KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 32 - 2018 Thursday 18 th October 2018 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT There are a number of meetings which staff attend every week and which include amongst others, professional learning, data analysis, planning and communication. Every student is discussed at the team level in terms of their growth, achievement and future learning needs. The data evidencing this is used for future planning and assessment. At whole staff and communication meetings it is on the agenda to share the learning successes of your children. This week it was shared the names of students who have made 18 months or 2 years growth in Maths in 12 months. The number of students who have required sitting higher level tests as a result of their achievement has exceeded expectation. Kim Mitchell feels she will be retesting from now until Christmas but is very pleased to be in this position. Particularly exciting is witnessing the reactions of students whose confidence in learning and perception of themselves as being able to achieve has previously been low. All growth and achievement is to be celebrated and we thank all parents and carers who support their child/ren’s learning growth and achievements. Further data has been received with the results of the confidential parent opinion survey which the Department of Education conducted in Term 3. You will remember that the response rate from the families randomly electronically selected was low (even with the promise of chocolate) and toward the end of term the Department permitted us to open the survey to the whole school. I have included a section of the opinion survey below. The percentage of the positive endorsement represents the proportion of parents who answered ‘ agree’ or ‘strongly agree’ to the full set of questions in the domains of parent/community engagement, school ethos and environment, student cognitive engagement, student development, safety and connection and progression. 84% of parents agreed or strongly agreed to ‘I feel comfortable about approaching the school with any concerns I might have.’ , 81% to “I feel confident that this school provides a good standard of education for my child’, 91% to ‘Teachers at this school expect my child to do his/her best’ , 84% to ‘The school provides opportunities for my child to develop a sense of responsibility.’ 91% to ‘This school treats my child with respect’; 91% to ‘My child feels accepted by other students at school’. 19% of parents disagreed or strongly disagreed that The teachers communicate with me often enough about my child’s progress’, 15% to ‘This school has clean and well maintained facilities and grounds’, 5% to ‘My child feels motivated by his or her teachers to learn.’, 2% to ‘My child enjoys the learning they do at school’; 12% to ‘My child is taught organizational skills to help him/her with managing homework and school work load.’ 12% to ‘I feel confident that this school prepares students for the next phase of their life/schooling’; 12% to ‘My child feels confident about the skills and strategies he/she has learnt at school to address bullying behaviours’; 5% to ‘The school always aims to improve the quality of the education it provides’. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The survey also allows for recording of individual comments. We appreciate people’s honesty, and reflect on all for our future planning. Below is a sample and variance of opinion. “There is no shelter for parents/carers to protect themselves from the harsh elements of the yearly weather when they are waiting outside the child/ren’s classrooms in the mornings and afternoons’ ‘The class teacher needs to communicate with the parents more than they do as my child is not at class level’ I am happy that my children receives fortnightly homework tasks. It will be greatly appreciated if the homework tasks given are based on NAPLAN style literacy and numeracy.’ Overall I am incredibly satisfied with KPS. The senior staff and teaching staff are committed to every child’s learning and my child’s teacher is outstanding’ ‘Both my daughters have been through this school from prep to Yr 6 and I cannot wait until my youngest daughter is out of there to start secondary school in 2019’ ‘Definitely an amazing school. My daughter has learned a lot from the school teachers. Everyone is just so friendly.’ I would again like to thank the parents and carers who gave of their time to complete the survey, to provide us with information to assist in our improving our school. If you would like to view the report in its entirety, you are very welcome. Please don’t hesitate to inquire at the office to view all the survey data and comments. ~ Learning Together WEARING OF SCHOOL HATS Please note that the wearing of school hats is compulsory in Term 4. NEWSLETTER 32 - 2018

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

There are a number of meetings which staff attend every week and which include amongst others, professional learning, data analysis, planning and communication. 19% of parents disagreed or strongly disagreed that ‘The

teachers communicate with me often enough about my child’s progress’, 15% to ‘This school has clean and well maintained facilities and grounds’, 5% to ‘My child feels motivated by his or her teachers to learn.’, 2% to ‘My child enjoys the learning they do at school’; 12% to ‘My child is taught organizational skills to help him/her with managing homework and school work load.’ 12% to ‘I feel confident that this school prepares students for the next phase of their life/schooling’; 12% to ‘My child feels confident about the skills and strategies he/she has learnt at school to address bullying behaviours’; 5% to ‘The school always aims to improve the quality of the education it provides’.
