and be ready to leave the Ponderosa by about 7:30am. A mud map is elsewhere in this newsletter.

We know that you would also like to remind members that the Wednesday raffles are now held at Night Moves Club.

You would more than likely remind members that an important date is set in February 2015- our Annual General Meeting (AGM). This is the usual three month

(or more) advice in advance that it is on. All positions will be declared vacant.

And finally, a message from our Editor, try and be back in Angeles so that he can come up from Australia and Davao to enjoy your Christmas drinks on the 15th of December.

RSL Pension Success Story

In January 2014 Ken SMITH, a

past RSL Secretary passed

away, leaving his partner of 10

years with promises of security

for her future. Alas, Ken did not

put his thoughts and wishes

into practice. Instead he left

behind a bewildered, destitute,

Filipino woman. She knew

absolutely nothing of Ken's

finances or assets. All she had

was an ATM Card in Ken's name

and knew he received a

pension, nothing else. Nine

months later after in- depth

investigation and arranging

ID's, passports, birth

certificates, visa's, finance,

Australian Tax File Numbers,

bank accounts, etc., Ken's

partner finally received an

Australian Defence Force

Retirement Death Benefit

(DFRBD) Pension for life, in

addition her 14 year old son

receives an Education

Allowance until he attains age

25 years. This was a successful

I would like to thank the

following persons for their help

A "whip round", saw donations

from Lloyd INKELMANN, Bob

BARNES, Gary BARNES, Ian

BRIGGS and myself. We raised

14,000 Peso that allowed his

partner breathing space in her

hour of need.

President James assisted in the

usual ID certifications, Power of

Attorney Forms, etc.

John POWER, our member and

immigration man volunteered

his support in arranging a visa

for Ken's partner, free of

charge.

Peter Strudwick for arranged

the bank accounts.

DFRDB Staff in Australia, for

their guidance and assistance.

These people were extremely

helpful.

In retrospect, you military

expats on pensions (Not Special

Rate Pensions - TPI), in long

term relationships, get off your

butts and seek information on

pensions for your partners,

before you exit the planet.

Don't leave it for others to sort

out. For instance

DFRDB/COMSUPER require your

partner prove your relationship

has existed for more than 3

years. Start getting joint

names on all documents and

receipts to use as proof.

Your partner can open an

Australian Bank account, they

have no need to travel to

Australia. Obtain documents

from the Australian Bank, visit

the Australia Embassy, Manila

with your partner plus their ID

documents and have the

Embassy complete and sign the

bank account application and

certify the ID's. You send these

documents to the bank in

Australia. ANZ Bank, Manila is

not suitable as they require

$10,000 AUD deposited to have

an account.

You have a 4 week time frame

to use an Australian based

bank. If not used it is cancelled.

DFRBD require the bank is

physically based in Australia,

they do not send pensions

overseas.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS

ADVICE

This ZIPPO lighter has been located and

the person holding it would like to get it to

Wells who was in Saigon, let the editor

know and I will get onto the finder. Ed

10 DAYS TO GO TO CONFIRM YOUR PLACE AT GALLIPOLI 2015

There are just 10 days left for Australians offered a place in the ballot for Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli in 2015 to accept the chance of a lifetime and provide travel details for next year’s Centenary Dawn Service.

The deadline to confirm attendance at the commemorations is 11:59 pm (AEDT) Saturday, 25 October 2014. But it is not enough to just accept your place, you must also provide your travel bookings details by this time. People can accept or decline their place and provide travel details by logging into their ballot account via www.gallipoli2015.dva.gov.au or, if they have forgotten their account details, calling Ticketek on 1300 364 002. Australians are encouraged to accept or decline their place as soon as possible. There are almost 38,000 on the wait list eager to attend the commemorations, and it is important to give those people as much time as possible to organise and pay for their trip. Those who do not accept their place and provide the required details by the deadline will lose their place and not be able to attend the commemorations. These passes will be automatically reissued to the next people on the wait list in the category in which they were originally offered. A further 223 double passes were released to the wait list last week bringing the total number of wait list releases to 455 double passes. The wait list will operate until 31 March 2015. Those without tickets may consider visiting Gallipoli on

RSL ANGELES CITY SUB BRANCH PHILIPPINES | Issue 91 5

6 August 2015 for the Battle of Lone Pine Centenary commemoration service. The Battle at Lone Pine saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Gallipoli campaign. Australians may also consider attending another Dawn Service in Australia or overseas or watch the television broadcast of the Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux services on the ABC. Another option is to visit Gallipoli at another time during the Centenary year. For more information on Gallipoli 2015 visit www.gallipoli2015.dva.gov.au or the Anzac Centenary visit www.anzaccentenary.gov.au

THE MEDIUM In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the Mystic delivered grave news: "There's no easy way to tell you this, so I'll just be blunt. Prepare yourself to be a widow... Your husband will die a violent and horrible death, this year." Visibly shaken, Laura stared at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself and to stop her mind racing. She simply had to know... She met the Fortune Teller's gaze, steadied her voice and asked,

"Will I be acquitted?"

W4K

Welfare Officer Chris Weeks informed the meeting 32 Wheelchairs cases have been seen. Twenty Special needs Wheelchairs and 11 standard have been given out. It was sad and disappointing that one special needs child could not be helped. It was discussed that 10 Special need wheelchairs will be handed over to Ms. Dhidak as requested by W4K.

