Children First – Aspire – Challenge – Achieve
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week I would like to extend my thanks for your continued support which is
reflected on our GOOD Ofsted report. As a school we have grown together and worked
well together to ensure that we always continue to put children first enabling them to
enjoy school and make progress both with their learning and as confident young people.
We have built GOOD foundations at this school and I know that as a team we will
continue to uphold the core value of ‘Transforming life chances’ for all of our children.
I have very much appreciated the positive comments shared regarding the Ofsted
report from a range of members of our school community. Reception for 2017 is
oversubscribed and I am sure that is as a result of how positively you speak about the
school in the wider community. We will be holding a whole school celebration event in
the coming weeks to commend the hard work of the children with more information to
follow soon.
I hope that you have been able to share the report with your families and are as proud
to be part of New Horizons as I am.
Have a lovely weekend!
Mrs J Murphy
Headteacher

New Horizons have started working towards gaining the Leading Parent Partnership Award.
The Award develops the communication between school and parents as well as delivering
effective parental engagement. Updates will be provided each term via the newsletter and
school website.

Nursery
In Nursery we have started our new topic ‘Can we
explore it?’ The week started with our Wow event
which was a Wellie boot stomp. We had lots of fun
experimenting with water and finding out how
water moves. We have been talking about how we
use water and why it is so important.
Reception
In Reception we have had lots of fun this
week, we have been writing about our holidays
and helping Mrs Palmer sort out a Fish tank
(our wow event) ’someone’ put lots of
different things inside our tank that did not
belong. Children used fishing nets to get them
out, deciding what should stay in the tank and what needed to go. The
children wrote signs to tell people what belonged in the tank and what
should not go into it. We had lots of discussions about how to care for fish and produced
some excellent writing.
Year 1
Our Topic this term is ‘The Enchanted Woodland’, to pique the children’s interest, we went to
our forest school to see if we could find anything magical! The summery weather went away
at the start of the week, so we had wet play in year 1. The children made fairy doors to
decorate the year 1 corridor.
“So pleased for the
school! Very well
deserved 😁xx” Hayley
“Well done, you've
all worked very hard
to achieve such good
outcomes. Well
done”
Laura “Thrilled for the school! Wasn't
expecting anything less! Well
done.” Vicky
Year 2
This week we started our new Topic
‘Land Ahoy’ and we had a pirate’s day.
All the children had a fantastic day, we
all dressed up and we made pirate ships.
We started a new book called ‘Captain
Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs’, we are looking forward to writing
stories about pirates and creating our own characters.
Year 3
This term began with a Launch day filled
with activities such as making fossils,
digging for artefacts like
palaeontologists and making
rivers. Apple class and Cherry class have
also begun to describe the lochs of Scotland, preparing themselves for the arrival of the
Water Horse.
Year 4 Year 4 children have begun their Road Trip to the USA this week. Using a passport to collect
information on a variety of major US cities, the children 'flew' around America gathering
stickers at each destination. In Maths, they have begun to look at the perimeter of shapes,
reinforcing the understanding that they need to measure the outside or the RIM of the
peRIMeter.
Class News
This week Spruce class had their assembly. The children thoroughly enjoyed having their parents
there to watch them retell their favourite things they had learnt from their topic in term 5. Spruce
class did an amazing job and Mrs Lowerson was very impressed with their performance.
Well done Spruce class!
Next Wednesday Birch class have their assembly (Parents welcome) and we can’t wait to see their
performance!
“Didn't expect

Club Watch
Term 6 clubs have got off to a successful start with Drawing and Sketching club doubling
their numbers since last term. The children started their first week by looking at a finished
product that they will create over this term. Maths games had some new members start and
they thoroughly enjoyed playing games that really made their brains work hard!
'Thunk of the week' Remember there is no right or wrong answer, just your own opinion and don’t forget to
write your answer on a speech bubble and attach it to our 'Thunk of the week' display
board.
The next ‘thunk’ is: What if animals could
talk?
National Book Tokens
The National Book Tokens team are holding a big prize draw for one lucky school to
win £5,000 worth of National Book Tokens. The big prize draw is back for a fourth
year and last year’s winners transformed their Library with hundreds of new books.
This is where we need your help!
We would like to ask all parents to go to the link below and enter New Horizons into
the prize draw. The more votes we receive the bigger chance we have of winning this
fantastic prize. If your entry is picked you’ll also get £100 for yourself!

The Thinker’s Keys
This week’s key is ridiculous! That’s right, we are going to take a look at the ‘Ridiculous Key’. To use the
key appropriately, you simply make a ridiculous statement that would be virtually impossible to implement,
and then attempt to explain some of the positive consequences.
The expressions ‘it’s not possible’ and ‘that’s ridiculous’ often prevent the development of many excellent
ideas. Learn to break through them.
As an example:
“The government should make all public transport free for everyone.”
Some consequences:
1. People will have more money to spend in shops, so shops would get more customers
2. Those people that are unemployed will not have to worry about travelling to their interviews
3. People who can’t accept a job because they can’t afford the daily commute will be able to accept jobs
4. There will be a lot less traffic on the roads as people will be able to travel for free on public transport
so they won’t drive
5. Because there will be less traffic on the roads, there will be less pollution so it will be better for the
environment.
Fidget Spinners
As much as children enjoy playing with and collecting fidget spinners, we are no longer allowing
them in school. From Monday 12th June 2017, if a fidget spinner is seen in school by a member of
staff, that member of staff will take the fidget spinner from the child and hand it over to the
child’s teacher. The teacher will then return the fidget spinner to the child via the child’s
parent/ guardian with a reminder that fidget spinners are not allowed in school. If the child is
attending an After School Club, then the fidget spinner will be passed on to the adult running
the club and they will return the fidget spinner to the parent/ guardian when the child is
collected from school.
For children who persist bringing in the fidget spinners to school in spite of discussions with
school staff, their fidget spinners will be kept until the end of the week with further reminders
that they are not allowed in school.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that other toys and cards,
(Pokémon, Lego and football) are also not allowed in school.
