4th December
Dear Parents and Carers, Although it was a short week last week, it definitely ended on a high note with the Brierley
Primary Christmas Fair! It was wonderful seeing all of the parents, friends and pupils of Brierley enjoying the wide variety of stalls that were on offer – and we even had a visit from Father
Christmas! With such a fantastic turn out, the fair raised a whopping £829.38 which will go
towards the whole school trip to the Christmas Pantomime and Knowsley Safari Park in May
2018. Many thanks go to Friends of Brierley, staff and helpers who helped set up and run the
stalls during the fair.
As we approach the end of term, it gets closer to the whole school Christmas play “Christmas
All Over The World” which will be performed on the 14th (at 1:30pm) and 15th December (at
10:00 am and 1:30pm). Please make sure you have booked your tickets for your selected
performance. The children are very excited and have been practising very hard to blow you
away!
Just a reminder, if your child(ren) would like a Christmas Lunch on the 12th December, it must
be booked by Thursday 7th December.
Warmest regards,
Mrs McIntosh

PHASE 2 NEWS
EYFS NEWS
In EYFS this week we have been learning about the
effects that exercise has on our bodies. We have
been running, jumping and ‘working out’ to get
ourselves fit and healthy.
We have been doing lots of practise for our Nativity play which is this Wednesday.
We cannot wait to present our play to parents.
We have also been looking closely at different vegetables and trying out our new
potting shed. We have been tasting them, planting them and rescuing them from
the Evil Pea!!
This week, we have been focusing on shape poems. In guided reading sessions, we
discussed the features of the poems, vocabulary choice of the author and the
meaning of unknown words. This linked into the beginning of our topic ‘The Polar
Regions’. As a starting point in English, we researched the animal of our choice (polar
bear, penguin) by searching online websites, skimming through text books and looking
through PowerPoint presentations.
PHASE 4 NEWS
PHASE 3 NEWS
This week we have been busy doing lots of assessments although we were lucky
enough to have a poetry workshop from ‘As Creatives’. Jo Stokes spent an hour with
each year group teaching us how to create a piece of poetry using our senses. We
imagined a setting in a country side and thought about all the sights, smells, sounds
and feelings we might have. We then created a sound scape to bring our setting to
life. We used these ideas to create a narrative piece of poetry.
This week in Phase 4 we have been extremely busy as we have had an assessment
week. Well done everyone, you’ve all worked your socks off and we were very
impressed. You certainly tried your hardest!
We have also had a selection of really exciting lessons, including using chocolate to
help investigate the different rock types as well as a debate as to whether the first
moon landing was a conspiracy or not. To finish off the week, everyone had lots of fun
at the Christmas Fair.
BRIERLEY SPORTS
The pupils have improved on their points from last year, which is fantastic, and can be pleased
with all their efforts. Thank you to the all staff, parents and volunteers who were involved in
coaching or helping to walk the pupils to the event. Thank you also to the huge army of parents
that came to MMU to support the children- your support meant so much to them!
The annual Crewe & Nantwich Sports Hall Athletics Competition took place on Tuesday 28th
November at Manchester Metropolitan University Crewe Campus. The children had spent 3
after-school sessions working hard to practise their events: relays, long jump, triple jump, chest
push and javelin. There were 5 schools taking part in our heat- Mablins Lane, Hungerford Road,
Wistaston Academy, Beechwood and ourselves. We had 44 pupils taking part in the
competition, it was fantastic to see the children giving their all and representing the school.
On the track, we won 2 events: the Year 3/4 Boys 2x2 Lap Relay was
won by Bartosz Babula and Adam Wright. The Y3/4 Boys Under / Over Relay was won by Harvey Lindsay, Nathaniel Isiama, Denzel
Lisboa and Travis Wilcox. We also had a few 2nd places: Y3/4 Girls
Obstacle Relay (Skye Haynes, Rebecca Lindley, Izzie Bartram and
Rebecca Micklewright), Y5/6 Boys 6 Lap Paarlauf (Matthew Thompson
& Ashton Degnen), Y3/4 Boys Hurdles Race (Harvey, Bobby Mellor,
Noah Jones and Logan Cunningham) and the Y3/4 Boys 4x1 Lap Relay (Gracjan
Marcinkowski, Adam, Bobby and Nathaniel).
In the field, it was harder to gauge individual positions as it was on the other--
__------------------ side of the hall. We scored maximum points in the Y3/4 Boys Chest
Push_________ (Denzel, Ben Jones & Travis), Boys Speed Bounce (Gracjan, Bartosz & Noah)
and__________ Boys 3 Bounds Jump (Harvey, Bobby & Adam). In the Year 5/6 field
______________ events, we scored maximum points in the Girls Chest Push (Trinity Palin, Talia-----
----------------------Wilcox & Tahlia Clark,-Boys Speed Bounce (Joe Lee, Leo Jones & Kalem
______________ Cooper) and Boys Triple Jump (Bradley Wilkins, Matthew & Marcel
______________ Krawczyk). The Javelin proved to be quite fruitful for us, as we picked up
numerous 2nd places (Dorothy Isiama, Travis, Talia, Kye Dixon and Bradley) and two winners in
Trinity and Ashton. Ashton's throw was nearly 23m which is an incredible distance and was by
far the longest throw of the event!
