This term we have focused on science—Planet Earth and its systems. We have created

models, attended an education session at the museum tearooms, visited Te Wairoa (the

Buried Village), Whakarewarewa Village, and we have conducted experiments in class to

better understand the formation and behavior of volcanoes.

Making a model of Earth’s structure using modelling clay and sand.

On our Tarawera Legacy trip we learned that Lake Rotorua is a caldera. We made models from flour and a balloon to show how a caldera can form after a volcanic

eruption.

For the First 5 Weeks of the Term we were very lucky to have Whaea Felicity in our classroom , working with us for her final teaching practicum. She taught us lots of exciting and interesting things. Our favourite part was ‘Mindfulness’, which we did after lunch each day to help calm us and resettle back to our learning.

Our Inquiry unit this term has been learning about Planet Earth and Beyond.

We have been investigating the Solar System and learning about the different Planets. As a wrap up to this part of our unit we had to make and construct our own

solar systems.

We had a great day out recently on the Tarawera Legacy. We went to the Tea Rooms in the Government Gardens, Whakawerawera Village and the Buried Village. It was a fabulous day and we learnt a lot about the Geothermal activity of our area and the affects of the Tarawera Eruption

Te Roro o Te Rangi Whā Wow, what a fantastic term we have been having in Te Roro 4.

We have been focusing on geoscience this term which has lead to some great curiosity time and time exploring geo science that interests us.

We were lucky enough to attend the science roadshow and learn some awesome new facts about the world around us.

At the beginning of the term we headed out to explore the science around Rotorua and took the opportunity to learn about the volcano that we live in through the Tarawera legacy trip.

It was a great day and we all came back with lots of new knowledge.

Te Roro o te Rangi 5 Collaborative Maths! A focus in Te Roro 5 is working collaboratively where we learn from each other, share ideas and strategies to solve problems. In this session below we had student teachers working in pairs to teach a group of learners how to convert between decimal numbers and decimal fractions. They also covered addition and subtraction of decimal numbers and putting decimals and fractions in correct order from smallest to largest. It was amazing listening to the conversations from all groups around the learning happening.

A great effort by all.

Te Roro 5 took the opportunity to join an experience called Moostery Skype where our class was matched up with another class from a rural school. We shared postcards, a visual scavenger hunt about our school and then we had a skype session. Leading up to the skype session we were learning about the regions and cities within New Zealand and how to use google maps and a focus on questioning skills. The goal of the Skype session was for both classes taking turns to ask questions to try and find out what Island, Region and City each class lived in and also the name of the school. The first class to get all 4 areas correct was the winner. We missed out by one question as it was their turn and they guessed where we were. We also knew where they were at the same time so a very close game. The rural school was Mangawhai Beach school. What a lot of fun this was for our class.
