TINTAGEL PARISH COUNCIL CLERK The Parish Clerk, Adrian Prescott, has unexpectedly given his notice and will terminate his employment with the Parish Council on the 30th January 2015. This has left the Parish Council in a very unfortunate position. In the meantime, Sue Moth will be keeping all correspondence up to date and any contact can still be made via the normal parish email [email protected]. Any correspondence for the Parish Council can be sent to Tintagel Visitor Centre, Bossiney Road, Tintagel PL34 0AJ. The Parish Council will be meeting in the near future to consider the vacant position. If you are interested in the position of Parish Clerk, please contact the Chairman, Mrs. Mary Dyer on 01840 770472.

    TINTAGEL PARISH COUNCIL FEBRUARY MEETING

Please note that the meeting of Tintagel Parish Council due to be held on the 4th February 2015 has

been postponed and will now be held on Wednesday 11th February 2015 at 7.00 p.m. at Tintagel Social

Hall. The Agenda for this meeting will be published on Thursday 5th February.

I hope that you all had a good Christmas, it seems such a long time ago now. Several people have been asking me about the situation with the Engine House. Until recently we had not heard anything from the Duchy and as you know as a Parish we could not afford to purchase it but we did request that the rights of way around the engine house be retained. We have now had a letter which would indicate that the rights of way are to be retained, the letter also indicates that they are not now selling the freehold and it will be lease hold. I am sure when it does come up for sale we will hopefully be made aware of the date together with any further details of the proposed sale. Roger Wickett, Jo Bull and David Hodge are in the process of putting the Tintagel guide together for the Visitor Centre and we would like to thank all the advertisers for their support and anyone who has contributed in any way to its production. All being well the guide will be available in late February/early March. Mary Dyer Chairman of the Parish Council

TINTAGEL PARISH NEWSLETTER There appears to be some confusion locally about the future of the Parish Newsletter. Before she had completed her employment, Sue Moth had offered to continue publishing the newsletter for the near future and this remains unchanged. The next newsletter (April edition) will be published at the end of March and all copy for inclusion in this edition should be emailed to [email protected] by the 17th March 2015.

Update from local MP Dan Rogerson: I have been calling on the NHS to bring a much needed dental surgery back to Camelford. When the former dentists closed back in 2012, despite our efforts unfortunately a solution couldnt be agreed, and people have had to travel to Bude or Wadebridge to see a dentist which causes problems for a lot of residents. Since then many people in the area have been fighting to bring a surgery back to the town. In December the NHS launched a survey asking residents in Camelford and the surrounding communities where they go to see a dentist. NHS England say that the responses from the survey will be used to plan dental services in the area, and to make sure that the NHS is meeting the needs of local people. When the results are published, I hope that the information along with a petition I have been running - will allow us to convince the NHS that we need to bring back a dentist to Camelford. As the price of crude oil has been dropping government ministers have been urging companies to pass on the savings to customers - thankfully we have seen prices at the petrol pumps falling. I am continuing my campaign to extend the rural fuel duty discount scheme to North Cornwall. The scheme sees the tax paid on petrol and diesel reduced by 5 pence-per-litre in some rural areas like the Isles of Scilly and parts of the Scottish highlands. I want to see this discount applied in North Cornwall too where using a car is a necessity not a luxury, where there are poor or no public transport alternatives, and where we have further to drive than island communities. Bringing the rural fuel duty rebate scheme to our area would help to keep fuel prices lower in the long term. You can support the campaign by signing my petition online at http://www.danrogerson.org/fairer_fuel As the price of oil has fallen dramatically in recent weeks, the cost of filling heating oil tanks in back gardens must fall too. I want to make sure that heating oil companies pass on the falling price of oil and I am also looking at what more the Government can do to help people connect many more properties in North Cornwall to the mains gas supply. Unfortunately I have been having some technical problems with my usual [email protected] e-mail address recently, so if you have e-mailed me over the past few weeks and havent had a response I might not have received it, so please do re-send any queries to [email protected] or [email protected] and I will get back to you as soon as I can. With best wishes, Dan Dan Rogerson Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall Address: 4, Tower Street, Launceston PL15 8BQ Telephone: 01566 777123

    DO YOU REMEMBER PAUL TEMPLE

During the War Years and afterwards until television took hold, radio reigned supreme. There were so many excellent programmes to enjoy Drama, Comedy, Music and the Daily News.