Overall Results:
Year 3/4: Mablins Lane (212pts), Wistaston Academy (188pts), BRIERLEY (172pts), Beechwood
(94pts) and Hungerford.
Year 5/6: Mablins Lane (182pts), Wistaston Academy (178pts), Hungerford (162pts), BRIERLEY
(126pts) and Beechwood (78pts).

Just Dance Off
Year 5 took part on the13th November, where the standard was extremely high and
everyone enjoyed taking part. In Round 1 we lost Jodrell, who finished with a single
point, and the judges placed Anderton in the lead. Round 2 was a closer contest and,
despite the best efforts of Jake Plant who was phenomenal, it was Delamere that were
eliminated and scored the 2pts, with Tatton voted in the lead. The final, 'Pump It' by the
Black Eyed Peas, showed good synchronicity from both teams and were nearly spot on
with each move. The judges were unanimous in their decision to award ANDERTON the
4pts and Tatton the 3pts. Well done to the winning Anderton team: Matthew
Thompson, Alexis Edwards, Talia Wilcox, Carly Taylor, Ellie Mae Coulson and Leo Jones.
On Tuesday 21st November, Year 3 opened with 'Starships' by Nicki Minaj. In Round 1,
Tatton were looking strong and, despite a good team effort it was Delamere who were
eliminated and scored 1 point. In Round 2: 'That Power' , it was a close call as all 3
houses danced well! It was Anderton who were eliminated and scored 2 points. The
final, between Tatton and Jodrell, to 'Where have you been?' by Rihanna saw Jodrell
producing the goods and were deserved winners of the 4pts, with Tatton scoring 3pts.
Well done to the winning JODRELL team: Harvey Lindsay, Adam Wright, Denzel Lisboa
and Gracjan Marcinkowski.
Last Monday, Year 6 had a full house representing our teams and started with 'Swish
Swish' by Katy Perry. Tatton were the strongest house in Round 1 and it was Anderton
who were eliminated in a close call with Delamere. In Round 2: 'Cake by the Ocean‘, it
was Jodrell who were our strongest house. Tatton edged out Delamere who were
eliminated and scored 2pts for their efforts. The final was between Tatton and Jodrell to
'Moves like Jagger.' At the halfway stage in the song, Jodrell were just ahead however
a much stronger 2nd half by Tatton saw them take the 4pts, with Jodrell finishing
second and taking 3pts. Well done to the winning Tatton team: Nicola Slupska, Megan
Degnen, Joe Lee, Marcel Krawczyk and Adrian Medeleanu.
Beanbag Golf
On Tuesday 14th November, the Year 6 competition was well represented and we
enjoyed a great competition. We had three people successfully hole out in two shots:
Bradley Wilkins, Ben Antrobus and Ashton Hodgkinson. The standard was very good,
with the vast majority of pupils scoring 3 shots and only one or two 4s. The consistency in
their throwing was evident in the results as there were 3 shots between 1st place and
4th place! On 61 shots we had Delamere (1pt), Tatton in 3rd on 60 shots (2pts), and one
shot ahead of Tatton were Jodrell on 59 shots (3pts). Our winners were ANDERTON who
shot 58 and take home the 4pts. Well done to Holly Walton, Kye Dixon, Aaliyah Wilson,
Grace Kosefobamu and Ben Antrobus.
Noughts & Crosses
We had the Year 5 competition on the 23rd November. In the first round, Anderton
beat Tatton 4-1 and Delamere came from behind to win 3-1 against Jodrell. In Round
2, Tatton found Delamere in amazing form and couldn’t prevent a 4-0 win for
Delamere. Anderton went one better in their impressive 5-1 win against Jodrell. In the
final round Tatton and Jodrell played their part in an epic battle which ended with
both teams winning 2 games each and Anderton sealed 3 wins out of 3 with a 2-0 win
against Delamere. Tatton and Jodrell finished level on points in joint-third place so both
teams score 2pts. Delamere finished in 2nd place and our winners were ANDERTON
who scored 4pts. Well done to the winning team: Matthew Thompson, Alexis Edwards,
Carly Taylor and Talia Wilcox.
Class House Points:
Week commencing Monday 13th Nov: DELAMERE (4pts), Tatton 3pts, Jodrell 2pts and
Anderton 1pt.
Week commencing Monday 20th Nov: JODRELL (4pts), Anderton 3pts, Delamere 2pts,
Tatton 1pt.
