Are you caring for someone with a drink or drug problem? They could be struggling with addiction or using drugs or alcohol because they are ill, disabled, depressed and feeling unable to cope with their condition. If so, we are here to support you! The D&A group is a monthly support group for carers held on the first Wednesday of each month from 2-4pm here at the Carers Centre. For more information ring Sallie at the Carers Centre on 0207 923 8750. We look forward to welcoming you to the first D&A group meeting on February 6th from 2.00 – 4.00pm.

Advocacy for All Hackney: City & Hackney Carers Centre is now providing a FREE advocacy service for carers through the Advocacy For All network.

If you are over 18 and living in Hackney an advocate can support you to access or engage with health and social care services, support you with housing, education, employment or leisure issues or support you to resolve a dispute with a provider.

You can ask a member of staff to refer you to this advocacy service or you can refer yourself by telephoning FREEPHONE 0800 011 6114 or completing a self-referral online at www.advocacyforallhackney.org.uk. For further information about this service please speak to Sallie or the advice team on 0207 923 8750.

Somali Carers Outreach Project

The Carers Centre has launched a Somali Carers project. Yuksel Konca (Outreach Project Worker ) is available to provide advice, information and support to Somali carers. This could be to undertake a Carers Needs Assessment, listening ear and general information and support. Please call 020 7923 8750 or email [email protected]

Hackney Families Together is a monthly support group for parents of disabled and SEN children up to the age of 18 living in Hackney.

The group is regularly attended by professionals from the ARK, parent groups and the Carers Centre. Speakers are invited to present on a range of issues effecting parents and their children. For further information please contact Barney on 0207 923 8750 or email [email protected].

There will be a training session on the Mental Capacity Act for carers of people with learning disabilities. Everyone is welcome to attend this, but the trainer will not be able to talk about other conditions (such as mental health). It will be at the Carers Centre on:

• Wednesday 13 February

• From 11am to 1pm

Are you an experienced knitter or would you like to learn how to knit? Why not come and join others in a sociable knitting circle….

Jay, a carer registered with City and Hackney Carers Centre found that knitting helped her through some tough times. It might be able to help you too.

The group run by Jay will meet every two weeks on a Thursday starting 28th February at 2-3.30pm at CHCC.

Bring knitting/crochet needles and spare wool to share if you have any – if not CHCC will have a small supply available. Call Jo on 020 7923 8750 for more info.

Do you feel isolated or lonely? The Befriending Project has trained volunteers who can provide you with a listening ear, help you engage interests and hobbies or just visit you at home for a cup of tea and a chat. Call Azhar on 020 7923 8750 for more information.