    That Wonderful Signature Tune

Coronation Scot (a musical depiction of a train journey), was written by Vivian Ellis, and performed by the Queen's Hall Light Orchestra conducted by Sidney Torch, It was the signature tune of Paul Temple from 1938 to 1968. In the period aired prior to December 1947, an excerpt from Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was used

The people who took the part of Paul over the years were: Hugh Morton (1938-39), Carl Bernard (1942), Barry Morse (1945), Howard Marion-Crawford (1946), Kim Peacock (1946-51) and finally Peter Coke from 1946 to the last one in 1968. I personally remember the great conviction, that Peter Coke played his part. He was backed up by superb performances by his radio wife Steve, played by Marjorie Westbury, from the second series in 1938 until the last one in 1968. The original part of Steve was played by Bernadette Hodgson in the first series in 1938.

In radio and television today, there are always series of programmes going on at one time and Paul Temple was one of the very first. It launched the long careers of Francis Durbridge, as the author and Martyn C Webster, as the producer of Paul Temple, for over 25 years.

I recently purchased some of the original recordings of the programme but sadly most was lost because they used to wipe the tape recording after using them on the radio. If you want to enjoy listening again or for the first time to these wonderful programmes, you can purchase a box set called Paul Temple. Classic Radio Serials 1954 -1968. There are nine complete serials and if you want to spend some enjoyable hours listening to this really great series, then why not buy a box set from your normal supplier of CDs

Not quite the end of the story. The popularity of the series has increased over the past few years and the BBC decided to a new full cast dramatisation of some of the lost series. They have made three to my knowledge, with Crawford Logan as Paul and Greta Stevenson as Steve. Since the box set was made they have also discovered the one of the very oldest drama programmes in the BBC Archive, with Carl Bernard taking the part of Paul and Bernadette Hodgson as Steve. It seems that they must have returned for one more series in 1943

The BBC has also issued some readings of the scripts of the lost programmes by Anthony Head on CD. A superb Book at Bedtime. ! David Flower

    TINTAGEL METHODIST CHURCH

On a sunny January morning, Mr Derek Daniels from Warbstow was the preacher at Tintagel United Methodist Church. Scripture readings were given from Psalm 42 and St John chapter 4, when Jesus met the Samaritan women at the well. Sheila Flower was organist for the day and Elizabeth Brown and Sheila Kenner the stewards. For his address Mr Daniels spoke on the first two verses of Psalm 42 as the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? Tea and biscuits were served in the Schoolroom after the service.

Sunday was also a very important day in the history of Tintagel United Methodist Church when it was Re-Dedicated following a major uplift. The wonderful result was due to a generous legacy left to the chapel by a much loved and admired member of the congregation Miss Phyllis Johnson (Johnny) who passed away in 2007. The Chapel and Sunday School have both been given new roofs. A very large old Jackdaws nest about four-foot square was removed from within the old roof. A new interior lighting system with exterior illuminated Crosses has been installed. The colour scheme was inspired by the colours within the stained glass windows and parts highlighted in gold. The organ looks impressive in its new colour scheme of graduated colours from light to dark, creating a ripple of colour. The ceiling has been painted white to reflect the lights and the windows highlighted with rope lighting as well as having secondary glazing fitted.

The sound of the new organ was very pleasing and our three main organists, June Burnard, Joyce Brown and Sheila Flower welcome any interested players to contact them. The main chapel has been newly carpeted and the old carpet re-laid in the gallery. New comfy seat cushions all blend with the colour scheme. At the front the area by the pulpit has been levelled and more space created by removing the front pew. The richness of the wood in the pulpit and pews has been retained with the seats sanded and waxed. A group of ladies have for some while been working on a new pulpit fall which focused on the trilogy of the Trinity. Once again the colours all tie in with the colours in the windows and dcor. A quilt, hanging between the organ and the pulpit designed by Charlie Tapper was also created by the ladies group. It comprised of a sea view scene including the four seasons depicted by typical Cornish trees bending in the wind, the elements of water, fire air, earth and wind, the symbol of the Holy Spirit.