Current totals - correct as of 27/11/2017:
1st Place: ANDERTON (78pts)
2nd Place: Tatton (70pts)
3rd Place: Delamere (67pts)
4th Place: Jodrell (65pts)
Well done to Anderton who are still leading the way as we enter the final few weeks of
the Autumn term. There are still plenty of points to play for and with reigning
champions Tatton and the other houses trying their hardest to win points, we could be
in for a close finish!!
Keep earning those house points!!

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CLUB
UNIFORM
It’s good to see so many of our children looking smart in neat school uniform. This is an important way that we represent our school and so we think that it important to keep up high standards. Please check that your children are wearing the correct school sweatshirts or cardigans. (No pre-2013 logo). White polo shirts should be worn under the sweatshirts, not dress shirts with collars or long sleeves. It is nice and warm in school, so the children do not need lots of extra layers when inside. Flat black shoes (not boots) should be worn. No brightly coloured/patterned socks or tights please. Socks should be plain grey, black or white. Thank you for helping us to maintain our standards of uniform. Please also make sure that your child has a PE kit in school. It’s best to leave the kit in school every day during the week and take it home for washing at the weekend.
Please check that labels haven’t washed off: Please check that all of your child’s clothes are clearly labelled so that we can return them if they get lost. If you’ve written your child’s name in biro it might be worth checking that it is still legible as biro tends to wash off over time. A polite reminder that children should not be wearing earrings to school. Please make sure that if your child’s hair is shoulder length that it is ‘tied up’ for PE.
Thank you for all the ways that you continue to support the school. We look forward to
another happy and successful term!
Breakfast and After School Club Staff are always happy to welcome the children to Breakfast
and After School Club but please be mindful, that these sessions need to be booked and paid for in advance in order for us to ensure the correct staffing ratios.
POLITE REMINDERS
There are so many procedures and protocols linked to school life we thought it would be helpful to put in a few gentle reminders of how you can help things run smoothly for both us and yourselves: • Dinner money to be paid in advance
• Trip and residential monies to be paid on time • Nursery fees and Breakfast/After school club fees to be paid in advance – these are not
funded through school funds • Children off school ill – phone school office in the morning; for sickness/ diarrhoea they
must stay away until 48 hours clear of last episode • Different collection arrangements for end of school day – phone and let us know • Arrive at school on time so that the teachers can take your child into school. • No dogs on the school playground or near school gates – including being carried. • No bicycles or scooters to be ridden on school playground • Read the newsletter– and encourage others to do the same please! We know there is a
lot to remember, but if you are not sure about anything then please ask.
Friends of Brierley 2017-18
CAN YOU HELP US WITH FUNDRAISING THIS YEAR? REASONS WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP!
As parents, you are AUTOMATICALLY a member of the (Parent Teacher Association) – Friends of Brierley… your voice counts. Our FOB depends on a continual cycle of
parental involvement. As children reach their final year and leave, so do their parents. The staff support us when possible, but without all your support, we have no
FOB – WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
FOB is a group of parents who work together for the benefit of Brierley Primary School. Some of them are full-time parents, some work part-time or work full-time. NONE are specialists in fundraising. Taking an active role with the FOB is critical to
your children’s success, so we’ve compiled a list of reasons why helping the FOB will greatly improve your child’s school experience. YOU ARE VITAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THE SCHOOL
• Without the funds raised by the FOB, your child would not have had the benefits of: whole school trips, special end of term treats, Christmas Party, leaver’s party etc.
IT’S TOTALLY FLEXIBLE!
• There are a variety of small ways in which you can help and be involved – from designing a poster, looking for donations, distributing letters in the school, cleaning
up after an event, helping out on a stall…so many ways.
• Giving up just 30 minutes of your time to help the FOB is invaluable. If everyone could spare 30 minutes a term to help, just think what we could achieve.
YOU’LL FEEL MORE CONNECTED
• There’s no better way to know what events are being planned, have your say or make new fundraising suggestions, than by offering your help and support.
A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO NETWORK
• You will be part of a network of people who all share a common goal of improving the school for all our children.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
• By volunteering to help the FOB, you’ll be able to use whatever skills you have for a worthy cause.
BE A ROLE MODEL
• By getting involved with our FOB, you’ll show your children that not only are they important to you, but their education is as well.
• Your children will see you playing an active part in making their education more varied.
• Getting involved illustrates good teamwork and community spirit. WHAT THE FOB DOES AFFECTS EVERY PARENT (AND PUPIL)
• Your voice matters – Your ideas and involvement can help improve the quality of education for all the children at our school.
• See the smiles on their faces and know that you have played a part in making school a little more comfortable and fun!
IT’S FUN! • Help plan fun events and suggest NEW fun ways to raise funds
• Get your whole family involved!
FINALLY…
Our children are only at school for a relatively short time. FOB events such as Christmas and Easter Bingo, Christmas and Summer Fairs will be remembered fondly
by our children for a lifetime. The trips and resources the FOB helps fund, make learning even more engaging. Help us continue to create lasting memories for our
children.