Business Medications

Vice President Gregg Mann explained that 85% of Establishments have been completed with approximately 1726 bags of medication handed out. He estimated there were still a few big Establishments to complete and the final figure will be about 2900 bags. Gregg requested that all outstanding Establishment forms be returned to him for analysis. The Medical Distribution was warmly received and appreciated by the Angeles City RSL supporting Establishments.

Gregg told the meeting of the large back log for Hearing Aids and that appointments were being made on an opportunity basis.

Mid-Week Raffle

The Monday night raffle held at Night Moves 4:30pm on every Monday has been a success and raised totals of approximately ₱ 9K 11K 5K and 6K so far. Kooka asked members to please turn up at the raffle to show the Angeles City RSL supports Night Moves in the raffles. The Secretary asked the meeting if a system similar to Night Moves could be adopted for the Saturday raffles at Phillies. It was agreed after some discussion that the Secretary approach Barry the owner of Phillies to see if selected waitresses could sell during the week. It was pointed out names and phone numbers would be required on the tickets to identify winners who were not present on the night. This would alleviate the need for re draws which have become quite prevalent in recent weeks. A trial period of a month would be tested to see if the Night Moves procedure would work at Phillies.

Due to the lack of prizes decided not to conduct a raffle at the Ponderosa on a Tuesday after meetings.

Australia Day Fiesta 25 Jan 15.

VP Gregg Mann explained to the meeting there was a possibility of expanding the number of booths from 29 to 33. Gregg informed the meeting that eight prizes for the Monster Australia Day Fiesta Raffle have been obtained.

Door Prize

The Door Prize was won by Ron Parrott.

The Vice President called for any further business, received no response,

The Meeting closed at 1515 hours.

AUSTRALIAN FILIPINOS IN WORLD WAR 2

Part 1 : the Cesar family

Apart from the five Filipino-Australian wharf labourers who were killed during the first Japanese raid on Darwin on 19 February 1942, at least seventeen Filipino-Australians with a Northern Territory connection are known to have volunteered for uniformed service during World War 2.

Elias Cesar (1872-1938) was a seaman and pearl diver who came to Port Darwin via Singapore in 1896 under the Indentured Labour Scheme. He sailed to Hong Kong and found a wife - Elena Dos Anjos (1875-1941), who reputedly had grown up in an orphanage run by Portuguese Nuns.

Elias married Elena in Darwin on 22 November 1902 and in the camp just out of town known as the ‘Police Paddock’ (now Stuart Park) they raised four sons and three daughters (their first boy died in 1931 aged 27, and three other sons died in infancy).

One daughter, Lorenza Agnes Cesar (1905-1978), married the Great War veteran Elias Conanan in Darwin on 27 April 1922. Family lore says that Lorenza always believed that the original spelling of the family surname was ‘Cesar’, and this version of the name is still encountered in the Philippines today.

But the ‘Ceasar’ version came to be used by some in Australia. The old ‘Manilaman’ Elias Cesar died on 24 May 1938 from a heart condition, and was buried in Darwin’s ‘Pioneer Cemetery’ on Goyder Road. He was aged 66 years and was one of the oldest residents of Darwin – he had been in Australia for 42 years.

On 16 December 1941, the Administrator ordered the evacuation of all women and children from Darwin, and in the ensuring eight weeks over 1,000 women and some 900 children left by ship, aircraft, road and train. Elena evacuated her family to Darlinghurst, NSW: all three of Elias and Elena’s sons alive at the time of World War 2 served in uniform.

D54 Private Cecilio Basil Ceasar (1917-2007)

D55 Private William Paul Ceasar (1919-1995)

Elias and Elena’s second son Basil was born at the Police Paddock on 22 November 1917, and their third son Bill was born on 25 June 1919. Basil and Bill enlisted for service with the Darwin Garrison on 28 July 1941. They received consecutive Army numbers D54 and D55 – the ‘D’ prefix denoting enlistment in the Militia forces in Darwin.

After the bombing raids they were evacuated and joined their mother and sisters in Darlinghurst. Basil re-enlisted for Militia service at Liverpool on 1 February 1943, and then later joined the AIF, serving until 24 July 1946 with the Transport Platoon of the 2/30th Infantry Battalion AIF.

DX987 Private Paul Zachary Caesar (1922-2011)

Elias and Elena’s fourth son Paul was born on 18 November 1922. He enlisted in the AIF in Northfield, SA in 1943 on his 21st birthday and served with the 121st Australian General Hospital in Katherine and in WA until 5 June 1946. Paul tended to use the spelling ‘Caesar’ for the family surname. At his funeral in Brisbane the Australian flag was lowered and

folded and the Last Post was played, and Anzac poppies and rose petals were made available for the mourners to place on the coffin.

Through their daughter Lorenza, two grandchildren of Elias and Elena also served in World War 2:

Private Priscilla Isabel Cesar Conanan, and Sapper Joseph Louis Cesar Conanan.

The many descendants of Elias and Elena Cesar still live in Queensland and beyond today – numbered among them is a great-granddaughter serving as a senior officer in the RAAF, whose godfather was Paul Caesar.

TRY AND WORK THIS OUT Three men went to a motel. The motel manager said a room cost $30, so each man put up $10 and went to their room. A little while later the manager realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellhop back to the three guys' room with $5. On the way to the room the bellhop couldn't figure out how to split the $5 between the 3 men, so he gave each one of them $1 and he kept the other $2. This meant that the 3 men paid $9 each for the room for a total of $27. Add the $2 that the bellhop kept = $29. Where did the other dollar go?
