T he trees are starting to change, football season is underway and I see Halloween decorations in stores. Whether it feels like it or not, we all know that means fall is here! With fall comes the following events supported by the Cub Club. Mark your calendars and join us!

Cub Club General Meeting/Fall Fiesta Concert – October 7th

Refreshments will be served and a Cub Club update given prior to the Fall Fiesta concert..

Mothers Luncheon – November 3rd

You will receive an invitation to this annual event. This year it will be at the home of Lucy and Craig Davenport. Delicious food and good company are always a sure thing.

Career Fair – November 5th

This is a middle and high school favorite. If interested in hosting a booth, we still have a few spots available. Please contact Angela Murray. If you would like to volunteer in other areas, please contact me.

A quick note on Cub Club membership: out of 864 families, we currently have over 635 participating members. Although we are extremely pleased, our goal is 100% participation. The pizza party challenge is heating up with Ms. Crutti’s 2nd grade class at 100% participation. The Cub Club treats every class with 100% participation to a pizza party; October 15th is the deadline for the competition.

T he 2010-2011 School Directories are here and delivery is in progress! Receive your complimentary directory with your Cub Club membership. If you have not done so, you can still join today!

T urn your trash in to cash for Lab School. Please clip Box Tops, Community Coffee, Campbell’s labels and/or UPCs. This is another source of revenue for our school that does not entail monetary contributions from you. A friendly contest is underway where all students’ names are placed in a drawing for gift certificates with awards given for the most generous contributors. Please place all submissions in an envelope or Ziploc with the student’s name and primary teacher.

P rospective student and family tours were held during the month of September. Thank you to Cub Club volunteers who volunteered their time to show off our wonderful school. As you can imagine, they were very busy. In addition, if you ordered a new field trip t-shirt, they have been delivered and they look “pawsome”!

Go Cubs,

Stacey Moore

We are looking for the following volunteer positions at Polk Elementary. If you can become involved, please contact me at [email protected] or 924-0723. Our help is greatly needed, especially since there are no teacher associates or parent volunteers in the classroom, only the teacher.

Teachers' Helpers

Anytime from 10:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Teachers need help in a variety of ways in the classroom and also during lunch period (11:30 - 12:30). Commitment on a regular basis would be best, but not required.

Art Teacher Helpers

Anytime from 10:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. but especially for the Kindergarten Class from 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The librarian needs help with the Book Fair during the week of October 25th. Clear Channel will give each student $5.00 to purchase a book so more help will be needed this year. Experience in working at a Book Fair is a plus but not necessary.

If you have a special interest, training or talent working with children, please let us know.

Thank you for considering to help our community's children at Polk Elementary!

These photos are from the most recent food drive held in the elementary school for September’s Hunger Action Month. The children in the photos represent each of the four first grade classrooms. Each month the elementary school is invited to participate in a focused activity representing some sort of service to the community. For September, the children collected canned foods and then used the cans throughout the month in various activities in their classrooms.

For the month of October the elementary school community service focus will be on the Lions Clubs International Recycle for Sight Program. Candy Ryals ([email protected]) is a member of this organization and our fourth grade classrooms have agreed to sponsor this drive. The drive itself involves asking students to donate used eyeglasses, sunglasses, and readers. These used eyeglasses can help someone living in a developing county see better. Last year the fourth grade collected 71 pairs of eyeglasses. This year they hope to top that number. The collection boxes will be in the main office as well as in the fourth grade rooms in C Building. Ms. Ryals will give us a count at the end of the month.

Through the efforts of the school nurse, Mickie Lanier, and Candy Ryals, The Downtown Baton Rouge Lions Club will provide vision screenings to our kindergarten classes on November 11th.

For more information or to offer ideas for the month, please contact Eleanor Canon ([email protected]) or 578-6321