A Dove, again the symbol of the Holy Spirit, rising from the fire reflects the need to keep the beacon burning. Charlie had also handcrafted flame symbols made from the removed pew and these have been attached to the end of each pews in the Chapel.

With colour coordinated balloons and flowers decorating the building, an afternoon service saw the Chapel full. Rev. Bryan Ede welcomed everyone and a short opening ceremony was held in the front porch when Mr David Tiddicott from Trewin Design Partnership who had project managed the renovation handed the key to Mr Raymond Sleep, the oldest member of the congregation to declare the Chapel re-opened. Mrs Sue Ede had written words appropriate to the venture which was sung to the tune Come and join the celebrations complete with a mass explosion of party poppers!

Readings from Scripture were by Marion Wills, Pastoral Secretary and Joyce Brown, Church Secretary.

Mr Sleep then recalled his memories of Miss Phyllis Johnson who came from Saltash to live in Tintagel in 1970 and of her love and work within the Chapel. He unveiled a slate plaque placed by the seat where she always sat, some of the words on it are she looked to the future with gentle foresight. Her gift becomes our vision filling this Chapel with light. In her later years Miss Johnson completely lost her sight but fought her blindness with great faith and tenacity. Charlie Tapper explained the ideas and inspiration behind the interior decorations and the meanings he wished to convey through the work. He showed a beautiful dove which again has been carved from the removed pew. This in time will be hung on the front wall above the organ. Stuart Patterson, Head Steward expressed thanks to Trewin Design Partnership and Lee Hooker of Coastline Construction who had carried out the building and decoration work. At one time the building was compared to a giant sugar cube, surrounded inside and out with scaffolding and a large white plastic covering on the outer scaffold which could be seen from miles around. He thanked all the contractors for their sympathetic workmanship and trusted that the fabric of Tintagel United Methodist Church would be secure for the next one hundred years. Raymond then cut the celebration cake which was shared around during the remainder of the day.

Many past members were welcomed to the congregation as were the Reverends Leslie Barnes and Andrew Sowden and their wives. A Cornish cream tea was then served before the evenings celebration concert.

Continuing the day of fellowship, friendship and fun the chapel was once again full to hear local artistes perform. Rev. Ede invited the Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir to commence the concert. Under the directorship of Penny Barclay and accompanied by Alan Dawe they sang three pieces Let there be light, The Rose and American Trilogy. The choir meets to practice each Tuesday evening in the Schoolroom.

  • Page 13

Miss Johnson was an eloquent elocutionist and recited long poems all of which she was able to remember. Eve Langley a friend and companion to Miss Johnson for several years, read one of Johnnys poems, A Patchwork Quilt and then a poem Eve herself had written called Ode to Johnny, the words of which brought back many fond memories of Johnny to many of the people present. It was good to have three young people taking part during the evening. King of Kings and Majesty was a solo sung by Grace Robinson. While Erin Bell, a past Sunday School member played two pieces on the flute Chanson and Terazeta. Followed My House and Sweet and Low sung by Jodie Desousa another past Sunday School member accompanied by Penny Barclay on the piano.

Edwina Broad and Kathy Rowse portrayed a narrative with humour that Sue Ede had written especially for the days event based on how a grandfather and granddaughters perspective of the chapels transformation appeared. A version of the pantomime Dick Whittington was narrated by Edwina Broad, taking part were Kathy Rowse, Pauline Sandercock, Jill Findlay, Loretta Bowker, Harry Sandercock with stage hands Stuart Patterson and David Cook. The Orpheus Choir sang three more pieces Jesus shall reign, Lily of the Valley and Spiritual Jubilee. The Open the Book team, who each week visit Tintagel Primary Schools Wednesday assembly, gave a presentation of the Wise Men. Involved were Rev. Michael Parsons, June Burnard, Mary King, Joyce Brown, Jenny Patterson, Kathy Rowse, Peter Battle, Tony and Marion Wills. Concluding the very enjoyable evening the Worship Group, Charlie and Marianne Tapper, Richard Alexander, Loretta Bowker and James Uglow performed two pieces one of which was written about Tintagel churches by Charlie. Rev. Ede expressed thanks to all who had taken part throughout the days celebrations and invited everyone to stay for a savoury and sweet supper, with plenty for all!
