Dear Parents and Caregivers After the huge weekend we had with Jubilee125 I have to admit it was nice to have more subdued one this weekend. I hope you had time to spend as a family as this is a really important thing to do. For the first time this year my wife and I have no children at home as both our children are now involved with tertiary study. Some people say this is a moment to be celebrated where we can finally do what we want free from responsibility but I think getting to that point takes time. The awesome life and noise our kids bring to a home can also make it seem weirdly empty when they are gone, so in short really enjoy having them round because the time goes so fast. We have received a lot of really lovely feedback from those who attended the Jubilee and for many, one of the biggest highlights was Saturday when all the current students were here. Visitors’ commented on how polite, friendly and helpful our children were. They loved their confidence and genuine interest in the lives of those who had come to be a part of things. They spoke of ways students had really embraced the thought that this was a second home and really helped to make the time they shared so special. They did so well and we thank you for allowing them to have time with us last Saturday. Staff made a point in their classes of letting students know how well they had done and this was reinforced at our Monday assembly. Pongakawa offers a huge variety of extra curricula (added to and out of school) activities and at times can make it tricky to decide what to be involved in. As parents we love the fact our children want to give everything a go and this can create both a time and financial pressure on us that often our kids do not understand. I would advise sitting down with your children (even if they are very young) and talk this through with them. It may be you choose one or perhaps two things for them to try and they must stick to this until it is done before adding to, or moving on to something else. Just remember, it is okay as a Mum or dad to say, “no”. it may not be what your child wants to hear but we are the adults and have to make the decisions that are best for our family. In line with the above I would also say lots of activities places high demands on staff who also really want all children to have every possible chance. Pongakawa is quite unusual in that we have a number of staff who give of their time outside the school day and for those who have been in other schools you will agree this is not the norm anymore. It is vital to have parent support with these sports and activities and parent volunteers to coach, manage or lead are very welcome. Despite your level of experience there is a place for you so do, please step up, it makes the task so much easier (and its fun). Have an awesome week Yours in teaching Craig Haggo, Principal

PTA NEWS PTA – AGM Evening
Mon 13th March 7pm Staffroom At Pongakawa we have always had a strong PTA. We are an important voice of the school as well as raising essential funds for items that improve and enhance our children’s learning opportunities. Our PTA provides a network of like-minded parents who want the best for their children and school. It’s a great place to have fun, meet new people and keep in touch with what’s going on at the school. We would like to invite you to join us at our PTA AGM on Monday 13th March at 7pm in the Staffroom. We will be having drinks and dessert and then our AGM. We will follow the AGM with our Monthly Meeting where we will discuss the Quiz Night for this year and organizing of the Junior & Jiddles Disco’s. So please come along and share your ideas. We would love for you to come along, but if you are unable to make the evening meetings, I can add you to my email list to receive minutes and to keep in touch with what’s happening. Feel free to contact me to discuss anything further.

Cricket
Rainbow Cricket Girls
Please get notices in ASAP to Miss Pooley. We are needing parent
help with this event to ensure it happens.
Please let us know on the notice if you are able to help out.
Pongakawa Strikers – a win. Playing in Whakatane against a school
from Opotiki Pongakawa had better fielding, bowling and batting
with POD and super star Alex Garrett scoring an outstanding 35
with the bat and taking 5 wickets with the ball including a hat
trick!!! Black Caps could had done with you on Saturday Alex!
Special thanks to Brett Harrison for his on field support of the
team.
Pongakawa Pirates - Recorded their first win of the season in a nail
biting finish, winning by one run. Fantastic contribution coming
from Kane Jones conceding only 3 runs from his 2 overs, but
player of the day is awarded to Kodi Grant, who in only his second
game scored a match winning 25!
Pongakawa Water Polo
On Friday 3 March Pongakawa had a tough game against Aquinas
White. The teams were very evenly matched with both teams
struggling to get the ball past the respective goalies. In the end
goals to Marika Russell and Dale Horton and some big defence
from the whole, in particular Ben Robertson in goal, made the
difference. Pongakawa eventually came out winners 2 – 1.
Pongakawa’s next game is against Papamoa Blue this Friday
(March 10) at 6pm.
Hockey
Hockey notices will be going home this week to show an
expression of interest to play hockey.
They need to be returned no later than 28 March 2017.
