    Dear Families

    Tomorrow night is the student discowhich the Parents Association have

    organised. P Yr 2 is from 6- 7pm andYrs 3 6 is from 7.30 8.30pm. Thedisco will be run by Footsteps dance

    group.

    PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWSThese will be on Wednesday 26th Junefrom 1.30pm 7.50pm (lastappointment) Students will finish

    school at 1pm that day. Students whoare permanently booked into afterschoolcare will be supervised until 3.25 andafterschool care will be in the library.Online bookings will open on Wednesday

    12th June and information for accessingthe bookings will be sent home onTuesday 11th June.

    SACRED HEART LITURGY There will bea whole school liturgy on Friday 7 th Juneat 11.40a.m. and all families are

    welcome.We will also be collecting good qualityused household items (not food) fordonation to the local St Vincents de Paul

    who will then distribute them to theneedy. The collection will be fromTuesday 4th June to Friday 7th June

    and goods are to be placed in theparent room.Suggestions for donations are attached tothe newsletter.

    PREP 2014 New families to St Marks

    can collect enrolment forms from theschool office.

    New family Applications closetomorrow, 31st May 2013.

    If you are a current family and have notput in a Prep Enrolment form yet please

    do so now.

    Letters of offer for all enrolments will besent out before 28th June 2013. Pleasenote that for current parents only this

    letter, while needing to be returned, isonly a formality as siblings are given firstpriority to places.

    SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY FRIDAY 26THJULYThe staff will be focusing on Learning toThink, Learning to Learn and how thisrelates to the General Capabilities which

    are part of the new AustralianCurriculum. This topic is a continuationfrom the previous curriculum day.

    ROAD SAFETY A reminder to parents to

    discuss road safety with their childrenespecially those that ride bikes, scootersetc. We have had a number of reportsrecently of children nearly being hit by

    cars because the children are not takingnotice of other road users.

    DROP OFF ZONEPlease make sure that you move right upto the end of the zone (crossing end)when dropping off and picking up children

    so that the maximum number of cars canstop in that area. Please do not stop atthe bend.

    WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARNPlease remember to collect your stickersfrom Woolworths and remind relativesand friends that they can contribute aswell. This promotion finishes on 9th June.

    NEWS FROM THE REC Sacrament ofEucharist Online Mass booking sheet hasbeen sent home with all Year 4 students.

    This form is also available on the StMarks website and from tiqbiz.Bookings will be open from Monday,20th May and will close Friday 9thAugust.

    BERNS GARDENING The Year 3/4

    gardening group are trying to get ourschool compost bin up and running again.Only a small bin at this stage, we willhopefully be building a new bigger

    compost bin later this year or next.(Helpers wanted!)In order for the children in each Year

    level to successfully recycle their foodscraps we are looking for help from ourfamilies. We need 20 large ice creamcontainers with lids to go into the classrooms. If any family has finished icecream containers could they please besent to school to Mrs Bouvier. Thank

    you.

    HERB SALE The Environment Group are

    selling fresh herbs for $1 a bunch. Wehave rosemary, thyme, oregano, parsley,common mint and Vietnamese mint. If

    you cant come, send a $1 to school with

    your child. Thank you for your support.

    CHILDRENS LITURGY NEWSEvery Sunday at 9:30am mass children

    from Prep to Year 6 are invited to join inChildrens Liturgy at St Marks Church. Atthe liturgy children come to hear theword of God and participate in a varietyof activities that make them reflect onthe gospel story. This is a wonderfulopportunity for the children to come

    together and share their prayers and

    feelings about Jesus. A special invitationis extended to the Year 5/6 children whomay like to be assistant leaders. They

    have the opportunity to work with the

    younger members of our churchcommunity.Each session begins at the start of massin the hall and lasts for around 25-30

    minutes. If any Year 5/6 children areinterested in being leaders could theyplease see Mr Davies, Deputy Principal.

    We look forward to seeing new childrenat Childrens liturgy during the year.

    SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB: Issue 4 was

    sent home last week. Money we earnthrough orders helps to top up book titlesin our library. Orders need to be handedinto the office. Closing dates for each

    issue will be advertised in the newsletter.NO LATE ORDERS WILL BEACCEPTED. PLEASE CHECK THAT YOU

    ARE SENDING CORRECT MONEY,ORDERS WITH INCORRECT PAYMENTWILL ALSO BE RETURNED. There aredifferent booklets for different age

    groups, Prep: Wombat, 1/2: Lucky, 3/4:Arrow, 5/6: Star.

    term. School fee accounts can be paid by

    UNIFORM SHOP. The uniform shop is

    open Wednesday morning 9am 9.30am. Order forms are available from theschool office and website. They can beleft at the office to be completed on

    14 and 16 have been reduced to $15.

    Participants needed: FREE study for

    overweight young people looking forhelp. Murdoch Childrens ResearchInstitute at The Royal ChildrensHospital is running a randomised clinical

    trial of an online weight managementprogram for overweight adolescents.Participation involves completing height,weight, blood pressure and waistcircumference measurements and anonline questionnaire at baseline, 3, 6 and12 months. Parents are also invited to

    participate. Every 3 months there will bea draw for a $100 gift voucher for thoseparticipants who have kept theirappointments. The results will

    demonstrate the feasibility andeffectiveness of using the personalised,targeted Staying Fit program for

    addressing weight-related behavioursduring adolescence. Recruitment hascommenced and we are looking for 550overweight young people aged 12- 17

    Week Ending 31st May 2013

    FOOD TECHNOLOGY RECIPE

    CHOCOLATE AND BEETROOT MUFFINS

    Cup Sugar

    3 Cups Self-Raising Flour

    3 Eggs

    1 Cup Milk

    Cup Oil

    4 Tablespoons Cocoa

    200/300gms Mashed Beetroot

    METHOD

    Pre Heat your oven to 180C.

    1.

    Place flour, sugar and cocoa into a bowl.2.Mash the beetroot and add to the flour along with

    milk, eggs and oil and mix well. If it looks too dry

    you may add some more milk.

    3.Place your mixture into greased muffin tins and bake.4.Bake for 20-25 minutes until springy to the touch.

    5.Cool in tin for a few minutes then turn onto a rack.
