Kia ora koutou! I am really pleased those blustery winds have stopped! We have noticed some of the school gates are being left open at the start and end of day. We have heard that some of our younger children or preschoolers with their families run towards the gates. When the gate is closed, it acts as a barrier to slow these children down. Can you please help us by closing them behind you? Thank you. Many thanks to the parents who attended the really positive meeting about the proposal to move the school bus stop. As we were joined by Jane Davis from the Council, she has taken our comments and suggestions back, so watch this space for further developments! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have some students involved in two leadership initiatives at the moment. These are: NYLD Conference - National Young Leaders Days are annual leadership events held around New Zealand to inspire primary, intermediate and secondary school students. Today 8 selected Yr 8 students are attending the conference in Porirua with Lesley Kennedy Last term Alison asked for expressions of interest from students in years 5 - 8, who would like to participate in a South Wairarapa Student Inquiry. This inquiry is to find out how to make schools and learning more responsive to students. Three children from the group of about 20 who were interested have been selected to be part of a steering group who will guide this inquiry. Their first meeting is this Thursday morning at Gladstone School. If your child also expressed interest in this student-led inquiry, they will be involved later on as those who are talked to for information and ideas. We are getting close to the annual cross country. I have seen lots of runners who are determined to run the course. Cross Country Our annual whole school Cross Country event is being held next week, on Wednesday 30 May. The postponement date is Friday 1st June. We still need one more marshal! Please contact the school office if you are able to assist. The inter-school event, of all Wairarapa Schools is being held at a new venue this year, Tauherenikau racecourse on Wednesday 13 June. This event is for year 4-8 students. Selection for competing in this event will be from placings in our school event. (Order of events and organization on the last page of this newsletter). We have received advice from the NZEI (the teachers’ union) that PUMs are scheduled for local schools on

Thursday 28th June, starting at 2:30pm. While the school will remain open at this time, there will be

reduced staffing, so you would be most welcome to collect your child from school earlier in the

afternoon. We will send out further information closer to the time.

On Thursday last week some classes got the chance to listen to oceanographer Oliver Vetter speak. He visited our school as a result of an invitation sent to him by some enthusiastic and concerned Year 8 students. His main message was to share what is happening to our waterways and oceans. He got the students thinking about what they can do to help. One of the events Oliver helps organise is Community Tree Planting Days. Details of the next event are at the end of this newsletter. Community News:

Kathmandu Okorewa Reserve Planting

Community Tree Planting Day

We invite you to join us on Sunday 27 May for a tree planting at Okorewa Lagoon.

The South Wairarapa Biodiversity Group do amazing work in this area, and are lovingly overlooking its restoration, so we want to help them give some love to this special area. This project is also supported by Greater Wellington Regional Council and Department of Conservation and it’s always an honour to be working with these teams.

We’ll meet from 10.30am; look out for the Kathmandu Flags about 200 metres past the Lake Ferry Hotel. We’ll be starting from 10.30am and finishing up around 2.00pm. You can stay for as little or as long as you like, but around noon we’ll all come together for a some tasty food and some Phoenix Organics Drinks.

To participate, please take a few seconds to sign up via registration at Kathmandu’s Summit Club.

If you’re coming from the Wellington there’s a FREE bus courtesy of Kathmandu! It leaves at 9am sharp from Willis Street – Grand Arcade Bus Stop. Just remember to register below.

If you’re driving yourself it takes about an hour and a half – after the Rimutaka’s, head toward Martinborough and take Kahutara Road toward Lake Ferry.

This is a beautiful but remote and rugged area, please dress and prepare accordingly for changing weather. The planting is within walking distance from the car park past the Lake Ferry Hotel – just look for the Kathmandu flags and you’ll find us!

We provide:

Lions Club of Carterton - A huge thank you to the Lions Club of Carterton, who have donated $1000 to the PTA which was earned from their fantastic Food Caravan and their members' hard work at our Gala. The Lions Club of Carterton prides itself on its Food Caravan and the profit they make from the sale of their famous Hot Dogs and Chips is all returned to the community. They also provide around 80 loads of Firewood to the Elderly in Autumn. So the next time you see the caravan around, please thank them for their generous donation to Carterton School. If you are interested in learning more about Lions and becoming a member, they meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Contact Morris Edwards on 06 379 8065

Pie Fundraising – thanks to all of you who bought pies, helped out selling or helped us sort pies for pickup. We sold a whopping 818 pies and made $1600!

2nd hand uniform shop – The shop is open every Monday morning this term 8.40am – 9am.

o If you have unused uniforms you can donate it would be much appreciated. Please drop off at the office, or the shop on a Monday morning.

o We can also sell on your behalf – if you have good condition polos and fleeces, these sell the best. Make sure you leave your name, cell phone and desired price if dropping them at the office

Have a great week! And don’t forget to join our Carterton School PTA facebook page.
