Mr Bragard’s Weekly Update

We have reached the halfway mark of the autumn term. This half term has been action-packed with lots of learning, special moments, assemblies, sports action and much more. There have been so many highlights already but my favourite moment was last week’s One Million Children Praying the Rosary. It was such a powerful moment when the whole school were praying together alongside Year 6 and using the power of prayer to make a difference. One of our many proud moments was when the Year 3 girls reached the Essex Finals for cross country. The smiles on their faces when we told them the news was priceless! The moment that made me smile the most was when Year 4 were rapping to learn about perimeter and seeing Mr Overton-Smith with his funky paper glasses! After such a busy half term it is now time to rest for a week and enjoy time with your families and friends. Please can I remind you all to stay safe over the next few weeks as many of you may be taking children out to see fireworks displays or knocking on peoples houses hoping to collect as many sweets as possible. Enjoy yourselves, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all back after the half term break!

READING LIKE OLYMPIANS RACE CHALLENGEOur Reading Like Olympians reading challenge has got off to a fantastic start this year! Thank you to all those of you who are supporting the children by encouraging them to read on a daily basis.

It would be great if the children could maintain these good reading habits over the half-term. To encourage the children to keep up with their ‘daily reads’ over the holiday period, we will be awarding bonus marks! For each daily read (with a parent’s comment noted in a child’s yellow Reading Record book) we will be awarding triple points (three ticks) on their race chart.Children continue to be very excited about the prospect of reading regularly and moving along in the reading race – many are getting closer to completing their first race and winning our bronze award! Many thanks for your ongoing support in enabling the children to read and enjoy books regularly at home.

Science ClubThe children in Science Club have been having a

great time designing and making a child size discus.

They were challenged to make their design fit their

hand and weigh exactly 500g. The choice of

materials was up to them but their final designs

used clay, playdoh and water to create the shape

and weight needed, with varying degrees of

success!Sadly, the playdoh crumbled and the water balloon

version burst, so the most effective version turned

out to be the one modelled with clay. It is fair to say

that throwing technique left a lot to be desired! Lots

of fun was had though as we explored scientific

principles behind the choice of materials.

Aldi Kit for Schools Update

So far we have collected about 240 stickers for our wall chart.

Only another 60 to go! Soon Aldi will be finishing this initiative

so please get as many stickers in as possible for when we get

back after half term to complete our chart!

Well done to both our netball and football teams at the Deanery event. There were some fantastic performances across the afternoon and brilliant sportsmanship shown throughout. As always we were very proud of you all!

Year 3 Storytelling

On Wednesday the Year 3 children were lucky enough to listen to Hannah tell them a

magical story set in Southend, many, many, many, many years ago. Using the power of

imagination we were transported to the grounds of The Priory, where a mysterious

creature lurked, breathing fire and destroying the forest. A brave young knight set about

to save the people of Southend. Some may say folklore, some may say just a fairy story,

but have you ever wondered why the sand on the beaches of Southend is grey and oozy.

Maybe the mysterious Bastille creature, its head like a cockerel, its body covered in

scales and its legs covered in yellow feathers and breathing out fire really was real. Who

knows, do parts of this creature still live beneath the Pier?

Bike ShedsThis term we have had many bikes and scooters being used to come to school which is fantastic! However the children seem to be utilising only the playground bike shed and it is starting to become unsafe. After half term we are asking all children riding bikes to school to use the bike sheds outside the junior block on Windermere Road. If your child is using a scooter, they can continue to use the bike shed on the playground.

School Winter UniformAn email reminder was sent to all our families in regards to the correct uniform that should be worn by all our pupils. In particular, we would like to highlight that BOOTS (including ankle boots) are not part of the school uniform. Earrings are also not permitted by girls or boys and must be removed. Sacred Heart expects a high standard of dress code from our children that makes them feel proud to be part of the school community. We would also remind everyone to ensure that ALL uniform is clearly labelled so that we can reunite any lost property. Thank you for your continued support.

Smoking Outside the School GateWe would like to kindly ask parents to refrain from smoking in close proximity to the school grounds. This is for the good of our children and younger siblings.

School Admission ConsultationsParents and carers are advised that a number of schools/trusts in the area are consulting on their admission arrangements for 2021/22 as required by law. Appointments in School Time

We are having a considerable number of parents coming in from

2.30pm onwards for optician, dentist etc. Whilst we appreciate

not all appointments can be made out of school time, where

appointments are in school time or they need to leave early,

letters or booking cards should be shared with the office to

confirm all appointments.

Friends of Sacred Heart is a

charitable organisation that holds a

range of events to raise money for

our wonderful school. Events

include quiz nights, curry nights,

beetle bingo, summer and

Christmas fairs. The money raised

goes towards our children's

learning and to improve their

school environment. In previous

years we have helped pay for play

time and lunchtime equipment and

subsidise trips for the children.
